,hat is the Personal Statement and "h' is it important/

The 'ersonal #tatement is a very important part of your university application$

around an "+ side in length. /any courses do not interview so the 'ersonal

#tatement may be your only chance to impress selectors.

5n most cases it will be written between uly of Year 12 with a final version in

#eptember ;ctober of Year 1 but if you now where you are going early in

Year 12$ it will help you to collect e*periences and engage in enrichment

activities so that you have something significant to write about when the time

    comes.

The 'ersonal #tatement gives you an opportunity to:

tell the universities and colleges why they should choose you

tell universities and colleges about your suitability for the course(s)

    that you hope to study.

demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment$ and above all$ ensure

that you stand out from the crowd

,hat should go into the Personal Statement/

#ome of the best advice on the 'ersonal #tatement comes from U!"# whosuggest that at least t"o thirds of 'our personal statement should relate to

the course 'ou "ish to stud' at universit' and 'our suitabilit' for it.

-or a mind=map and worsheet to help you use the lins:

    http:www.ucas.comdocumentsstatementmindmap.pdf

    http:www.ucas.comdocumentsstatementworsheet.pdf

U!"# also give the following important pointers about what you should

    include in your 'ersonal #tatement:

3.4 ,h' 'ou are appl'ing for the course 'ou have chosen/

    3hy does the sub,ect interest you4

evidence that 'ou understand "hat is reuired to stud' the course

3hat got you interested in the sub,ect4

    8/74

3hat have you learnt about the sub,ect4

"ny activities that demonstrate your interest in the course(s)

324,h' 'ou are suitable for the course:

3hich sills and e*perience do you have that will help you succeed on

    the course.

3hat have you done to develop your nowledge of the sub,ect4

3hat evidence is there that you have read$ studied$ gained e*periences

outside the confines of your " level courses4

    ,hat about the %P6/

5f you are involved in this mention it in your 'ersonal #tatement

#how how it has helped you to develop intellectually with e*amples

#how how it has helped you learn new study and research sills

    $o" can I sho" m' commitment to a universit' subject I

    "ant to Stud'/

The first priority is to be on top of the sub, ects you are studying at " level (or

e&uivalent) because without achieving the re&uired grades you will not get a

place at university. You need to be:

    Up to date with assignments

    !over the specification thoroughly

6e clear about the assessment criteria for each sub,ect

ave a good revision programme in place

The second priority is to enrich the " level sub,ect you wish to study at

university and any other related " levels by engaging in a range of activities to

broaden and deepen your nowledge and to persuade university selectors of

    your commitment.

5f the sub,ect you want to study is not one of your current courses$ 0ngineering

or 9et #cience for e*ample$ the same applies. 0ngage in activities to show that

you have made a substantial effort to find out about the sub,ect and that you

have a genuine commitment to it.

    &ead "idel'

Te*tboos &uicly get out of date and have a narrow focus.

what it is about and a clearer insight into how it has reached its current

    position.

Understand that in all sub, ects there is not ,ust one way of looing at

things. There will be different perspectives$ schools of thought$different

views about how the sub,ect should be studied. 6e clear where you stand

    in relation to these debates.

;*ford University 'ress (;U') has a very useful series of boos called

Very Short Introductions which give you e*cellent bacground to

academic sub, ects and topics within sub, ects.

3iipedia also has some useful articles on different academic sub, ects$

    their scope and historical bacground.

-e clear "h' the subject is important and "orth stud'ing

Thin about what the sub,ect has to offer.

5t may help to bring economic and technological benefits to society.

5t may help us to understand how humans behave.

5t may simply be worth studying in its own right

)nderstand the importance of argument and evidence

#erious academic debate revolves around argument or attempts to persuade

others to your point of view using evidence and e*amples to support your case.

    5t is important to:

"s yourself how convincing is the evidence you are using to support

    your views.

"s others what evidence they have to support theirs and challenge it.

-amiliarise yourself with terms$ such as argument and counter argument

and be aware of the dangers of misrepresenting $or using insufficient orunrepresentative evidence.

Understand the common fallacies in argument that others might use such

as correlation not causation or restricting the options.

6e aware of the criteria we should use to decide whether sources of

    evidence are reliable.

5f you are not already studying !ritical Thining which deals with these

issues$ any !ritical Thining " level te*tboo will help you with all this

This will depend on thee sub,ect you want to study. #ome universitysub, ects lie /edicine or 9et #cience will re&uire e*tensive wor

e*perience and it is also e*pected for sub, ects such as 8ursing$ Teaching

    or #ocial 3or.

-or other sub, ects you should try to gain relevant e*periences in the

world outside school such as theatre visits for 0nglish$ industrial and

    business e*perience for sub,ect such as 0conomics$ 6usiness #tudies and

0ngineering$ voluntary wor for caring careers

    " useful websites is:

Use the media to eep in touch with issues and debates relevant to your

    sub,ect: news$ documentaries$ arts programmes$ reviews.

will not usually form part of a university offer for a

place on a course$ it gives you the opportunity to develop independent

and advanced research sills and to e*tend your nowledge of a sub,ect

    that interests you.

5f you choose a topic that is related to a course you want to study at

university it will strengthen your application$ give you something to tal

about in your 'ersonal #tatement and at interview and help you develop

sills that will be useful at university.
