Brag page This month we are ‘bragging’ about the Logan West Library!. This branch is part of the Logan City Council and is located in Browns Plains in Queensland. They have a very spectacular Harry Potter display to celebrate the 20th anniversary! The display was put together by our Display Officer, Rachelle Kapor and some very enthusiastic staff helpers. They have the Dursley’s fireplace spewing letters, the house names on poles, and a Platform 9 and ¾ wall.

1.Congratulations on Chip! Shortlisted for the Early childhood book of the year! Yippee!!! What was the inspiration around creating this cheeky seagull? Ideas rarely come when I’m sitting at a desk. So one Saturday morning I grabbed my sketchbook, pencil and snacks and rode my push-bike down to the beach. I drew and wrote everything I saw. As I worked, a cheeky seagull kept creeping closer and closer to my snacks. This reminded my of the many times seagulls had rudely swooped in to steal my chips, sandwiches and even entire sausages! This inspired me to sketch a rude, cheeky seagull character. Once I had this wonderful character on paper I then wrote a story just for him. 2.You are a country girl with a qualification in Vet Nursing! Have you always had aspirations to write and illustrate children’s books? As a kid I really enjoyed drawing, and funnily enough I did usually draw animals. So yes, I had always thought that one day I’d like to illustrate a picture book. It wasn’t until after I studied english literature at uni and spent many years copywriting as a graphic designer that I considered writing a book too. 3.Do you have any events coming up? Where can we meet you?! Chip and all the sketches, drafts and textures that went into creating the book will be exhibited at The Literature Centre in Fremantle during Term 3. I am also looking forward to meeting lots of little people during Children’s Book Week. It is actually more like Book Month for me this year as I’ll be out and about visiting many WA libraries and schools all throughout August.

4.Growing up in the country did you have a local library you could visit? Yes! The Harvey War Memorial Library. I remember the excitement as a kid, holding hands, walking two by two from primary school or kindy down to the library. We were also fortunate to have a great school library too. For some reason I distinctly remember flicking through the picture books in the wooden boxes one day, pulling out ‘When The Wind Changed’ by Ruth Park. I popped it in the special library bag that Mum sewed from the same fabric as our couch cushions. I actually still have that bag! 5.Please finish this sentence… Libraries are awesome because….. Well I love libraries because you can borrow books, books and more books, meet your favourite authors and illustrators, check out their amazing CBCA Book Week displays, spend a lovely morning with your toddler, join in the activities and story time sessions, borrow puzzles and audio books, meet dingos and witness a snake poo on the floor (yes that actually happened at my local library recently). Thanks, Kylie Howarth www.kyliehowarth.com

On the front lines..

Ben Manolas from the Melbourne Library Service shares with us his CYS journey!

1. How did you end up in Children’s and Youth Services?

I started out my professional life as a primary school teacher in a remote community called Blackstone in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, right near the WA/SA/NT tri state border. Long story short, while living and working there I really came to understand the impact that literacy has on a person’s life and started my Masters of Information Management with a view to becoming a library teacher/school literacy superhero. I continued teaching, at a country school in WA, a private school in Malvern East, before landing a job as Children and Youth Librarian at North Melbourne Library on a one year contract. I absolutely loved the role and felt it fit me so much better than teaching did, so when my contract ended I applied for a permanent position as Family Literacy and Outreach Librarian at Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre in Carlton and here I am! The role has also given me the opportunity to act as the Branch’s Team Leader and to work in and lead the Social Inclusion and Young People Team. I think my training as a teacher has really given me a leg up in my role as I work with a lot of schools and educational institutions, I can approach them understanding what they may need from the library and the demands of their job etc. It has also given me the confidence to engage with the public regarding how non-traditional sources can actually help literacy education e.g. board/video/role playing/card games, books with no words, graphic novels and even instruction manuals for power tools.

2. What programs do you/have you run, and do you have a favourite?

I currently run Songbirds (0-18 months), Stompers (18 months – 3 years) and Story Time (3 years +) every week, a Graphic Novel Reading Circle (for adults) once a month, and Free Comic Book Day every year while also being one of the Australian organisers for International Games Week. In the past I have run library and interlibrary Minecraft events, after school fun club, International Games Day, a plethora of school holiday programs, crafternoons, board game club, I have curated a young adult graphic novel exhibition, a whole bunch of special events, and have facilitated more workshops than I can remember. One program I distinctly remember was reading to an entire school over two weeks for book week one year (300+ students), however the programs that has a special place in my heart is Songbirds. When you walk in and see the baby’s faces light up it is the best feeling in the world, and as they grow and learn to talk and say your name and, I’m going to stop there or I may possibly turn into a pile of mush.

3. What has been a career highlight for you?

My current career highlight would be speaking at two conferences, the ALIA National 2016 and NLS8 this year. Speaking at ALIA National was a lovely surprise, I submitted a proposal regarding a study on the role of board games in community building in urban public libraries since I’d seen how they can bring people together and had no expectation of getting accepted. I wrote and presented the paper and have had nothing but positive feedback and experiences because of it, a particular highlight being a colleague and old friend telling me they used the paper to justify having board games in their own library! Because of the amazing people I met at National I was invited to take part in a panel this year at NLS8 regarding librarian fashion and how our work and personalities inform how we dress with a bunch of really amazing people!!

4. What are you reading?

I’m currently reading a couple of things at the moment, A Remembrance of Things Past Vol. 1 by Marcel Proust (I always like to have one ‘adult’ book on the go to discuss with patrons who like that sort of thing), everything Marvel is putting out in the Star Wars universe, the entire Valiant comic line, and The Giver by Lois Lowry which I have never read before to my shame. On my to read is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, another one I haven’t read but should have by now and after seeing the trailer for the new movie I have to read the book before it comes out!!

5. If you could live in any book world, which one would it be?

I would say the Star Wars or Star Trek universes but since they were Movies and TV shows before books I’ll go my third option which is the opposite of those two, Middle Earth. My Dad was always a huge fan of Tolkien’s work and got me on to The Hobbit at a young age and from there I devoured everything related to that universe. I first read the entire Lord of the Rings when I was nine and have read it about a dozen times since then, it’s just so rich and alive and I always find something new to surprise and dazzle me. The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings really started me on my obsession for fantasy and science fiction and the books and the worlds they describe are like old friends that, no matter how long it is since I’ve visited, it’s like I never left.

Ben’s Bio Ben Manolas is the Family Literacy and Outreach Librarian at Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre in Carlton, a branch of the Melbourne Library Service. He currently holds a Bachelor of Education (primary), a Master of Information Management and is studying a Graduate Diploma of Information Technology. He has worked as a teacher in remote, country and urban schools, has held library and management positions in numerous libraries and has a passion for literacy education, engagement, acquisitions and cataloguing, digitisation, digital resources, and digital archives. Ben sees his Asperger Syndrome as an advantage in his work and outside of the library he has been described as a punk and a ne’er do well.
