The West Coast General Hospital Auxiliary celebrated 100 years in 2013 with a float in the July 1st parade with ladies dressed in vintage clothing and about 20 members in their dis-tinctive pink smocks marching and carrying a banner. The hospital auxiliary have approximately 110
members. Last year they pledged $100,000.00 to the hospital for new equipment. And they also donated $50,000.00 to the Hospital Foun-dation towards the purchase of a new ultra-sound machine. To raise those funds the auxiliary operates
their Thrift Shop called “The Attic” and the gift shop in the hospital. In April The Attic was voted Best Thrift Shop
in the valley of the eight shops here. The Attic Thrift Shop donates clothing ,
housewares and bedding to the homeless shelter as well as supplying blankets and pillows to the SPCA.What they can’t sell in the
shop goes to the Salvation Army. The auxiliary also holds two bazaars a year,
one in October and a smaller one in Novem-ber called the Mini-Bazaar which they host in the foyer at the hospital. The auxiliary also sponsors about 20 stu-
dents as candy stripers (and they still call them candy stripers). Every year the auxiliary gives two $2000.00
bursaries to students going into a medical field.Last year they tried something new with a
separate store set up for Christmas in the mall on Johnston Road which worked very well and is planned again this Christmas. Several of the members donate their time at
the four blood clinics held every year. Like all hospital auxiliaries they need more
volunteers. To join the Auxiliary contact Rober-ta Jensen at 250-723-1299.
Hospital Auxiliary donates $150,000BACK
Above, the hospital gift shop and The Attic thrift shop below, are vehicles for raising funds for WCGH that are run by volunteer members of the hospital auxiliary.
The West Coast General Hospital Auxiliary sponsors the candy striper program at the hospital with more than 20 students volunteering.

Valley SENIORS Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni
seniors complexes.
Bob Hudson makes music and memoriesBob Hudson was
born to play music.“I had begged for a
piano from the time I was six years old, but my parents could not afford one so I got an accordion that I played until I was 12,” says Hudson, one of the most popular music volunteers for seniors in the Alberni Valley for several decades.
The practice on the accordion helped Hudson know the chords he wanted to use to accompany his right hand and helped develop the style he has at the piano today.
The former school teacher was born in 1940. At the time his father was on his way to England and then Dieppe, where he was captured and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 8. Hudson’s mother moved to Vancouver to await the return of her husband and enrolled Hudson in the Ruth Morton Baptist Church Sunday School.
Hudson attended General Brock School and Van Tech, which he chose because of their science program. In 1958 he went to the University of BC for a year. But, in order to support his mother, separated from her father at that time, he worked for BC Tel for four years, reapplying later to UBC and finally graduating in 1965.
By this time, he had met Margaret, whom he married in 1965.
After taking his one year of teacher preparation, he applied for teaching positions. The first district to respond was Port Alberni, and since his brother-in-law lived here, he accepted.
“When I looked back, I feel blessed to have chosen this community,” he comments. “This is a great place without the cost and traffic of the Vancouver area, for example.
“Once here, I joined several organizations such as the Auxiliary RCMP (12 years); the Sproat Lake Fire Department (35 years). I also sang with “Timbre!” choral group for a number of years, including a special performance by the group at the Carnegie Hall in New York.”
Bob and Margaret have three children, all living in different communities in the province, and enjoy their seven grandchildren who visit them every summer in their house at the lake. Their house by the lake was a dream for Hudson, who had always wished to live closer to the water.
Hudson’s career as a teacher in the science department was held at ADSS, where he taught general science and biology, subjects he enjoyed very
much. He also enjoyed his students, whose “warm greetings continue to brighten my life,” as he states.
Hudson’s interest in playing music for seniors began in Saskatchewan in 1976, as he visited his elderly grandmother. There he played at a seniors complex where she was living and then other
seniors came with instruments and played and sang old songs.
After the opening of Fir Park Village in the early 1980s, he played the piano from time to time and once a month with his church group at the “Hymn Sing” sessions. He did the same when Echo Village opened in 1992. And, after
the sudden passing of Gloria Venning, he was asked to conduct the weekly “Music Therapy” program at Fir Park.
“I now play weekly at Fir Park, Abbeyfield and Heritage Place as well as Westhaven and Echo Village once a month and also once a month at their “Hymn Sing” at Fir Park and Echo Villages,” says
Hudson.Every December,
Hudson joins the RCMP carollers by playing Christmas songs on their visits to all the seniors’ homes in the Valley.
“I really enjoy being able to play the old songs and keep them lively, but far more than this, I enjoy the seniors and their response to music.”
Hudson, who continues being one of the most popular musicians in Port Alberni, was recently recognized by the Abbeyfield board of directors and presented with a certificate of appreciation, on behalf of the residents, for his volunteer work for more than 10 years.
ORLANDO DELANO/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Bob Hudson plays the piano at Abbeyfield House with Betty Cartlidge at their regular musical Fridays session.

Artist gains perspective in artKATYA SLEPIAN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
There’s a bright new mural on Third Avenue and it represents a brand new beginning for Port Alberni-based artist Shayne Lloyd.
Bright, colourful and located in front of the David Oscienny Accounting Office on the Third Avenue hill, it’s a visually loud welcome to uptown.
“I’ve always wanted to do a mural,” said Lloyd.
“Paint big, not just on a small little canvas that you can squeeze into your room but a big wall.”
It’s also the permanence of a mural that attracts Lloyd.
“I’ve gone through periods of doing lots of art and I would destroy my art. I would cut up canvases and smash windows I’d painted on,” he said.
“You just end up feeling sh**ty. At the end of the day that art could still be possibly appreciated by somebody...better to just give it away if that’s what I was just going to do.”
The past couple years have come with some challenges for Lloyd. Having the mural to focus on for the past year has allowed him to get away from them.
“To have something positive to focus on has been good because...I felt like an
ostrich with my head in the sand, shut off from all my friends and family.”
The mural helped Lloyd dig his way out.
“It was just something positive to focus on because if I didn’t have that, well, idle hands are for the devil’s use. That’s why I keep busy.”
The idea for the mural has evolved since he first began working on it.
“At first, I just wanted to do one big humpback on the whole thing.”
Since then, it’s evolved three scenes—the Hupacasath welcome figures at Victoria Quay, the fish in the river and an octopus in the ocean.
The idea for the mural itself came from Lloyd.
“Waiting for someone to just hire you to paint a mural...
who’s going to do that?”
Instead, Lloyd asked at the David Oscienny accounting office if he could do the work and they would just pay for the supplies.
“That worked out well.”
But Lloyd’s not doing the work for nothing.
“At the end of the day, it does promote me as an artist,” he said.
Lloyd’s not overly comfortable with the idea of self-promotion, though he has begun to realize that it is necessary if he wants to continue to grow as an artist.
“It’s a fine line because I don’t want to inflate my ego. But I work in a bank —I know you need money to live. If you don’t have money, it’s hard to live.”
But he’s tired of making that money the way he has for years, by working at
the bank.“If I can make it by
doing something I love, that’s great and that’s where the self-promotion comes into play.”
One avenue Lloyd’s exploring is teaching art.
“I’m going to be getting a fine arts degree with a year-and-half teaching post-baccalaureate,” he said. The goal is to start school in the fall and get the qualifications to be able to teach high school art.
“Rather than teaching people what to do with what little money they have, it’s time to try something more in line with where my spirit is at.”
But while becoming an art teacher is a goal, it’s not the end goal.
“I feel like if I’m really humble, if I do really hard work then maybe I don’t need to become a teacher, maybe I can just do art.”[email protected]

Fire Extinguisher Sales & Service
In 1956 a young 18-year old boy, Tony Vanschie, left his homeland of Holland and traveled to Canada with only two suitcases.
He ended up in the Fraser Valley, Agassiz to be exact and there he worked on a dairy farm, as farming is what he knew about from his homeland.
Vanschie only worked there for a year before he came to the Alberni Valley and went to work at the APD mill for six years.
He then went to work for a local roofer as an apprentice and then worked for Hayes Roo ng and was with them for 16 years before starting out on his own with Vanschie Roo ng a company that is still in business.
As Vanschie said, “Once I started my own business I never looked back.”
Vanschie hired his son Rick to work with him 30 years ago and he also has an employee Tom Pearce who has been with him for 27 years. His son
Mitch lls in whenever he can nd the time. They also have a part time employee, Wyatt Race.
The Vanschies on aver-age, roof 200 houses a year. Roo ng has changed over the years in that they used to use asphalt shingles and now use laminated berglass shingles. They also do shake roofs, torch on, metal and insulated
decks. Vanschie owns the compa-
ny but his son says he is not the average boss.
“My son calls me the snooper-visor as I have a hand in every job we do. I am also the oldest working roofer in the Valley.”
Vanschie is liability and WCB approved and also of-fers seniors a 10% discount.
