Principal’s Report
I would personally like to thank the outgoing committee of our P&C.
They have done a great job in financially supporting our school but
also they have been a great committee who worked tirelessly to
support Staff and make our school a great school. I appreciate how
harmoniously the group worked together and how productive our
meetings were. I’m sure our new committee will have the same
enthusiasm and commitment.
I’m sure Ms Birds class will have a great day enjoying some of
Canberra’s finest tourist attractions today. They are part of making a
tourism video for both national and international schools. I’m sure
they will be great ambassadors for our school and Canberra’s tourism
industry.
I would like to thank OzHarvest for their support of our school. For
the past 5 weeks they have been donating boxes of fruit to our
school. Our students have been enjoying loads of fresh free fruit. We
thank you.
We can’t wait for this weeks instalment of The ‘Y’ Factor. We have 7
acts and 2 will go through this week. Next week we will have the
“Wild Card Peoples Choice Award” where students and staff can vote
for their favourite act that didn’t make the final.
Kind Regards
Michelle Fahey

Nut Free
Please remember that we are a nut free school. We encourage
parents and students to look at what is packed in their child’s
lunchbox. Nutella, peanut butter and many
muesli bars all have nuts in them. Please
enjoy these foods in your home as we have
students at school that are highly
anaphylaxis to nuts and any contact may
bring on a life threatening reaction.

at this weeks semi final. Word is
we have 7 acts this week and we
will be voting 2 acts through to
the grand final. Exciting times!
Focus on Reading Strategies
Last Thursday Mrs Belling and Mrs Hickey attended
training on “Focus on Reading”. They will both be
trained to become trainers to teach the rest of our
teachers at Yass Public. We will all learn quality
strategies to implement in our classroom to improve
reading and comprehension outcomes for students.
Teachers start this training before the end of term one
and it will continue all year.
New Counsellor
Our new counsellor started last week. His name is
Neil Mordue. He will be job sharing across Yass Public
School, Boorowa Central and small schools. He will be
at our school each Wednesday. If you would like to
discuss your child with him, please contact the school.
Easter Raffle
A note will come home today regarding an
Easter Egg Raffle. Donation of any Easter eggs
or presents are very welcome as well as the
selling of tickets. The raffle will be drawn
during the final assembly for the term on
Friday, 7th April. As we are having our school
Cross Country and “Y” Factor grand final which
are whole school events, we will NOT be
having an Easter hat parade this year.
P&C Meeting
Last week we held our P&C AGM. There was a good
turnout and a new committee was elected. Liz Phillips
was elected President, Jess Howlett is the Secretary,
Belinda Banfield is the Treasurer, David Stuart and
Simone Hughes are Vice Presidents. Simone Hughes is
the Uniform co-ordinator and Sophie Peer is the
Canteen Co-ordinator. There were 4 people keen on
becoming a catering group. The committee also
approved a wish list from teachers for Robotics
equipment for coding classes, a listening post for KM
and 3 new electronic interactive TV’s for classrooms.
They also paid for servicing and repairs to air
conditioners.
A huge thank you to the outgoing committee and all
the work they have done over the past year. It has
been a great committee to work with and we
appreciate the support of our school.
Cross Country & ‘Y’ Factor Grand Finale
On the last day of school we will have a wonderful
family event. We will have our Cross Country School
Carnival on Friday morning followed by after recess
with our ‘Y’ Factor grand final assembly in which we
will also announce our Cross Country Champions. It
would be great to have parents come and help out on
our Cross Country event, then stay on to see our epic
grand finale for The ‘Y’ Factor.
Parent Teacher Interviews
A note went out on Tuesday advising parents that
parent teacher interviews will be on next Tuesday
evening, 28th March. Parents can ring the office to
make an appointment time. Generally spots fill up
very quickly so ring early. Interviews will be in 15
minute time slots.
Yass PSSA Soccer
Congratulations to all the players from both Berinba
and Yass Public who have been selected to represent
the area in the soccer trials, to be held at Goulburn on
Tuesday 28th March. The 4 girls and 13 boys will be
competing against 3 other teams from the
Queanbeyan and Greater Goulburn Districts. We hope
that you do well and that you
represent the region proudly.
We look forward to hearing
the next report in a future
newsletter.
PSSA Sports Trials
This term has found us very busy with many of our 5/6
senior students opting to try out in various sports. We
have had students try out to get a position into our
Regional teams in the following sports:
- Cricket - Rugby Union
- Rugby League - Netball
- Soccer
Mr Beresford has taken on the role of coaching the
Soccer team and will travel with them to Goulburn
when they compete at the Regionals in Goulburn.
We have had a great interest in both Netball and
Soccer where a full district team will be entered. We
have also had a successful entry into the Queanbeyan
District Rugby League team. Malakai Vea will
represent both Yass and Queanbeyan districts at the
Regional Competition.
Well done to all those who have given up their time to
try out for these sports and good luck for those that
still have more competitions to go.
I would also like to extend my apologies to Patrick
Koen. I neglected to include him when I announced
the District Swimming Champions. Patrick was the
recipient of the Boys Runner Up Junior Champion. I
am extremely sorry Patrick. You swam so well and
went to represent Yass Public and the district at
Regionals in Dapto. Well Done!!

Making Damper in Stage 1
As you may have read in the last newsletter students
in K/1R, 1/2B, 1/2S and 1/2V have been learning about
products in Science this term. To examine how
materials can be processed to make products, we have
been focussing on how milk is made and how it can be
turned into other products. Two weeks ago students
made butter by whipping cream until it separated into
butter and buttermilk. Last week we put our butter to
use to make damper. Students had a wonderful time
mixing ingredients and kneading the dough before
enjoying the fruits of their labour. Pictured below are
students from K/1R and 1/2B during the damper
making process.

Year 5/6 Excursions
Students in years 5/6 are working with the National
Capital Educational Tourism Project (NCETP) on a
special assignment in Canberra. NCETP is a
not-for-profit organisation that represents and
promotes our National Capital attractions to schools
around the country (and now internationally) to
encourage schools to visit Canberra on educational
excursions. They are producing a series of informative
short films on each attraction and the educational
programs they offer. The aim is to give teachers a real
sense of what students can expect and experience at a
variety of the attractions in the ACT.
We are holding three separate day excursions, at NO
COST, each with our students from Years 5/6. The
class groups will visit three attractions each and
participate in education programs. Whilst visiting the
three attractions, the student groups will be filmed.
The attractions each group will be visiting are:
MISS BIRD 5/6B- Thursday March 23, 2017
Excursion 1 - Science and Environment: CSIRO Discovery, National Zoo and Aquarium and the National Arboretum. MRS BARTON 5/6D- Monday April 3, 2017
Excursion 2 - History: National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Australia, Australian War Memorial.
MRS HOPLEY 5/6H - Tuesday April 4, 2017
Excursion 3 - Civics and Citizenship: National Archives
of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old
Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leo and
Otto Kringas’ mum, Kathryn for involving our students.
Thank you also to our wonderful parents for their
continued amazing support. We are absolutely thrilled
and excited to be part of this very special project.

My name is Charli and I

singing and dancing.
My favourite colour is

up I want to be a writer,
teacher or singer.
The Day of Grand Beginnings
Chapter One
“Fern”
“Shhh!” whispered Fern while sneaking through the
long reeds along the bank. The farm was quiet. The
only noise was a night owl hooting far in the distance
and the faint noise of crickets chirping in the tall grass.
It was twelve o’clock; the animals were asleep, the
only thing moving was a cow taking a midnight snack.
There was a secret society of foxes, they stole chickens
and brought them back to the stash. They have been
doing it for centuries. “You sneak in front Strawberry
and I’ll go around the back” said Fern. Their plan was
to snatch a chicken. After they grabbed a chicken they
heard a door swing open and then BOOM! A bullet
was shot straight at Fern, Fern lay there dead.
Strawberry ran away.
Chapter Two
“The Plan”
Fern was dead. The picture stuck in Strawberry’s
mind. Fern was like a father to her, with him gone the
nights got cold and lonely. She couldn’t stop to think
that she could have saved him. But she couldn’t hold a
grudge, she was now head fox. “Ding” the elevator
door opened. Strawberry was going to her first
meeting as head fox to talk about their next mission.
“Ding” level two the elevator exclaimed. When she
got to the Elders office she noticed that the “A” team
was standing in the corner next to the Elders. The “A”
team was a group of foxes to take down a human.
They already came up with a plan. The plan was to get
a fake fox, let the human shoot the fake fox and then
take him down.
Chapter Three
“Take Him Down”
The clock struck twelve, the foxes were in position.
The plan was set. The door slammed open, boom, the
fake fox was shot the plan was working. Strawberry
started to cry, it reminded her of Fern. ”Attack”
howled the foxes “Take him down, take him down”
whispered Strawberry. Strawberry tried to remember
the last time she saw Fern alive, but this is different it
is loud. The chickens were squawking, the foxes were
growling. The foxes pounced but the human was
stronger they needed help “For Fern” yelled
Strawberry. Strawberry was desperate as she ran, she
remembered Fern how he was strong and brave.
Strawberry pounced as the human fell to the ground.
As the human retreated the “A” team thanked her.
One of the elders came up to her and gave her Ferns
jacket with all the badges and medals. “He would have
been proud” said the elder. Ever since that day she
remembered it as the day of grand beginnings.

Angels. Each student throughout our wonderful
school will have a special role to play.
I would like to extend an invitation to all family and
friends of our school community to come and join us
