ALBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL PROUD Member of the crossing point learning community Week 8 Term 2 14 June, 2017 Dear All SAD NEWS- Last Friday morning we received some very sad news about a member of our school community. One of our parents, Mr Muriithi Murigu, died suddenly the evening before. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with his wife Kate, and children Murigu and Elaine. The children’s teachers informed their classes yesterday and a note went home to parents with key messages about support. If your child wishes to talk to you, please let them know you are aware of this incident and that you will listen to their concerns at any time they wish to share them. Also please ring the front office if you or your child would like to talk to our school counsellor, Ms Danae Bray. There are also additional sources of support for you and your children: Kids Helpline on 1800 551800 or www.kidshelp.com.au and Lifeline on 131114 or www.lifeline.org.au NAIDOC WEEK- THEME “OUR LANGUAGES MATTER”- NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is held the first week of July but as this falls in our holidays, we are celebrating NAIDOC Week during this week. Yesterday morning at a special assembly, we welcomed Owen Dunlop, manager of Management Creative Kids and local Wiradjuri artist David Dunne who gave the Welcome to Country. David and Owen will be working with the students over the next three days, teaching the K-2 students about Wiradjuri language, culture and painting story poles outside the Lodge. We look forward to the colourful end result. Year 3-6 students will be using the Wiradjuri Dictionary App. Thanks to Mrs Dicketts for organising this event and securing a grant to fund it. STAGE 3 CAMPS-The very excited 69 students and staff left for the Year 5 camp at 6:30am this morning, in the dark, to travel to Melbourne and then Ballarat. The students are all looking forward to the educational and social experiences over the three days. We will try to put regular updates on the school Facebook page, including any changes to the expected time of arrival on Friday afternoon. Please ensure you are able to pick your child up at the expected time of 3:45pm. The final payment for the Year 6 camp was due yesterday. All payments must be made to the front office or online before the students leave on their respective camp next Tuesday 20 June. Please ring the office if you are not sure if you have paid the total amount. GOVERNMENT REBATE– Yr 6 students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING- Next Tuesday the Multicultural Public Speaking finals will be held at Thurgoona Public School. We wish our school representatives, Alice Eggleton (4CCB) Mia Sheather (4CH), Hayley Coulter (6AS) and Rory Harrap (5/6AP) good luck and all the best when delivering their speeches. KINDERGARTEN 2018- We are now taking names for the 2018 Kindergarten intake. Please call into the office or phone to give your child’s details. We are also providing school tours for new Kindergarten parents at 2:15pm on Monday 14 August. Please ring the office if you would like to join this tour. Also please pass on this information to neighbours, relatives and friends who live in our zone and are wishing to enrol their child next year. STAFF NEWS- On Friday we will say farewell to our wonderful school counsellor, Ms Danae Bray who will commence her maternity leave. We wish her all the best as she and her partner Georgiou prepare for the arrival of a sibling for Layla. From the beginning of Term 3 until the end of the year, Ms Leisa Grantham will be replacing Ms Bray as Student Welfare teacher. Ms Grantham is currently the Learning and Support teacher at Albury West Public School and we welcome her to Albury Public School. Mrs Pam Kaur, District Guidance Officer and school counsellor, will be available to complete any psychological assessments we require during this time. TERM 3- A reminder that Monday 17 July is a pupil free Staff Development Day. All students return Tuesday 18 July and the last day of Term 3 is Friday 22 September. Please note it is a 10 week term. HOME LEARNING SURVEY To assist us in the review of our current homework policy, the Home Learning Review Committee (including representatives from the staff and P&C) has drafted a simple survey to poll the school community and to assist us in the evaluation of current practices. Information will aid us in the creation of a modernised policy, with meeting individual student needs at its core. Coming home today, with this newsletter is the Parent Survey. Please return it to the Home Learning Review Box located at the Front Office by Thursday 22 June. Late surveys cannot be accepted. Students in Years 2 to 6 and staff will also be given the opportunity to have their say in similar surveys taking place over the coming week. Jessica Brooker, Deputy Principal (Rel).

SPORTS NEWS PSSA NETBALL- Our Junior teams both had good wins and showed some great shooting skills. The

Senior Blue team won but had to fight hard to beat Jindera. The Senior Gold team came up against a very in-form St Pat’s team and although they were beaten they continued to work hard and play the game in a positive way. Well done girls!

Sue Burgess, Coordinator.

PSSA SOCCER- PSSA Gold junior soccer team:- Last week our team played LEPS at Bonnie Doon Oval and we won 5-2. Archie proved that Luke isn’t the only one that can score for the other team kicking the two goals for LEPS. PSSA Gold senior soccer team: Last week our team played LEPS at Bonnie Doon Oval and we won 4-1. Joel was a great

captain and Charlie played well. Remember we have a bye for the next two weeks due to Year 5 and Year 6 camp. Joel Border, Coordinator.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXCURSION Our Year 6 students and accompanying staff are getting excited for next week’s educational excursion to Australia’s national capital! 69 students and 5 staff will take off next Tuesday 20 June at 7:30am with an anticipated return on Friday 23 June at approximately 6:00pm.The students have had many questions, mainly regarding uniform. As in previous years, students will need to wear their school uniform on all days. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, they will have the option of wearing their sports uniform (no Riverina attire). On Wednesday, due to a visit to Parliament House, students have been asked to wear their best formal winter uniform- similar to what was worn for our school photos. Students will be able to wear appropriate casual clothing each night for participation in fun games and physical activities. School spray jackets should be packed in case of wet or inclement weather. Thank you to all families for providing medical notes and information promptly. Unless other arrangements have been made with the school, final payment was due yesterday. Please endeavour to contact the school tomorrow if your payment has not yet been finalised. Any further questions can be directed to class teachers. It will be a great excursion! Updates will be available on the Albury Public School Facebook site. Tuesday 20 June- 7:00 - 7:10am- Arrive at APS and place large luggage in a neat line along the footpath outside the fence, adjacent to your designated bus. 7:15am- Students assemble on the basketball court and report to their allocated

day group teacher. If your child has medication, it should be given to Miss Sutton at this time with a clear label, frequency of use and dosage required.

7:30am- Depart Albury Public School. Nathan Fisher, Assistant Principal. HEAD LICE

A timely reminder that checking your child’s head and hair is something that should be done regularly. Wednesday, Newsletter day, is a great time to remember this task. A weekly routine will help discover the problem early so that treatment can begin. Please help us with this ongoing concern.

Hi everyone! Our new SUPER S TUESDAYS are doing really well – please remember that the ONLY items on Tuesdays for lunch orders are Sushi, Soup, Spaghetti Bolognese, Sandwiches, and Super Salads! Drinks, snacks and icy treats are available at recess and lunch times. PLEASE try to remember to order online before the cut-off time, which is 9:30am every morning. We are getting a number of children arriving at lunchtime in tears or close to it, because “my lunch isn’t in the box”. Emergency lunch packs are able to be provided, but it causes less stress to the child if we can all remember to order online or, of course, the old-fashioned handwritten way! If using the traditional method, please also remind your child to actually put the bag in the class order box. HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK! Any questions or suggestions please call Jude or Rachael on 6021 2370.

P & C PIE DRIVE- Albury Public School Pie Drive – Firstly a big thank you to all the families who

placed orders for some delicious Hotbake goodies. The response has been fabulous and as a result we have to deliver the orders over 2 days. The delivery dates are Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd June 2017. You will be notified in next week’s newsletter on the day to collect your orders. We need your plastic bags! If you have a

pile at home please drop them at the office in the container provided. It would be a great help. We also need helpers. If you are able to help out on either delivery day or have any queries, please contact Naomi Brown (0459759059).
