Racing Car
Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse want you to drive a racing car.
1. Pretend that you are in the driver’s seat as you sing Racing Car.
2. Sing again and play a glissando each time you say “zoom.” Honk your horn by tapping “beep, beep, beep” on black keys.
Use with page 9.

One of the pieces that the music friends heard on the piano recital in the city was a waltz by Johannes Brahms. It was one of Nannerl Mouse’s favorites!
Brahms was born in 1833 in Hamburg, Germany. His father played the string bass and began teaching Johannes piano when he was only five years old. He gave his first piano recital when he was 14 and played pieces by J. S. Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. The next year he played one of his own pieces in a recital.
A friend introduced Brahms to Robert and Clara Schumann and they became life-long friends. Even though Brahms had many friends, he liked to spend his summers alone in the mountains where it was quiet.
Brahms often went on concert tours as both a pianist and a conductor. In addition to his works for orchestra, chorus, and piano, he wrote over 200 songs. One of these songs is the famous Brahms Lullaby that your parents may have sung when you were a baby, to help you go to sleep.
Draw or paste a picture of yourself next to Johannes Brahms in the Gallery of Famous Musicians.

Alfred’s Basic Adult Course: Popular Hits, Level 3Arr. Tom Gerou
Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course: Popular Hits answers the often-expressed need for a variety of supplemental material in many different popular styles. Students can play attractive versions of the best-known music of today. This book is correlated page-by-page with Lesson Book 3 of Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course and Level 3 of Alfred’s Basic Adult All-in-One Course. When pieces from the Popular Hits books are assigned in conjunction with the material in the Lesson Books, new concepts are reinforced in a fun and motivating way, increasing the student’s interest in piano study.

Distances between tones are measured in INTERVALS, called 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, etc.
Notes played separately make a melody. We call the intervals between these notes MELODIC INTERVALS.

Pentascale ProBy Melody Bober, Gayle Kowalchyk, and E. L. LancasterThese books introduce students to all major and minor five finger patterns in all 12 keys. The pentascales are divided into similar groups to promote ease in learning. Book 1 includes the Group 1 Keys (C, G, F major and minor) and the Group 2 Keys (D, A, E major and minor). Book 2 includes the Group 3 Keys (D-flat, A-flat, E-flat major and minor) and the Group 4 Keys (B-flat, B, G-flat or F-sharp major and minor). In each book, technical exercises are provided in each key with an interesting teacher accompaniment. A short solo is included for each key, in addition to an optional teacher duet accompaniment. Two or three of these solos can be grouped together for variety in performance.

Minor Scale ProAn Introduction to Minor Scales Beginning on White KeysBy Melody Bober, Gayle Kowalchyk & E. L. LancasterMinor Scale Pro, Book 1 introduces students to the seven white-key minor scales in a systematic way. Basics of building a natural minor scale are presented, first by learning the pattern of whole steps and half steps, and then relating each minor key to its relative major. Optional teacher duets are included for both one-octave and two-octave scales in both volumes.

Minor Scale Basics
3. How do major and minor scales relate to each other?
Every major key has a relative minor key that has the same key signature. The relative minor begins on the 6th tone of the major scale. The relative minor of C major is, therefore, A minor.
Because the keys of C major and A minor have the same key signature (no sharps or flats), they are relatives.
The minor scale shown below is called the natural minor scale. It uses only notes that are found in the relative major scale.
2. How can I build a minor scale?
Any minor scale can be formed by following this sequence of whole and half steps: W H W W H W W.
C MAJOR SCALE
A MINOR SCALE
1. What is a minor scale?
A minor scale consists of eight notes following a specific sequence of whole and half steps. Each scale begins and ends on the keynote—the note that has the same name as the scale.

Museum MasterpiecesBy Catherine Rollin
Inspire musicality and creativity as your students visit some of the world’s greatest art museums through Museum Masterpieces. In this series, composer Catherine Rollin has created musical expressions of some of the great works of art found in museums throughout the world. The paintings that inspired these pieces are beautifully displayed on a four-page color insert at the center of the book, along with historical notes about each painting.

RainPhiladelphia Museum of Art
In Rain (1889), the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)
captures the bleak mood of rain falling on the wheat fields of southern France, where he was living at the time. Van
Gogh’s distinctive use of brushstrokes and textures creates a unique mood in each of his paintings. In Rain, he uses diagonal
slashes of paint to create the rain. (Music: page 24)
Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer INeue Galerie, New York
The commissioned painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1903–1907) is a prime example of the “Byzantine” or “Golden” period of Austrian artist
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918). In this work, oil, silver, and gold leaf are used on canvas, and the shimmer of the gold creates a magical effect. The story of how
this painting made its way from Vienna to New York is captured in the movie Woman in Gold. (Music: page 26)

Gentle Ocean Waves
Martha Mier
Character Pieces in Romantic StyleBy Martha Mier
Composers first began writing character pieces in the Romantic period as a personal, inward-looking form of musical expression, on a smaller scale than the sonatas of the Classical period. These new character pieces emulate this important art form from the Romantic period and are carefully graded for students at the late elementary to early advanced level. Some are bold in character, while others are lyrical and introspective.

Ride the River
Robert D. and Karen Vandall
The Colorado River flows as much as 6,000 feet below the canyon’s rim. The canyon was formed over millions of years by the river cutting through layers of stone and rock. Many people experience the Grand Canyon through whitewater rafting trips that offer a unique and spectacular way to view the canyon.

Hiking the Trail
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has more than 800 miles of horse and foot trails. One of the most popular footpaths is the 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail that runs through the park. The Appalachian Trail is a continuous marked footpath that goes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia, a distance of about 2,160 miles. Only about 200 people a year hike the entire Trail.
Complete the following measures using the rests on the hikers’ backpacks. Watch your step! Not all measures are incomplete.
