in my opinionTake Pride in Sendera

By Alice Adams

Don’t let our rocky economy ruin our neighborhoodIt’s a horrific situation when people lose jobs, make rapid moves or

lose their homes to foreclosure...but every time this happens in our subdivision, the entire neighborhood suffers.A recent article in the Houston Chronicle painted a bleak picture

when homes are lost or abandoned -- one of graffiti-gone-wild, vandalism, break-ins and feelings of fear among homeowners. Most, if not all of us, have chosen to live in Sendera because it has

always been a safe, clean neighborhood where families fire up the grill, walk their dogs and stroll with their babies. When foreclosures occur, median home values drop, often by as

much as 20 percent...and in worst case scenarios, even more. At the same time, according to experts, local problems grow worse, in part because some suburban developments lack the amenities and connections to jobs and services that they need to flourish.“With aging infrastructure and no leadership in the community, the

civic vitality sort of dies,” said John Walsh, the former president of Friendswood Development Co. and now the director of real estate and campus planning for the University of Houston System. “At that point, you are entering the death spiral.”The most pronounced local effects of our economic crisis are

apparent in “starter home” neighborhoods, which is what parts of Sendera were 10 years ago.Luckily, Sendera has remained fairly sturdy against the current

economy, although it’s a certainty when people move out and houses don’t sell for weeks or months, thereafter, revenue from homeowners association dues declines and this makes it harder to finance ongoing community upkeep. So, what can we -- as Sendera homeowners -- do to keep our

neighborhoods free of problems and crime?County governments in Texas have limited regulatory authority,

so some county commissioners are asking the Legislature for new tools to help neighborhoods with their quality-of-life issues. Some neighborhoods put pressure on city and county politicians to create task forces to help them maintain quality of life in their community.

Bottom line, it takes everyone to maintain quality of life in the neighborhood: * If you see a stranger in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to call the

police for help at 3-1-1. * If you see someone speeding, get a license number and call for

help. * If we, as a community, don’t open our doors to strangers, they’ll quit

coming into Sendera to sell their wares or panhandle for money.* If you see a street light that’s not working, notify the city.* We don’t get much in the way of regular police cruisers in Sendera,

so write a letter to the chief, asking for a greater police presence in Sendera. (Continued on Page 5)

S e n d e r a’s 5 t h Annual Run Into Summer Family Run will be held on the last day of school for AISD c h i l d r e n o n Wednesday June 3rd. Meet at the pool. The run will start at 7:00 p.m. It is only 1.1 miles in

length so there is no excuse for not coming out and participating. You can run, walk, socialize, or volunteer. I really hope one year we reach triple digit entrants. The trophies & medals have been ordered and now all we need is for participants to start signing up for the event! The finisher medal this year is going to be star medals. Trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd will also be available in the following male & female categories: Overall, 0-6 yrs, 7-8 yrs, 9-10 yrs, 11-12 yrs, 13-17 yrs, and adults. The ½ way incentive prize at our fabulous water stop is a secret still, which you will have to participate to find out. After the run, there will be some refreshments (water, sports drinks, oranges, bananas, maybe pizza or ice cream). Results & trophies will be handed out at 8:00 p.m.

Sendera's 5th Annual Family Fun Run Into Summer

Last year’s PRE-REGISTRATION worked well to reduce the check in time before the race & to increase attendance. So we will be doing the same this year. Please fill out the form below & drop it off in the envelope on the door of 9101 Hoffman Cove, marked 2009 Sendera Run Into Summer. We (Rec Committee) tried to make it as simple as we could, but if you can’t commit until the day of the event, please arrive by 6:30 p.m. So mark your calendars and/or start training to take home some extra hardware. Please don’t allow yourself to miss this FUN event! If you have any question, or would like to help, contact Sharon:

Sendera recreation committee news

Submitted by Suzann Vera I hope you didn’t miss the Fourth Annual Sendera Memorial Day Weekend Barbecue Cook off and Fair at the pool/playscape area on May 24th, or the Run Into Summer Family Run on June 3rd. Be sure and check the Sendera HOA web site (www.senderahoa.com) and the July Sendera Newsletter for information and pictures from both these great events.

* If you see old newspapers on your neighbor’s driveway, pick them up and put them in a bag until your neighbor returns home.

* Don’t just walk past litter on the street. Pick it up -- and the same goes for your dog. If it “squats” -- it’s your responsibility to clean it up.

Let’s take pride in Sendera, whether we’re in an economic recession or not. We live here -- and we’re proud homeowners. Let’s make our neighborhood reflect that pride...and it’ll be easy if we all work together!

Submitted by Gary Trumbo

There’s a new ACC Request Form in town and it’s available at your friendly Sendera website, from any ACC member, or Goodwin Management Co. As of the time you are reading this the new form (It’s got all the right stuff!) will be the only one accepted by the Sendera ACC.In another development, the Sendera ACC has issued an updated

guideline to solve that eternal issue – What is ‘appropriate screening’ to keep my garbage container from view? The quick take is that if you can see a garbage container from the street while standing 3 feet to the left (or right) from where the corner of the house would intersect the street, you are looking at a DCCR violation. So, how can you ‘appropriately screen’ this monstrosity from view? Well, with ACC approval prior to placement, you can put up a masonry wall, a little privacy fence, a tight weave wood or plastic lattice painted to match your house, or a large evergreen bush. To get the full scoop, check out ACC Information in the Document Library under Resources at www.senderahoa.com.

in the gardenSunday, May 3rd, provided perfect weather for the Sendera Garden

Club as we joined an Oak Hill gardening group for their annual plant swap. The invitation to participate was arranged by one of our members and we jumped at the chance to pick up interesting plants and new gardening friends. The event was hosted in a gardener’s paradise where beautiful plants,

whimsical garden art and delightful water features were everywhere you looked. In addition to the hundreds of seedlings available for adoption, there were books on garden design and other garden tools that people brought to share. Oh, did I mention the Mimosas and other great goodies on the buffet? If you’re interested in attending a meeting of the Sendera Garden Club,

be sure and check the web site. The location, date and time change depending on whose garden has something interesting to share.
