ALCOHOL

Knowledge is POWER!

Page 2: Alcohol

…and more

• 6,000 teens die a year from alcohol poisoning.

• Alcohol kills more people in one year than cocaine, marijuana and any other drugs combined!

• Accidents are the number 2 killer (after smoking!) of teens in the United States and accidents are PREVENTABLE!

Page 3: Alcohol

DID YOU KNOW…

• A “drink” equals 12 oz. of beer, 5-6 oz. of wine, or 1 ½ oz. of 80 proof liquor.

• Alcohol is a depressant.• It only takes one drink to impair

the brains ability to make decisions!

• The liver oxidizes one drink and hour (for adults) and NOTHING can make the liver work faster!

Page 4: Alcohol

Still more…

• Urination, Perspiration and Respiration are processes that rid the body of alcohol at approx. 1 drink every 2 hours for teens.

• “Proof” is a number that indicates the amount of alcohol. The % is half the amount: 80 proof = 40% alcohol.

• BAC is an objective measure of intoxication based on the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream.

Page 5: Alcohol

…and more

• People who start to drink in their teens become alcoholics faster than people who wait to start drinking.

• One out of every 10 people who choose to drink will become dependant on alcohol

• One out of every four cars you meet on the highway after 11:00 p.m. is driven by an impaired driver. That doubles after 1:00 a.m.

BAC LevelsThis chart shows how a drinker’s behavior changes as BAC (blood

alcohol concentration) levels increase. These may vary from

person to person.

Page 7: Alcohol

BAC Level & Change I n Behavior

.01%-.02% • The drinker feels relaxed, with a minor

impairment of judgment and memory.

.02%-.03%• No loss of coordination, slight euphoria

and loss of shyness.

.03%-.04%• Some loss of judgment and efficiency.

Alertness is significantly decreased. Behavior changes are noticed

.04%-.06%• Inhibitions are lowered. Decision-making

skills are affected. Drinker begins to lose control over actions and emotions.

Page 8: Alcohol

BAC Level & Change in Behavior

.06%-.08% • Walking, talking and balance are

visibly affected. The drinkers ability to react is notably slower. A BAC of .08% is considered legally intoxicated in Alaska.

.09%-.10%• Vision, judgment, speech, motor

coordination and reaction time are all severely affected. Loss of balance is common.

Page 9: Alcohol

BAC Level & Change in Behavior

.11%-.15%• Gross motor impairment and lack of

physical control. Judgment, memory, self-control are further affected. Irresponsible behavior is evident. There is a decrease in sense of pain. Emotional mood swings.

motor control; mental confusion. Slurred speech, severe mood swings. Unable to perform tasks. Dysphoria (anxiety, restlessness) predominates, nausea appears. Vomiting happens.

BAC Level & Change in Behavior

.20%- .30% • Unconsciousness usually occurs. All

physical and mental abilities are severely impaired. Central nervous system is acutely depressed. Total mental confusion. Respiratory system begins to shut down.

Above.30%• The drinker is unconscious, with an

irregular heartbeat and breathing patterns. Onset of coma, death is possible due to respiratory arrest.
