– Do not miss the deadlines. There are no makeups! Generally they are open for one week from Wed to Wed on the crucible.

– You may take the quizzes as many times as you want during the week interval

– I will drop your lowest 2 at the END of the semester.

You can get 2 different answers depending on which operation you did first. We want everyone to get the same answer so we must follow the order of operations.

Is your answer 33 or 19?

Remember the phrase“Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS1. Parentheses - ( ) or [ ] 2. Exponents or Powers3. Multiply and Divide (from left to right)4. Add and Subtract (from left to right)

Once again, use PEMDAS to evaluate 7 + 4 3

= 7 + 12 (Multiply.)= 19 (Add.)

Example #120 - 3 • 6 + 102 + (6 + 1) • 4

= 20 - 3 • 6 + 102 + (7) • 4 (parentheses)= 20 - 3 • 6 + 100 + (7) • 4 (exponents)= 20 - 18 + 100 + (7) • 4 (Multiply l/r.)= 20 - 18 + 100 + 28 (Multiply l/r.)= 2 + 100 + 28 (Subtract l/r.)= 102 + 28 (Add l/r.)= 130 (Add.)

Let’s try solving for x

Solve the equation -4x + y = -36 for x.Ask: What is the first thing being done to the x?

Multiply by -4.

• What is the next thing done to x? – Add y

To undo – then we should …..subtract y, divide by -4

-4x + y = -36 -y -y

-4x = -36 – y (can’t combine)-4 -4 -4

x = 9 + y/4

Here’s a tricky one!Solve 3ax - b = d - 4cx for x.• First, we must get all terms with x

together on one side.– Add 4cx to both sides

• Next, use the distributive property to factor x out of the two terms on the left.

• Add b to both sides• To undo this, divide both sides by
