IIS student wins in Qatar National Music contest

Nabeel Abdul Salam, a Class 10 student of Ideal Indian School won the

Gold Medal in the first Qatar National Music Competition in the Arabic Vocal -Solo category held at Katara Drama Theatre recently.

Organised by The Moving Young Artists (MYA) in associa-tion with Qatar National Commission for Education, Cul-ture and Science and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, the competition is the Qatar’s larg-est musical contest to find the young musician in the national level.

Nabeel is the only Indian student who competed with other Arab nationals presenting Arab classical and traditional songs in the finals to achieve honour.

He Heung Kyeong Park, Korean Ambassador to Qatar presented the Memento, Medal Certificate and Cash Award of QR1,000 to Nabeel in the felic-itation ceremony held at Katara Drama Theatre.

Dr Hassan Kunhi M P, School President and Syed Shoukath Ali, School Principal, congratulated Nabeel on his remarkable achievement.

A week long fest was organised at Shan-tiniketan Indian School to enrich the overall development of Kindergarten-

ers and to discover the talents in them. The

budding stars were provided with wonder-ful opportunities to explore and hone their innate talents through a series of events. This carefully planned endeavour helped our

children to develop resilience and face the challenges of life ahead whilst fostering the spirit of participation, fair play and healthy competition.

It may look like an ordinary door mat, but its creators insist the conceptual art piece could

encourage alien life to visit Earth -- and help create a new kind of space archaeology.

Dubbed the “Cosmic Welcome Mat” it features swirls of red, sky blue, and violet against a black bor-der, and is meant to convey a warm reception to all sentient life in the universe.

Experimental philosopher Jona-thon Keats, who created the rug with space archaeologist Alice Gor-man of Flinders University in Australia, aims to have similar mats placed all over the world.

Keats hopes eventually there will be a replica rug on “everybody’s doorstep”, adding that he is in early talks with Nasa to have one placed at the International Space Station.

He says he has also been talk-ing to the United Nations about a mat being placed at its headquar-ters in New York. An updated design of the mat is due to go on display at a Los Angeles gallery on Friday.

“I have been fascinated by Fer-mi’s Paradox: if there’s intelligent life throughout the universe, where is everybody?,” Keats, also a con-ceptual artist, told AFP at the recent International Astronautical Con-gress in Adelaide.

“I started thinking about how we might be perceived by beings else-where in the universe. It struck me that we really might not be seen as being especially friendly.”

Fermi’s Paradox is named after Italian-born physicist Enrico Fermi, the 1938 Nobel laureate who cre-ated the first controlled nuclear chain reaction.

His 1950 question “Where is everybody?” has since sparked debate about the contradiction between the probability of extra-terrestrial civilisations and why humans have not encountered

them.

‘The ultimate alien’ Gorman said another benefit to

the project would be that some of the dust the mats accumulate would

be from outer space.“Because there’s about 36,300

tonnes of extraterrestrial material that falls to the surface of the Earth every year, we know there’ll be a cosmic component to the dust,” she

explained.Brushing an enlarged version

of the mat on display to collect sam-ples, she added: “We’ll be drawing that into our analysis as well to cre-ate a new kind of archaeology.”

One small doorstep for man: Cosmic mat welcomes aliens

COVER STORYSUNDAY 29 OCTOBER 2017 05Keats -- whose previous efforts

included a bid to genetically engineer God and porn films for houseplants –- said he wanted people to think more deeply about the challenges of commu-nicating not just with those living among the stars, but also next door.

“Trying to think about how we might communicate with the ultimate alien becomes a strategy for thinking about how we communicate with one another,” Keats explained.

He said red in the rug represents alien life, the black evokes outer space, the sky blue is a reference to earth, while the violet is meant to signify artificial indoor light.

This year marks the 40th anniver-sary of Nasa’s first Voyager mission, where twin unmanned spaceships sent to explore other planets each carried a golden record and a record player.

The tracks hold sounds from Earth -- such as greetings in 55 languages, a Pygmy girls’ initiation song and the Chuck Berry song “Johnny B Goode” -- and images, in case the spacecraft encountered aliens.

Two years ago, British physicist Stephen Hawking launched “Break-through Listen”, the biggest-ever search for intelligent extraterrestrial life using some of Earth’s biggest telescopes.

In August, it picked up 15 radio bursts from an unknown source, prompting debate over whether it could be extra-terrestrial technology.

This year has been a great one for gamers. Game developers continued to push hard-ware limits so that players could

experience incredible new worlds and stories. Old friends made appearances as well. Mario, Link, Crash, Samus and Sonic all returned to the gaming fold and did not disappoint.

Without question, rounding up the top five this year was really tough - so many games were worthy of being included - but we feel we picked the best of the best.

“Cuphead”Publisher: Microsoft GamesPlatform: Xbox One and WindowsPrice: $19.99 - download onlyRating: E10+ (Everyone age 10 and older)

Details: “Cuphead” has players taking on the role of the lead character as he platforms his way through numerous levels, dodging fire and engaging in incredibly tough boss battles. The visual style of the game is what puts it in a league of its own. Inspired by 1930s cartoons, each frame, animation and background was hand-drawn. Seeing the game in motion is pure magic. Be warned: The gameplay is pretty tough. Only seasoned platformers need apply.

“Super Mario Odyssey”Publisher: Nintendo of AmericaPlatform: Nintendo SwitchPrice: $59.99Rating: E10+

Details: In the latest installment of an open-world Mario game, Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, and it’s up to you to save her before their wedding. Joining Mario this time around is Cappy - the hat that can take on

many forms and help Mario get through enemy-filled levels. “Odyssey” looks like a full-featured animated movie. From the various landscapes and environments to the character animations and variety of enemies, it’s visually stunning. Without a doubt, “Super Mario Odyssey” is the best Mario yet.

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”Publisher: Nintendo of AmericaPlatform: Nintendo Switch and Wii-UPrice: $59.99Rating: E10+

Details: Breaking the mold of the typical lin-ear style of gameplay found in Zelda games, this latest version introduces the idea of a fully open world. Players can approach the game any way they like. You might want to explore the land of Hyrule before tackling the main objectives. Or climb every tree and mountain. It’s up to you. As

players progress, they will come across shrines containing puzzles, tasks and challenges. As you complete these, you are given items to help you in the game. From start to finish, “Breath of the Wild” is a masterpiece.

“Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle”Publisher: UbiSoftPlatform: Nintendo SwitchPrice: $59.99Rating: E10+

Details: Ever wondered what would happen if the crazy Rabbids teamed up with classic Mario characters in a video game? Say hello to “Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.” At first glance, you might think it’s a typical Mario game, but it’s not. It’s a turn-based strategy game, which means players will have to plan their moves in advance. This allows players to get their attacks just right. Spread across four worlds with a host of chal-lenging enemies and bosses, players will have to put their thinking caps on to make it to the end.

“Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy”Publisher: ActivisionPlatform: PlayStation 4Price: $39.99Rating: E10+

Details: If you’re a PlayStation fan, you might remember the Crash Bandicoot series, in which players would guide a feisty marsupial through challenging jumping puzzles. Now Crash is back on the PS4. The N. Sane Trilogy has all three games of the Crash series: “Crash Bandicoot,”

“Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back” and “Crash Bandicoot Warped.” All the fun platform action from the originals has been faithfully restored in this version. Fully remastered in HD, Crash has never looked better.

Thick, meaty fish such as Chilean sea bass takes well to a light smoke. To accom-

pany it, this version of a Japanese ponzu sauce is tart with lime and lemon, brightening the smoke flavour.

You’ll need to soak 1 cup of apple or alder wood chips for an hour.

Make Ahead: For best flavour, the ponzu sauce needs to be refrigerated for at least 2 hours before serving, and preferably overnight. It can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.

IngredientsFor the sauce2 tablespoons plain rice

vinegar1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

(from 1 large lemon)1/4 cup fresh lime juice, (from

2 limes)1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce1/2 cup mirin1/2 cup dried bonito flakes

(about 1/4 ounce)One 3-inch piece of kelp

(kombu; about 1 ounce)For the fish1 tablespoon fine sea salt1 teaspoon powdered or gran-

ulated garlic1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne

pepper2 pounds Chilean sea bass fil-

lets, pinbones removed (may substitute swordfish, halibut or haddock)

4 servings

StepsFor the sauce: Whisk together

the rice vinegar, lemon and lime juices, soy sauce, mirin, dried

bonito flakes and kombu in a con-tainer with a tight-fitting lid. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, and preferably overnight.

For the fish: Prepare the gas grill for indirect heat. Turn the heat to high. Drain the chips and put them in a smoker box or foil packet poked with a few fork holes to release the smoke; set it on the cooking grate, between the grate and the ceramic briquettes, or atop the angled metal heat plates, close to the flame. When you see smoke, reduce the heat to medium (375 to 400 degrees). Turn off the burners on one side.

Lightly oil the cooking grates on the indirect-heat side of the grill.

Combine the salt, powdered or granulated garlic and the cay-enne pepper in a small bowl, then use some of it to season the fish (to taste). Place the Chilean sea bass on the indirect-heat side of the grill, close the lid and smoke for about 15 minutes, or until the fish is lightly bronzed and the thickest part of the fillet is barely firm to the touch. It should be moist inside.

Transfer to a cutting board and cut into 4 equal portions, dividing them among individual plates. Strain the sauce, discard-ing the solids; the yield is about 1 1/2 cups.

Spoon 2 tablespoons of the ponzu sauce over each piece of fish. Serve the remaining sauce

in a bowl on the table for use as desired. Serve.

Variation: For a charcoal grill, light the charcoal or briquettes; when the briquettes are ready, dis-tribute them on one side of the grill. For a medium fire, you should be able to hold your hand 6 inches above the coals for 6 or 7 seconds. Drain the chips and scatter them over the coals. Have ready a spray water bottle for taming any flames.

The Washington Post

Watching Fernando Albertino stroll down a crowded sidewalk into downtown Washington during a recent lunch

hour, casually sidestepping pedestrians running errands and crowding around food trucks, you’d have no idea he is legally blind.

Albertino easily blends into the flow of human traffic swirling around him, which is even more remarkable considering that he is doing so largely without the use of his limited vision.

His secret: a wrist band called Sunu that emits a high-frequency sound wave that bounces off objects as far as 14 feet in front of him before registering as a gentle, pulsing vibration on his arm.

The closer the object is -- whether it’s a wall, trash can or person -- the more frequent the pulses become, allowing Albertino to create a mental map of the world around him using echo-location. He compares the device to sonar being used in vehicles to sense nearby objects and avoid crashes.

Albertino, who grew up in Puerto Rico, is part of a team of entrepreneurs from Mexico who built Sunu from scratch and are hoping their invention changes the way visually impaired people get around.

“One of my friends calls the device his ‘sixth sense,’ “ Albertino said, noting that people with vision loss are sometimes afraid of going out-side. “It enhances my awareness of my personal space and keeps me safe when I’m out in my neighborhood.”

For the visually impaired, smartphone apps can help them hail a ride, link to real-time maps and get to the nearest convenience stores. But there is no app for avoiding a tree branch obstructing a sidewalk after a storm or walking through a rush-hour crowd, not to mention find-ing an office in an unfamiliar building or the closest restaurant in a new neighborhood.

It was those kind of challenges, which can fill an ordinary day with physical hazards and

extreme complications, that led Albertino to develop Sunu.

“This is a way of getting people outside and doing things while being discreet,” he added.

“Folks want to be able to go outside, be active, blend in and be part of their community.”

The device’s settings, including range and sensitivity, can be customized using the com-pany’s app.

The National Federation of the Blind esti-mates that more than 7 million people live with visual disability in the United States. Some experts expect that number to increase sharply in the coming decades as baby boomers reach old age and are afflicted by glaucoma and other eye diseases. The visually impaired still rely largely on Seeing Eye dogs and the white cane

-- a tool that is nearly 100 years old and doesn’t protect users above their knees.

The Sunu band isn’t the first device to har-ness the power of echolocation. Inventors have created vibrating clothing that uses echoloca-tion and a vibrating clip that uses ultrasound to help visually impaired people avoid obstacles above their lower body

And at least one man, known as “the real life batman,” trains visually impaired people to cre-ate a rudimentary form of echolocation by clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth

-- a tactic he learned on his own. By clicking, Daniel Kish, who lost both eyes to cancer as a toddler, can even ride a bike on city streets.

The challenge for engineers, Albertino said, is creating technology that isn’t obtrusive,

distracting the user from the sensations and sounds visually impaired people rely upon. A vibrating cane might help a user detect large obstacles ahead of them, for example, but it can also numb the delicate sensations that allow someone’s fingertips to perceive subtle changes on the ground below, Albertino said.

Because of the variety of navigational chal-lenges visually impaired people face, there is no single solution for getting around, experts say. Having access to a portfolio of complementary navigational tools is often ideal, according to Dave Power, the president and chief executive of Perkins School for the Blind, the nation’s first school for the blind.

“If you’re walking down the sidewalk and you’re anticipating a corner, it’s hard to beat a guide dog that knows you and can help you travel long distances,” he said. “But if you drop your wallet on the floor, you might prefer using Sunu over using a cane, which might be a clunkier solution for finding a small object.”

Albertino said he’d like to link innovations like Sunu with Google Maps or Facebook, so a user could point a device in different directions to get up-to-date information about complicated urban environments such as business areas, parks, offices or transportation locations. Such a device would allow visually impaired people to roam freely instead of being tethered to their routine routes, Albertino said.

“What we’re really creating is technology that augments human awareness and this is just the beginning,” he said.

Sayani Gupta supports ‘MeToo’ campaignIANS

Actress Sayani Gupta (pic-tured) has come forward in support of the ongoing

‘MeToo’ campaign through a short video which sheds light on how women need to speak up against harassment.

‘MeToo’ is a global campaign on social media, with women from different quarters and cor-ners of the world sharing their tryst with harassment and abuse.

The video has a song titled “Make it happen” with a motive to empower and encourage people suffering in life, read a

statement. The song has been sung by

Paula while the video has been directed by Sarang Sathe.

“With the recent ‘MeToo’ cam-paign that has bombarded the internet, one thing is surely out in the open, that there is no excep-tion to harassment. Every girl in India gets harassed at some point in their lives and mostly multiple times, irrespective of class, milieu, social strata and age,” Sayani said.

The actress shed light on the fact that it is not just women, who are sexually exploited but men also go through the same ordeal at some point in life.

“Lots of young boys also face similar situations. But unfortu-nately we, as society tend to shove it under the carpet, maintain a hush hush around it and are even advised by our families in many cases, to not make a hue and cry about it and just endure it silently. This needs to stop now,” said the

“Jolly LLB 2” actress.“We will not be silent. We will

not be a quiet spectator of harass-ment whether it happens to us or someone else. Whether it happens in the streets, in buses, trains, on the footpath, our homes, at our workplace, we cannot let it con-tinue to happen.”

Hollywood honours George A RomeroAFP

US filmmaker George A Romero, whose 1968 clas-sic “Night of the Living

Dead” spawned the zombie movie genre, was posthumously honored Wednesday with a star on Holly-wood’s Walk of Fame.

Filmmaker Edgar Wright, actor Malcolm McDowell and special effects guru Greg Nicotero paid tribute to the director, who died in July at the age of 77, at the cere-mony in front of a quartet of actors made up as zombies.

“I’m not sure I would be work-ing in Hollywood right now if it wasn’t for George,” said Wright, 43, whose 2004 zombie comedy

“Shaun of the Dead” went on to be a cultural touchstone of its own.

“A lot of people owe George a huge debt of gratitude for his inspi-ration. I’m just one of many.”

Shot in black-and-white on a budget of just over $100,000, Romero’s debut feature “Night of the Living Dead” daringly featured black actor Duane Jones as its lead.

Some film scholars later sug-gested the movie was a subversive critique of US society during the 1960s, while its gory realism was reminiscent of footage from the Vietnam war airing on American

TV at the time. The film went on to gross over

$30m worldwide, and led to five sequels including “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) and “Day of the Dead” (1985) -- inspiring an entire genre that remains a Hollywood staple to this day and earning the nickname Knight of the Living Dead.

Nicotero, a veteran special effects make-up artist and execu-tive producer and regular director on AMC zombie drama “The Walk-ing Dead,” recalled becoming friends with the filmmaker and quitting pre-med to manage the make-up effects department on

“Day of the Dead”.“If George hadn’t come around

I’d probably be removing real kid-neys from people as opposed to the fake kidneys I remove on a daily basis,” said Nicotero.

“He was a man that loved mov-ies passionately. His inspirations

allowed him to change the rules to suit his style of filmmaking as he matured as a storyteller.”

After the original trilogy, Nicot-ero penned and made a further three films, starting with “Land of the Dead” (2005), a commercial and critical hit which features Wright and “Shaun of the Dead” star Simon Pegg as zombie extras.

Romero’s other notable works include 1981’s “Knightriders,” about a traveling medieval reenactment troupe that jousts on motorcycles, and 1982’s horror anthology

“Creepshow” written by Stephen King.

Much of his work was shot in or around Pittsburgh, where he had attended Carnegie-Mellon Univer-sity after moving away from New York, where he was born in 1940 to a Cuban father and a Lithuanian-American mother.

Romero began making his own short films as a teenager and was arrested at 14 for throwing a flam-ing dummy off the roof of a building while making “Man from the Meteor” in 1954.

The director’s widow, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, accepted the iconic Walk of Fame’s 2,621st star on behalf of her husband, describ-ing him as a “life force (whose) light will never be dimmed.”

Selena Gomez speaks out about kidney transplantIANS

Singer Selena Gomez says her kidneys were “done” when she had the trans-

plant operation, and credits her best friend for saving her life.

In an interview with “The Today Show”, the pop star, who has battled with autoim-mune condition lupus, said it got to the point where it was

“kind of life or death”, reports mirror.co.uk.

In their first joint interview since the surgery, Gomez said:

“My kidneys were just done.”She added: “That was it

and I didn’t want to ask a sin-gle person in my life and that was the day I came home when I found out and she vol-unteered and did it.”

Asked: “You feel like Fran-cia saved your life?”, the singer responded: “Because she did. That’s it.”

Gomez revealed the news of her operation on Septem-ber 14 by sharing a photograph on Instagram of her and Raisa lying side-by-side in their hos-pital beds holding hands.

She wrote: “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney trans-plant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.

“...There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.”

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSUNDAY 29 OCTOBER 2017 13WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature finally rolled outIANS

WhatsApp has finally rolled out its most anticipated feature ‘Delete for Every-one’ that allows its over one billion users

revoke their messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group. You can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending.

“Once seven minutes have passed, there is no way to delete messages for everyone,” Facebook-owned WhatsApp said in its updated FAQ on Friday.“In order for messages to be successfully deleted for everyone, both you and your recipi-ent must be using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone,” the micro-blogging platform said.

WhatsApp was working on this feature for almost a year. You can now delete messages for everyone or just for yourself. “Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete specific mes-sages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the mes-sage you sent contains a mistake,” WhatsApp noted.

Messages you successfully delete for every-one will be replaced with “This message was deleted” in your recipients’ chats. Similarly, if you see “This message was deleted” in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for

everyone. This is how it works: Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete. Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu.

Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Everyone”. “If you or your recipient are not using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone, this feature will not be sup-ported,” WhatsApp said. Recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if deletion was not successful.

According to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp, this feature works for messages in text, videos, GIFs, pictures, voice messages, quoted messages and status replies.

The second part is to delete messages only for yourself. Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone.

“This has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen,” WhatsApp said. For this, open What-sApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap

“Delete for Me”. “The feature is being slowly rolled out and users can reinstall WhatsApp in order to download from the server the latest configura-tion,” WABetaInfo said.

Apple says iPhone X pre-orders are ‘off the charts’Reuters

Apple Inc quashed concerns of muted demand for its iPhone X, saying pre-orders

for the 10th anniversary phone were “off the charts”.

The company’s shares, which have fallen steadily since it announced in early September it would launch two iPhones within two months, rose nearly 3 percent in response.

Pre-orders for the much-anticipated 10th anniversary phone started from 12:01am on Friday.

“We can see from the initial response, customer demand is off the charts,” an Apple spokeswoman said. “We’re working hard to get

this revolutionary new product into the hands of every customer who wants one, as quickly as possible.”

The company’s website showed delivery times pushed out to five to six weeks for the phone, compared to an initial plan of November 3.

IPhone X’s launch follows weeks of concerns among analysts about the production of the new phone, which for the first time includes new facial identification software to replace the fingerprint used on previous phones.

Analysts have cautioned that production of the phone was below target, due to difficulties in producing the TrueDepth camera s y s t e m , w h i c h

houses sophisticated cameras and sensors making it possible to unlock the phone using Face ID.

Wireless carriers in the United States and Canada have reported slow third-quarter customer upgrades.

Major promotions on the iPhone X from US carriers have yet to materialise, and in some cases, the offers have been even less generous than what was avail-able for the iPhone 8, said Walter Piecyk, an analyst at BTIG in a research note on Thursday. The base price for the phone is $999.

He noted that Sprint Corp’s iPhone X promotion of $350 in savings for trading in an eligible device was the most aggressive but still lower than what it offered for

last year’s launch of the iPhone 7.However, electronics retailer

Best Buy Co is charging shoppers an extra $100, if they wish to buy an unactivated iPhone X outright.

If customers order the phone on an installment billing plan, they will pay the same price charged by Apple and the carriers.

“Our prices reflect the fact that no matter a customer’s desired plan or carrier, or whether a cus-tomer is on a business or personal plan, they are able to get a phone the way they want at Best Buy,” Best Buy spokeswoman Carly Charlson said.

“Our customers have told us they want this flexibility and sometimes that has a cost.”
