Our MissionThe Alberta Healthy Living Program (AHLP) is a multidisciplinary team leading a community-based, self-management program that puts the participant at the center of all care. AHLP delivers accessible and diverse services to improve the quality of life of adults with chronic health conditions.
Our program offers free health education classes, self-management workshops, supervised group exercise programs, and nutrition services for adults with chronic health conditions in Calgary and some surrounding areas.
Free Health Education ClassesThere is a wide selection of classes offered through AHLP, including classes for specific health conditions. These classes are open to all adults who are interested in the class topic unless it is stated otherwise in the class description. All our classes are taught by healthcare professionals or other qualified instructors.
Participants should be comfortable in group settings and be able to understand English. There are some classes available in Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi.

NutritionRegistered Dietitians (RDs) facilitate the classes on nutrition and health conditions that have specific nutritional recommendations. Individual appointments with our RDs are also available in English, Cantonese, Hindi and Punjabi. All individual appointments are offered Monday to Friday during the day. If there is a class related to the health concern,the person will be required to attend the class first before booking anindividual dietitian appointment.

Group Exercise Program
Who is this program for?

Build confidence and learn about safe, effective exercise to manage your chronic health condition(s).
• Learn how to add appropriate amounts and types of physicalactivity into your daily routine.
• Learn about the effect exercise has on your chronic condition(s)• Learn how to modify exercise based on your own health
conditions, symptoms and abilities.
Group exercise classes are monitored by health professionals and supported by community fitness leaders.
Adults with at least one chronic condition who need help to safely get started with exercise and are interested in continuing to exercise at home or in a community setting after finishing the group exercise program.
Adults must be able to exercise on their own in the group and be able to apply information discussed in the group. Adults mustbe able to walk at least 5 metres with or without a walking aid.

Self-Management Program
After an assessment with AHLP exercise staff, you will be placed in a group exercise class that fits your current function, activity limitations and goals.
Classes are held Monday to Friday during daytime hours. This is a registered class and regular attendance is expected.
Education for exercise and related instruction are taught in English.
Self-referrals and referrals from Health Care Provider are accepted.
Better Choices, Better Health® is the self-management program offered through AHLP. Please refer to page 7 for more information.

Conserving Your Energy
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/MyalgicEncephalomyelitis (ME/CFS)
COPD – Breathing Matters
These three to four 1.5-hour classes will cover:
• What is COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)• Information about lung medications and inhalers• Helpful breathing tips• How to recognize when your breathing gets worse and what to do about it
This 2-hour class will cover:
• The signs and symptoms of ME/CFS• Effective strategies to manage common symptoms of ME/CFS• How to keep hope alive and move forward• Where to find accurate information about ME/CFS
This class is for adults who experience fatigue symptoms that interfere with their daily life.
These two 1.5-hour classes will cover:
• What may be making your fatigue worse• How to identify different types of fatigue• How to address extreme fatigue symptoms• Strategies for managing your fatigue

Diabetes EssentialsThis class is offered as one full day class or two 3-hour classes.These classes will cover:

Adults who are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and adults who want tolearn more about Type 2 Diabetes.

• General healthy eating recommendations• How fat, fibre and sodium are part of healthy eating• How to read food labels

Fibromyalgia: Facts and FunctionThis 2-hour class will cover:
• What is fibromyalgia and how to explain it to family and friends• A general overview of treatments available• The importance of exercise in the management of fibromyalgia• How to maintain and improve function when living with fibromyalgia
This class is also offered in Cantonese.
This 2-hour class will cover:
• Current knowledge about the neurophysiology and the biopsychosocial model• The Protectometer and 7 categories of danger (DIMs) or safety (SIMs) messages• The ability of our nervous system to change and either "wind-up" or "wind-down"• A brief review of strategies that can change your pain experience
This 2.5-hour class will cover:
• What is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)• Food-related recommendations to manage NAFLD

Living Well with Stress
Get Active Stay Active
Living with Stroke
This class is for adults who have had a stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) and want information on living with the effects of stroke.
This program is made up of six 2-hour classes.
• This program uses videos, activities and discussion to learn more about dealing with stroke and its effects• A caregiver, a family member or a friend should attend the program with you
These two 2.5-hour classes will cover:
• The sources and signs of stress• Healthy ways to cope with and manage stress• Developing a personal plan to address the stress in your life
This class is for adults who are not currently physically active and those who have not been physically active for some time. Adults who have a chronic condition(s) and want to learn how to include physical activity into their life.
This 2.5-hour class will cover:
• Components of an exercise program including cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility• How exercise can help prevent and manage chronic health conditions• Things to consider when exercising with a chronic health condition(s) including arthritis, COPD, diabetes, heart disease and/or pain• How sedentary behavior can affect health outcomes• How to set physical activity goals and plan for potential barriers

This class is for adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s, their families and support people.
This 2-hour class provides an overview of Parkinson's medications and why they are prescribed.
This class is for adults diagnosed with Parkinson Disease or Parkinson's Plus Syndromes, their families and support people.
This 2-hour class will cover:
• How speech and swallowing can be impacted by Parkinson disease• What normal speech and swallowing look like and how they change with Parkinson disease• When to see a speech-language pathologist to help diagnose and treat problems when they arise• Treatment strategies and research that is being done in the field of speech-language pathology and Parkinson's disease
This class is for adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s, their families and support people.

• How personal finances can be affected by living with a movement disorder• Creating a supportive housing environment and alternate housing options• Advanced care planning related to personal, health care and financial decisions to ensure your wishes are known

This class is for adults at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or those who have a family history of diabetes.
This class is also offered in Cantonese.
This 2-hour class will cover:
• What is prediabetes• How to prevent or delay developing Type 2 diabetes.
This class is for adults who are interested in learning about preventing falls.

Your Kidney Health
This class is for adults who are looking to improve their ability to positively cope with their chronic health condition and the ups and downs it brings.
This 2.5-hour class will cover:
• Motivating with self-compassion instead of self-criticism• The importance of practicing self-compassion to improve quality of life and health• Self-compassion strategies for daily life
This class is for adults who are having difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep.
This 1.5-hour class will cover:
• What can interfere with sleep• How to develop healthy sleep habits and identify behaviours that are not helping sleep• Practical ways to help improve sleep

This 2-hour class will cover:
• The parts and function of kidneys• What is chronic kidney disease (CKD)• Treatment options for CKD• Self-managing and preserving kidney health
