But he was delighted to announce the 30th anniversary of the first multi-sport Masters Games held in Australia would be in Alice Springs from October 8-15, 2016. “The Games have been a terrific event again with numbers on par with 2012, which is a great achievement,” Mr Conlan said. “It is testament to Alice Springs as a venue and the Games as an event. “It could not have been done without the co-operation and collaboration of the Alice Springs community. “While the NT Government is a major stakeholder in the Games, we are only one component. There are all the sponsors. supporters, the participants and the businesses and people of Alice Springs.” Mr Conlan has had a busy week. He’s been out and about visiting sporting venues when not taking to the fairways of the Alice Springs Golf Course as one of more than 300 golf participants. He is pleased with the response to initiatives brought in for these Games including the giant screen showing Games snippets in the Todd Mall, the mobile visual message boards around town letting people know what is on, and in particular, the move of the Games Centre back to the centre of town in the Alice Plaza. “These initiatives have exceeded expectations,” Mr Conlan said. “Hopefully the promotions and moving the Games Centre back to the town centre has produced an economic boost for businesses. Mr Conlan said the social side of the Games goes hand in hand with the sporting aspect. “People come to the Games to be competitive and play sport but they enjoy the social side. “This is always commensurate with the sports and why people keep coming back. “The town can take pride in the fact it has delivered a great Games again.” 30th anniversary locked and loaded for 2016 Games Photo of the Day Photo by Charlie Lowson, The Centralian Advocate Greg Drew going for the layup in the Masters 30+ basketball Final. As if bowling for nine days during the Games was not enough - 12 dedicated tenpin bowlers are back in action today. They’re bowling off for the men’s and women’s Master’s crowns. Anja Taylor is bowling for her sixth consecutive title while Darren Burton is out to claim his fifth. The seven men and five women bowlers all have 11 games without a break in front of them - a total of between 132 bowls (for 11 successive 300 point games) and 242 bowls. Trying to take the title away from Darren will be Richard Drummond, Peter Richards, John “Bundy” Romanelli, Noel Avery, Bernd and Matthew Strangways. Marie Harrison, Tanea Rudder, Jill Quinn and Andrea Philips will be trying to overcome Anja. But results from the week have installed the reigning champions as favourites with Darren winning four gold medals and Anja also picking up a swag of medals. The winners will be decided on the total pin fall from the 11 games. The players in today’s competition are the top bowlers from the week so the quality of the bowling will be high. The top score in the past nine days of competition was 250, with several scores of 249. Geoff Reichstein, the bowler who took up bowling left handed due to a right shoulder reconstruction, showed he was not a handicap for his team mates. He won a bronze medal in the mixed C-grade teams and a silver in the C-grade trio teams. Bowling for today’s competition starts at the Dustbowl on Gap Road from 10.30am. SPORTS HOROSCOPEOctober 19, 2014 is the day of contradictions and vague

premonitions. It will be difficult for you to stay focused on things long enough to actually get them done. This is exactly why you shouldn’t be starting any new projects

and making any important decisions.

ARIESIn the first half of the day self-centered Rams will most likely be focused on their own problems. Depending on how yesterday turned out to be, you will either make your success everyone’s knowledge or will subject your rivals to merciless criticism if they proved to be stronger and more influential than you.

TAURUS In the morning Taurus’ wishes and intentions will be confusing. It is possible that your exciting plans will be replaced by others without yielding any practical result. In the second half of the day the Bulls will finally figure out what their needs are and start satisfying them one by one.

GEMINIThe morning hours of October 19, 2014 will be luring Gemini with their freedom and independence. However, stars suggest you should resist the temptation of starting making plans for the day ahead at breakfast time already. The evening will remind you of household chores.

CANCERThe dreams that Cancer indulges in this morning do not have any practical value. In the second half of the day you will come to realize the impossibility of your hopes or come to the conclusion that some of your demands are too high.

LEOLeo should start this day with a short walk or a simple enjoyable task. Such start will provide for a wonderful mood and help you easily face any changes around. At the end of the day you may suddenly get concerned about the practical side of the festivities.

VIRGOThe second half of the day will prove the most successful. It won’t be without feeling sorry that Virgo will say good-bye to its impossible dreams and risky adventures. On having decided that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush you will get down to routine work with doubled enthusiasm.

LIBRAIt doesn’t make any sense to excite everyone’s interest in your fight with someone. Perhaps, in realty you don’t really care who will be victorious. Today it will be much more beneficial for Libra to sleep in and get thoroughly focused on the material side of your project.

SCORPIOThis is a wonderful day for strengthening your marriage. It is aided by your mutual readiness to complement and support each other in solving practical tasks. Many Scorpions will be happy to know their partners are wonderful cooks and do great at solving domestic and business problems.

SAGITTARIUSSagittarius’ dreams of complete freedom are not destined to come true today. If you want to feel as free as a bird, get up early and spend a few hours to your favorite activity. In the second half of the day you won’t be able to escape some duties, responsibilities and chores.

CAPRICORNThe evening promises to become much more successful than the first half of the day. This is when the Goats will start showcasing practicality, activeness and unshakeable inner balance. This is a perfect time for intimate dates, massage therapy, idle walks and doing sports.

AQUARIUSLittle will remind people of Aquarius’ recent creativity and boiling energy. Many of you will prefer spending the second half of the day at home, outdoors enjoying the fall or in some serene, safe and comfortable place.

PISCESThis is a good day for home work and household chores. Pisces accompanied by its partner, neighbor or relative may run some errands like doing groceries or buying some building supplies. Passive dreamy Fishes will have a chance to realize one of their fantastic wishes.

An average of 300 people a day were carried on the official Alice Springs Masters Games buses.Transport co-ordinator Trevor Bell said their were 24 volunteers driving six buses, answering phones and taking bookingsThe Transport section of the Games operated from Saturday’s Opening Ceremony through to last night’s Closing Ceremony. The volunteers worked in shifts most days from 4.30am right through to 11pm to get competitors to their events and back to their accommodation.“I won’t mention names, but we even had one team of cricketers

who booked a bus to their game,” Trevor said.“They were duly collected and conveyed to the oval.“Fifteen minutes later we received a phone call to collect them - they not only got the wrong oval but they had the wrong day.”The magnetic Games signs on the sides of the buses were very popular as about 10 managed to get lost. Most Games participants appreciated the service.“We endeavour to have drivers who have a good sense of humour, excellent driving skills and an over abundance of patience,” Trevor said.

Being the town farthest from any coast in Australia doesn’t mean beach volleyball can’t feature in the Alice Springs Masters Games. It’s simply moved indoors. The indoor beach volleyball competition wrapped up on Friday after five days of action for more than 100 players.

Co-ordinator Grant Whan said it was the fourth year indoor beach volleyball had been included in the Games and numbers had increased every year.“We had 27 teams in a good strong competition,” he said.“Most of the players were from Alice Springs but there were two strong visiting teams.

“Joondalup from WA were back but they weren’t as strong as in previous Games.“They’d just finished playing the Australian Championship and left some of the players behind.A new team to join the competition this year was the Wallabies from SA.In the past, the Wallabies have

played hardcourt volleyball but when it wasn’t included in these Games, the team decided to play the beach version of the game.“They weren’t used to the net when they started,” Grant said.“But as the week wore on they got better and better.“They were a powerful opponent.”

The Sports Medicine team has been kept busy this week treating a variety of injuries. The team, under the auspices of Sports Medicine Australia Northern Territory, was based at Traeger Park and provided an invaluable service to competitors.Sports Medicine director Dr Greg Winter said the clinic, which was staffed by local and interstate volunteers, had operated from 8am to 10pm throughout the competition.“The goal of the Sports Medicine team was to assess injuries either at the games venues or in the clinic, provide appropriate care and facilitate, if possible, the participants return to their sporting endeavour,” Dr Winter said.He said in the main, the team had treated soft tissue injuries.“There have been acute muscle injuries and exacerbation of existing issues such as the degeneration of knees and backs,” he said.

“We also saw a number of fractures and a ruptured Achilles tendon.“It’s good that we haven’t had heat related injuries - the weather has been kind.”The Sports Medicine team included executive officer Tracey Bradley, medical co-ordinator Dr Linda Clow, physiotherapy supervisor Nicky Rolls and sports trainer co-ordinators Lisa Johnson and Tammy Spence.“Exposing new doctors, physios and sports trainers to the diverse experiences of the Alice Springs Masters Games ensures

the foundations are being built for the continuation of the medical services at future Games,” Dr Winter said.“A special thanks needs to go to the Alice Springs Hospital, especially the emergency department, radiology department and laundry service for their support during the week.“Also thanks to all of the local suppliers and Sports Medicine Australia sponsor, Victor - and the caterers.”

The Alice Springs Masters Games has been ably supported in 2014 by official Ambassadors. The Ambassadors play an important role in being the public face of the Games. The 32 men and women provided information about the town and the Games to competitors and visitors, provided support at medal presentations and were on hand to support competitors and visitors. The Ambassadors were coordinated by Kylie Bonanni, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Alice Springs and a member of the Steering Committee for the Games.

“Ambassadors ensure that all participants feel welcome and that their Games experience is an enjoyable one,” Ms Bonanni said.“The Ambassadors were present throughout Games week at ceremonies, sporting venues and presentations.“They were also at the meet and greets at the airport welcoming participants who flew in for the Games and the railway station when the Ghan arrived.”Nine Ambassadors made their debut this year. Several of the remaining 23 Ambassadors have been volunteering their time at the Games since the early 1990s.

International competitors hit the targetThe seven archers from New Caledonia left the 15th Alice Springs Masters Games weighed down by a swag of medals. They were only at the archery shoot for a day and collected five gold, three silver and two bronze medals between them. The outcome was hardly surprising as the Olympic-style target event is their main style of

archery and one of the team, Sylvana Plazanet, won the gold medal at the 2013 World Masters Games in Italy.Archery co-ordinator Darryl Wakefield said it was a delight to have the international participants add class to the shoot.“They finished their shoot on Thursday and then flew out on Friday,” he said.

“But while they were here, the local archers learned a lot from them as we only shoot targets every now and then.”The international competitors are all from the same club in the Northern Caledonian city of Pouembout. They registered for the Games as soon as they realised it coincided with their planned holiday

to Australia and structured their progrram around the shoot.President of the French archery club Guy Plazanet praised the Alice Springs club.“The organisation here is very good and friendly,” he said. The archery competition was organised by the Dead Centre Bowhunters Club and held on their range off Ilparpa Road.
