Transforming exponential and logarithmic functionsDescribing the effects of change to parent graphs

Write exponential and logarithm models for dataUse those models to predict and analyze

Modeling

I.  Transformations

Page 3: Alg2 4.7 and 4.8 Notes.notebook - bisd303.org · Alg2 4.7 and 4.8 Notes.notebook November 19, 2012 II. Writing Transformations Write each transformed function. f(x) = 4x is reflected

Alg2 4.7 and 4.8 Notes.notebook November 19, 2012

II.  Writing Transformations

Write each transformed function.

f(x) = 4x is reflected across both axes and moved 2 units down.

g(x)= –(4–x) – 2

f(x) = log x is translated 3 units left and stretched vertically by a factor of 2.

g(x) = 2 log(x + 3)

I.  Exponential DataDetermine whether f is an exponential function of x of the form f(x) = abx. If so, find the constant ratio.

ratio = 3

Use exponential regression to find a function that models this data.

Step 1.  Enter dataStep 2.  Graph dataStep 3.  Calculate regression equation

Alg2 4.7 and 4.8 Notes.notebook November 19, 2012

Find the best model for the given data

When calculating an exponential or logarithmic regression, make sure you eliminate data points that violate domain restrictions.
