ISOTOPES SNAG SERIES SPLIT BEHIND ELY GEM: For the second straight game the Albuquerque Isotopes got a sterling starting pitching performance, this time courtesy of John Ely, who authored 6.2 shutout frames to propel the ‘Topes to a 2-0 win over the Round Rock Express Tuesday night at Dell Diamond. Ely cruised through 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out eight to earn his fifth victory of the season. The game was locked in a scoreless stalemate until the Isotopes broke through in the sixth thanks to an Express error. Aaron Miles started the rally with a lead-off single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Matt Angle drew a walk, Round Rock pitcher Zach Jackson attempted a pick-off throw to first that sailed errant, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. The miscue proved costly, as Jerry Sands bounced a grounder to third base, allowing Miles to trot home from third with the game’s first run. Albuquerque added some valuable insurance in the eighth on an RBI single by Angle, but this game was about pitching, and the Isotopes bullpen picked up right where Ely left off. After Derrick Loop and Scott Rice combined for 1.1 scoreless, the ninth belonged to closer Josh Wall, who pitched around a base hit to nail down his 12th save of the season in a 2-0 Isotopes shutout win. TOUGH ENOUGH: Michael Antonini takes the mound looking to snap a three-game losing streak and reach the victory column for the first time since April 21. The left-hander’s 1-3 record, however, belies how well he’s pitched, especially in his losses. Other than a rough start in a loss against Sacramento on May 17, Antonini has given up just one run in each of his other defeats, while working a total of 11.0 innings. The ‘Topes have been shutout just four times this year, but two of those came when Antonini started, a 4-0 defeat at Tacoma on May 11 and a 2-0 setback in his last start at New Orleans on June 1. MEMPHIS MAMA: For the first time in 2012, the Isotopes will entertain the Memphis Redbirds, Triple-A affiliate of the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The ‘Birds may be coming into Albuquerque tied with Tucson for the PCL’s worst record, but they historically play the ‘Topes tough. Last year, the two teams split their season series 8-8, with both teams going 4-4 at home. All- time, Albuquerque is 79-67 against Memphis and 43-30 against the Redbirds at Isotopes Park. The ‘Birds arrive with a familiar face in Eugenio Velez, who batted .339 (74x218) with 15 doubles, three triples, two homers, and 31 RBI for the Isotopes last year. HOME SWEET HOME: Albuquerque tonight begins a seven game stretch at home, which has been a boon to the record and the batting averages this year. The ‘Topes are currently riding a three-game home winning streak and boast an 18-10 record at Isotopes Park. After struggling to score runs on their just completed road trip, the Albuquerque offense can look forward to some home cooking. The ‘Topes have a team batting average of .329 with 32 home runs at The Lab and an average of .241 with 26 dingers on the road. SLYKE THY THIRST: The ‘Topes’ aforementioned struggling offense will get a boost with the arrival of Scott Van Slyke, who returns to Albuquerque today after almost exactly a month with the Dodgers. After getting his first big league recall on May 9, Van Slyke batted .194 (6x31) with two doubles, a homer, and six RBI in 17 games. His lone homer was a big one. On May 20, Van Slyke delivered a three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh that sent LA to a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on national television. Van Slyke was returned to the Isotopes when Juan Rivera came off the Disabled List. BCG IS TCB: Brian Cavazos-Galvez has been swinging a hot bat of late, rack- ing up hits in each if his last four games, a span in which he’s batted .462 (6x13) with four runs scored, a double, a homer, and an RBI. Cavazos-Galvez tonight returns to Isotopes Park, where he’s currently got an eight-game home hitting streak. NEXT HOMESTAND KICKS OFF TONIGHT!: The ‘Topes’ action-packed homestand begins tonight with an appliance giveaway courtesy of Baillios! Tomorrow, the weekend kicks off in style with an appearance by Dancin’ Bat Boy BBoy, followed by Saturday night fireworks, and an Isotopes Skateboard deck giveaway on Sunday. TODAY’S START: Michael Antonini makes the start coming off his second tough-luck loss of the season on June 1 in New Orleans when he allowed one run on four hits through 5.0 inning while walking three and striking out four in a 2-0 ‘Topes de-feat. Was called up for a second time on May 28 but for the second time did not see any game action before being optioned back to Albuquerque the next day. Made one relief appearance at New Orleans on May 29, working a scoreless inning, his first game action in seven days. Had his best outing of the season in a tough-luck 4-0 loss at Tacoma on May 11, allowing just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings while fanning a season-high eight, but wound up taking the defeat after the ‘Topes were no-hit into the seventh in the shutout loss. Had a 10-day period that saw him win his first game of the season and get his first Major League call-up but not pitch. After beating Oklahoma City on April 21, Antonini was recalled by the Dodgers on April 24 but did not see game action before being optioned back to Albuquerque on April 28. Had an unusual relief appearance at Iowa on April 11 when he was scheduled to make the start that day against the I-Cubs, but was held back while the Dodgers de-termined if there was a need to bring him up. In the fourth inning it was determined that Antonini could in fact pitch for the Isotopes and he immediately went into the game in relief of Francisco Felix, tossing five innings in which he allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in a 5-1 ‘Topes loss.
