2 Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) is the industry’s first service router designed

and optimized for the delivery of high-performance carrier data, voice and video services.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router was designed with system characteristics, routing

and service capabilities that have made it the platform of choice in more than 50 new-

generation service infrastructure rollouts.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR functions asboth a powerful router and a flexible servicedelivery platform, and integrates with theAlcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager(SAM) to deliver efficient and streamlinedprovisioning, management and billing forInternet protocol (IP)/multiprotocol labelswitching (MPLS) networks.

Global service providers are preparing for thenext wave of residential and business servicedeployments. They understand that in orderto be successful they need a service deliveryinfrastructure that offers more bandwidth, delivered flexibly and reliably to morecustomers simultaneously, with increasedservice level guarantees.

Service providers are increasingly called uponto offer personalized voice video and dataservices that recognize the unique needs ofindividual users; that are, in other words, more“user-centric.” While the past few years haveseen a focus on network and service conver-gence with an emphasis on killer applicationsdelivered over a single infrastructure, theparadigm has shifted to a user-centric focusthat embraces the demand for a customizedand media-rich user experience across multipleaccess methods and across applications.

• For the residential market, the need todeliver broadcast TV and video-on-demand (VoD) services that meet highservice level agreement (SLA) standardshas introduced an inflection point thathas pushed network service providers toprofoundly rethink their service deliveryarchitectures. High-speed Internet (HSI)infrastructures were built around inefficientbusiness models that focused on cost-per-subscriber considerations and allowed forsignificant oversubscription and servicelevel leniency. New high-SLA voice andvideo applications have very stringentavailability, system characteristics, qualityof service (QoS), multicast and servicerequirements. Those requirements can onlybe cost-effectively addressed by rethinkingthe overall service delivery infrastructure.

Multi-Area, Access-AgnosticConverged IP/MPLS Infrastructure

• In the enterprise space, new managed dataservices — such as virtual private LANservice (VPLS), IP virtual private networks(IP-VPNs) and multiservice transit appli-cations using pseudowires (PWs) over avariety of access methods (frame relay[FR], asynchronous transfer mode [ATM],Ethernet, high-level data link control[HDLC]/point-to-point protocol [PPP],etc.) — allow service providers to attractand retain a wider customer base at a lowercost through converged and more reliableIP/MPLS service infrastructures. In turn,

end-user customers benefit from a widervariety of service offerings, increasedservice flexibility and accelerated serviceactivation.

With the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR, serviceproviders are able to build a new type ofcost-optimized highly-available and feature-rich service delivery infrastructure that canseamlessly scale to address both residentialand managed data service market needs, while delivering significant economies ofscale, skill and scope.

5Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR platformprovides purpose-built, highly availablesoftware and hardware architectures thatallow network operators to “right-size” theirservice infrastructure buildout. The 7750 SRprovides the necessary built-in servicescapabilities and packet processing headroomto allow service providers to scale serviceinstances, subscriber count and bandwidthwithout incurring exponential capital oroperating expenditures (CAPEX or OPEX).

The critical features and functions thatdifferentiate the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SRfrom a typical Internet-era edge router arethe system characteristics (delay/jitter) andservice-related capabilities that were tightlyintegrated into the product architecture atinception.

An Industry FirstThe challenges that service providers arefacing have evolved from addressing rampantbandwidth growth for Internet traffic toenabling cost-optimized and highly resilientservice delivery infrastructures that can scaleand ensure profitability while minimizingthe overall deployment risk in the long run.

Existing Internet-era routers and enterpriseswitches were designed five to eight years agoto handle bandwidth growth for best-efforttraffic. These platforms were not optimizedfor new-generation service infrastructurerollouts, as they are limited by their systemcharacteristics (delay/jitter, packet re-orderingand loss) and their inability to scale servicesacross all dimensions (number of interfaces, bandwidth, service instances and policies, performance level, etc.).

Similarly, so-called IP service platformshave appeared on the market, but they weredesigned and optimized for low-speed, best-effort consumer services (mass-market digitalsubscriber line [DSL] for residential service). They do not have the high-availability,scalability or service capabilities that willallow them to cost-effectively enable large-scale (tens of millions of customers), high-speed data, voice and video service rollouts.

A New Class of Platform

The change from traditional best-effort Internet

routing and enterprise switching to true service

routing is not an incremental step — it is a

radical advancement that has required a complete

rethinking of the product architecture and design

at inception. This inflection point is where the

Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR has established a

leadership position.

Page 6: Alcatel-Lucent 7750 - Service Router - daywireless.com fileAlcatel-Lucent7750ServiceRouter 3 TheAlcatel-Lucent7750SRfunctionsas bothapowerfulrouterandaflexibleservice deliveryplatform,andintegrateswiththe

6 Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router

An improved regulatory environment andthe clear potential for incremental revenuehave convinced many incumbent serviceproviders to rapidly make considerableinvestments in new service deliveryinfrastructures. By adding video, voice andmanaged data services to their existing high-speed data and Internet service lineups, service providers can improve theircompetitive position in the market.

All service providers competing in thismarket are faced with the challenging task ofoffering a compelling value proposition fortheir service offerings in order to achieve andmaintain a high average revenue per user(ARPU) and to sustain the long-termprofitability of their services (see Figure 2).

For service providers who successfully meetthis challenge, benefits will include theability to:

• Successfully sell new, higher value servicesto their established customer base

• Leverage their brand equity to offer high-margin bundles and minimize churn

• Progressively build their serviceinfrastructures around profitability models,as opposed to network or infrastructureconstraints

• Consolidate multiple specialized networksinto a cost-optimized and efficient serviceinfrastructure that will achieve economiesof scale and maximize the profitability ofservices

The Profitability Factor

Figure 2 - Projected ARPU for Various Triple-Play Services

Page 7: Alcatel-Lucent 7750 - Service Router - daywireless.com fileAlcatel-Lucent7750ServiceRouter 3 TheAlcatel-Lucent7750SRfunctionsas bothapowerfulrouterandaflexibleservice deliveryplatform,andintegrateswiththe

7Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router

• Streamline network operations acrossprotocol layers to achieve economiesof skill, and evolve the overall serviceinfrastructure to a more homogeneous, scalable and flexible architecture

• Streamline business operations to achievesignificant economies of scope acrossservice offerings (e.g., order fulfillment, support, billing, marketing)

• Future-proof their service infrastructures forthe future layering of ultra-high bandwidthbusiness and residential applications

• Minimize the overall financial and tech-nological risks over the next seven toten years

In order for service providers to achievesignificant economies of scale, skill and scopethey need to evolve their second-mile, andperhaps first–mile, infrastructures to a highlyavailable, secure and cost-optimized servicedelivery foundation that can scale to supportexisting and future ultra-high-speed residentialand business service rollouts. This requiresa comprehensive approach to the servicedelivery architecture design.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR offersunmatched density and performance: up to400 Gb/s full duplex redundant capacity inone-third of a carrier’s system rack. This, along with its advanced service-orientedfeatures, makes it the ideal choice for serviceproviders who are looking to roll out a newgeneration of triple-play infrastructure-basedservices.

An important capability that distinguishesthe Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR from Internet-era routers is the built-in packet processing, service headroom and flexibility that ensuresthat new features can be soft-loaded with thepromise of uncompromised performance upto 40 Gb/s per slot. Application-specificintegrated circuit (ASIC)-based implementa-tion, on the other hand, requires a costlyand lengthy line card re-spin each time anew feature or extension is required. For theservice provider this results in high cumulativeCAPEX, disruption of service and slot exhaus-tion as each new feature and capabilityrequires a new specialized line card or module. This approach lengthens time-to-market forservices and introduces significant supportand turnaround time.

“The Alcatel 7750 SR is a great example of a multiservice edge router. It not only combines thescalability that’s required for these consolidated IP/MPLS networks, but it also incorporates a numberof different features that help service providers deliver IP/MPLS-based services. That is really thedistinguishing factor between the 7750, for example, and some other traditional edge routers onthe market today. It makes it a great fit for those consolidated network environments.”MARK BIEBERICH, SENIOR ANALYST, COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE, THE YANKEE GROUP
