Synthetic Slings

Our synthetic rope sling is designed slimmer yet has a higher WLL. It has a protective sleeve over the entire sling giving it

maximum protection.

It is the perfect size recovery sling for attaching through holes in an aluminium truck where, Simply feed one end of the

sling into a rim hole, from the outside, and run it back through another holes, from the inside out. This creates a basket with the

sling allowing for easy lifting or pulling of a truck or trailer. You can attach your winch line directly to the eyes of the sling rope or use

a screw pin shackle if there is the possibility of severe angle. Should the sleeve be damaged, cut, the strap is still safe to use, just

reposition the sleeve where the rope will be rubbing. Best suited for aluminium or steel rim attachment points, the synthetic sling

rope sling can still be used in many other lifting or pulling recovery applications – provided it is within the WLL of the sling.

Strand Rope Inspection and Retirement

Inspection and Retirement Checklist Any rope that has been in use for any period of time, will

show normal wear and tear, Some characteristics of a used

rope will not reduce strength whilst others will. Below we

have defined normal conditions that should be inspected

on a regular basis.

If upon inspection any of the below conditions are found, you

must consider the following before deciding to repair or retire it:

➢ The length of the rope

➢ The time the rope has been in service

➢ The type of work the rope does

➢ Where the damage is located

➢ The extent of the damage

In general, it is recommended to:

➢ Repair the rope if the observed damage in is a

localized area

➢ Retire the rope if the damage is over extended areas

Compression – Not a Permanent Characteristic

WHAT > Visible Sheen

> Stiffness – reduced flexing

> Not to be confused with

melting

> Often seen on winch drums

CAUSE > Fibre moulding itself to the

contact surface under radical

load

REMEDY >Flex the rope to remove

Compression

Pulled Strand – Not a Permanent Characteristic

WHAT > Strand pulled away from rest of

the rope

> Is not cut or otherwise damaged

CAUSE > Snagging on equipment or

surfaces

REMEDY > Work back into the Rope

Twist – Not a Permanent Characteristic

WHAT > The line of pics spiral around the

circumference of the rope

CAUSE > Unaligned during rigging

connection induced

REMEDY > Remove lower rigging connection

and straighten rope construction,

reconnect and continue.

Abrasion – Repair or Retire

WHAT > 25% reduction

CAUSE > Abrasion

> Sharp Edges and surfaces

> Cyclic tension wear

REMEDY > If possible, remove affected

section and resplice with a

standard end-for-end splice.

> If resplicing is not possible,

retire the rope

Melted or Glazed Fibre – Repair or Retire

WHAT > Fused fibres

> Visibly charred and melted fibres

Yarns and/or strands

> Extreme Stiffness

> Unchanged by flexing

CAUSE > Exposure to excessive heat,

shock load or a sustained

high load

Discolouration/Degredation – Repair or Retire

WHAT > Fused fibres

> Brittle fibres

> Stiffness

CAUSE > Chemical contamination

Inconsistent Diameter – Repair or Retire

Inspection Procedures

Internal abrasion can be determined by pulling one strand away from the others and looking for powdered or broken fibre filaments

(Fig 1 and Fig 2)

To determine the extent of outer fibre damage from abrasion, a single yarn in all abraded areas should be examined. The diameter

of the abraded yarn should then be compared to a portion of the same yarn, or an adjacent yarn of the same type that has been

protected by the strand crossover area and is free from abrasion damage (Fig 3)

Technical Data:

Comparing TOUGH synthetic Rope VS Metal Winch Line Item Synthetic Rope/Winch Rope Metal Wire Cable/Winch Cable Strength 30 to 90% higher breaking strength than normal steel.

Similar strength as same volume of top class wire cable.

Larger diameter winch line including more weight needed to match strength of small synthetic line.

Weight Much lighter than steel cable – 85-90% lighter. Better for vehicles sensitive to weight. Floats for easy recovery.

Front end heavy for weight sensitive vehicles. Will sink in mud or water.

Fray Quality cable comes with anti-abrasion sleeves or special coating

Can develop sharp burrs or wire splinters, requiring gloved handling.

Care Clean with hose. Wash with mild soap and water in a bucket.

Light coating of chain oil or WD40.

Corrosion Does not Corrode. Can rust if exposed to moisture, Galvanised coating can wear off.

Spooling Needs protection against heat from drum brake. Prone to kinks that can make drum spooling difficult.

Breakage Can be field repaired. Line drops when it breaks underload. Does not store as much energy as metal cable.

Cannot be field repaired. Dangerous whip backlash when it breaks under load.

Exposure Susceptible to UV chemical heat and abrasion exposure.

Minimal to no impact unless exposed to water.

Others Torque-free, floats on water, easy to splice, has no memory. Superior flex fatigue, superior wear. Extremely low stretch. Breakage under load does not cause injury – cut hands.

Kink. Cut hands. Dangerous when it breaks under load. Hard to splice.

IMPORTANT NOTE Despite all the benefits that our Winch rope has over steel wire cable, the proper precautions must be taken when using

synthetic rope for winching. Synthetic winch ropes are more prone to chafe damage than wire rope, so ensure that the winch rope is

rigged properly and isn’t rubbing on rocks, trees or other abrasive surfaces whist under tension. Cleaning the dirty synthetic winch

rope using mild soap and water after use is also necessary. With proper use and car, the Winch rope will last as long, if not longer,

than steel wire rope.
