    Geographical Indication- Aligarh Locks

y Aligarh city is famous as an industrial location in the state of

    Uttar Pradesh.

y Also addressed as Taala Nagri or the City of Locks.

yIt is the largest lock manufacturing location in India.

y The famous lock manufacturing company Link locks is

    based in this city.

y On an approximate scale the total number of lock industries

based at Aligarh is 5000 which constitute both small scale andlarge scale industries.

The History of Aligarh Locksy 125 years ago circa 1870 an entrepreneur from England

established a firm Johnson Locks Co. to import locks fromBritain for sale in India at Aligarh.

y In 1890 Johnson and Co. initiated the manual production of

locks on a small scale by cutting brass and iron sheets andmanufacturing them by the process of moulding.

y Also at the same time German locks began to be imported toAligarh for sale.

y In 1930 Johnson and Co. and some other small scale unitsstarted manufacturing locks from sheet metal by duplicatingGerman and British imported locks.

Contd..y These imported locks after duplication at Aligarh began to be

    called as Aligarh locks.

y Post Independence 1950, Surendra Kumar, an advocate by

profession started manufacturing locks in a very systematic

manner by importing machines and techniques and even some

    foreign engineers.

y In 1975 this unit setup by Surendra Kumar collapsed leading to

engineers, contractors, mechanics and labourers rendered jobless.

y To counter this state of joblessness most of them started their ownsmall scale lock units. With this move Aligarh emerged as the hub

of a large number of lock manufacturing units.

y Also from 1950 to 1975 many other local manufacturers at

Aligarh made significant contributions to the lock industry

for eg. Rose and Jemco lock brands.

    y

    Around197

0 Aligarh lock makers went further by makinglocks for small and big automotives in addition to household

    and factory locking systems.

Aligarh Lock Industries at current and

    the need for GI Protection

y Aligarh at present is leading in the manufacture of simple locks

used in doors, cycle locks, suitcase locks and those of factories,

    bikes and trucks.

y 200,000 people find employment in its lock industries with at

least 5000 small and large scale lock producing units at Aligarh.

y However a sad scenario has descended upon this one and a half

century old industry as it finds itself struggling hard to compete

with international players that have entered the Indian market.

y Exports have gone down drastically and small scale industrialistsare finding it hard to sustain themselves inspite of that the locks

being produced are of highest export quality.

    Contd..

y If a GI status is granted to Aligarh locks this dying industry

can have a new lease of life as it will serve as a boost for

exports and also keeping the inflow of international players

in check from killing this premium and historical setup.

Threats to Aligarh Lock Industryy Locks produced in China are being passed off as Aligarh Locks

    worldwide.

    y Lack of investment.

y Cheaper low quality locks from China flooding the national and

international scene aimed at deriving benefits from the Aligarh

brand name and an open attempt to ruin the Indian Lock industry

    at Aligarh by the Chinese.

y No GI protection to Aligarh locks inspite of concern about the

    industrys future.

y Even the government is not taking steps to boost this industry

even when it can be a major earner of export profits.

Salient Features of Aligarh Locksy 130 years old lock manufacturing expertise.

y Superior strength and anti rust production techniques.incorporated like electrophoresis lacquering.

y Made from Brass, Aluminium, Zinc- Aluminium alloys.

y Unique designs which are not found with any of the lockmakers in the world.

y Modern manufacturers abroad are using the tumbler basedsystem that avoids jamming. Aligarh locks use the

conventional lever system and are sometimes prone tojamming if not maintained. The lever system though a bitdifficult to incorporate is more secure than the tumbler one.

  • 8/3/2019 Aligarh Locks Ipr

    10/12

Contd..y British and Chinese lock makers ignore the levers more

secure platform against duplicacy and providing stability. They focus just upon to make their locks more user friendlyusing tumblers which can be breached.

y Aligarh locks are a bit heavy as they use more layers ofhardened metal than international lock makers. In a bid tomake their locks light foreign locks are lacking in this majorsecurity feature too which provides a shield against drilling.

    y

Lever locks produced elsewhere dont have the sameexpertise and intricacy of craftsmanship which locks made atAligarh have.

    Contd..

y Aligarh locks were tested in some European lock testing labs

against locks from 45 other countries where all of them

performed equally till it came to the test of the drilling

machine. Whereas other locks got holes in their body Aligarh

lock withstood the drills pressure and came out only as

    moderately damaged but still usable.
