ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Alberni Valley skies were filled with a familiar sight and roar this past weak as the Hawaii Mars took flight for the first time in almost two years.
The iconic waterbomber flew
over the city and dropped water on the Alberni Inlet and Sproat Lake on Friday, ensuring that all systems were ready to go.
All it needs now is a call to action—one that’s yet to materialize, according to provincial fire
information officer Navi Saini.
“It has not flown any missions and it’s really hard to say when it wll be used,” Saini said on Tuesday morning.
“It’s another tool in the toolbox in terms of airtanker support.”
While the Mars
might still be sitting and awaiting orders at its Sproat Lake bomber base, it’s still costing the province.
The Coulson Group signed a $450,000 30-day deal with the province with an option to extend for another 30 days.
Those are just
standby costs; if the Mars flies under its provincial contract, that will cost the province another $11,000 per hour in fuel and flight costs.
When that flight happens depends on a variety of factors, Saini said.

mostly just being location,” she said.
“The location of the fire and the ability of the aircraft to be able to scoop water out of a body of water
nearby.”According to the
province, the Mars can only scoop water from 113 lakes across B.C.
It also depends on the objectives of the foresty fire service at
each individual fire, said Saini.
Cooler temperatures mean that the entire provincial airtanker fleet —four Conair Group Fire Boss airtankers and the Hawaii Mars—is being
used less than it was the prior week.
“Provincially we’re seeing decreased airtanker mission compared to a week ago at this time, just due to the cooler, wetter weather,” said Saini.
The usage of the Mars will be no different than that of the rest of the airtanker fleet.
“We get a request and send the group that’s closest and the most efficient for the job,” said Saini.
The waterbomber has typically been used along coastal areas and will likely be used there again, said [email protected]

A controlled burn on Thursday evening causes a flare up on Dog Mountain.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Controlled burns have allowed the forestry firefighting service to completely contain the Dog Mountain Fire, said B.C. Coastal Fire Centre fire information officer Ellie Dupont.
“The two staged ignitions we did the last two days worked really well. We got the results we wanted,” said Dupont on Friday afternoon.
The controlled burns were meant to deprive the blaze of
the fuel it needed to spread.
“They wanted to burn off all the understory and reach down from the fire to the shore,” said Dupont.
There were two areas the the Wildfire Service was most concerned about.
“The ithmus and then another area that bordered the shore where there were islands and cabins nearby,” said Dupont.
“So they got those two spots.”
The news from CFC was even better on Monday morning.
“It’s now in mop up stage as of this morning,” said Dupont on Monday.
“It’s at 100 per cent containment,” she said.
The fire is currently at 450 hectares.
“We still have 11 crew there looking after the hotspots that are still there,” Dupont said.
“Sometimes you can get roots on fire so they’ll dig down and put them out.”
Dupont couldn’t speculate as to when the fire would be fully extinguished.

Cousins re-connect with Google
What a fabulous electronic new age we live in. Last month I came home to find a message on the phone that said “ Hi Norman, this is your cousin calling.”
He and I grew up together in Montreal, we are both the same age, we lived downstairs in a duplex and my aunt, uncle and cousin all lived upstairs. My cousin and I bicycled every where together, we drank pop from the local Texaco Station, played cops and robbers together and did all the things that children did in those days of zero electronics.
At some point my Dad got a bee in his bonnet about the relatives interfering in his life (my mother had died) and forbid me to play with my cousin. We found a way around that. We would go down to our respective basements, knock our special knock and I would swing the little door that covered the peephole aside and we would talk.
When I was 13 years old my father moved us to the South Shore, far away from Montreal.
My cousin and I re-connected when I was 19 and came back to Montreal live with my Aunt.
We double-dated, dropped the girls off
after the date and then he and I would go for Chinese food. I asked my cousin why we never offered the girls Chinese food. He said “ Why should we ?”
Both male virgins got married at 22 years old. There the tale ends…he went on to be respectable, I went on to be a sort-of hippy photographer.
That is, until my cousin’s iPad searches with Google turned up my web page and information. He did phone back and we just chatted forever. ….et voila, now we e-mail constantly.
Since I am going to Montreal in August for my nieces wedding, I will stay the week
with my cousin in his condo.
I have gone back to 1960 in my photo/slide collection and found
shots of my cousin, his grandparents, his parents, me at 19 years old, the two of us with our arms around each other at about eight years old. I scanned the negs and the slides at 1200 DPI ( so that I would be able to blow up the image and not have it get pixelated) in TIFF format (so that I would be able to edit in a non-lossy format). Then I Photoshopped as well as I could. Most of the negatives are very old and scratched, some have fog, etc.
Next I blew each one up to about a 5x7-inch and printed it on double weight tru-matte paper on my Archival Epson printer. They look wonderful and they will last for well beyond 100 years. Another month and a bit and the photos will be in my cousin’s hands.

Columnist Norman Silverstone (can you guess which one he is?) poses with his cousin in Montreal, when they were both eight years old.
Self first isn’t selfish
I’ve developed a bad habit of putting other
people’s needs ahead of my own. Actually, I’ve had this habit my entire life, but lately it’s been getting worse.
I know. What mother doesn’t do that? The smart ones, that’s who.
There’s a great analogy about being in an emergency on an airplane and placing the oxygen mask on yourself first so you’re able to help those around you. It makes perfect sense. But do I typically help myself before others? Not usually. And I’m especially not doing it now.
I’m writing this article in the wee hours of the morning, not because I’ve
woken up early or stayed up late, but because I didn’t go to bed at all. I’ve been pulling a lot of all-nighters recently and only getting three to five hours of sleep the rest of the time. That lack of sleep is catching up with me.
I’m more forgetful, less productive and absolutely exhausted. And when it comes time for column writing, I often feel empty, like I have nothing to offer.
“You need some me-time,” my 12-year-old daughter, Daisy said yesterday. I agree. I do.
For many months I’ve been putting myself on the back burner while concentrating on helping other people. I haven’t been taking care of myself physically or mentally, and nodding off at the computer while in an upright position has
become a common occurrence.
This time last year I was doing far better. Despite being extremely busy, I still managed to hike daily, eat healthy and get plenty of sleep. I was also making time to do things I enjoyed. I felt happier and more creative then; I want to feel like that again.
But with work, volunteering and family obligations, where do I find the time?
“Just do it Mom,” Daisy said. “Go away for a day and only do things for yourself to get used to it. After that, put yourself on the schedule like you did before. We’ll all be fine.”
I knew she was right. I also knew my family would benefit if I followed her advice.
I’m going to make taking care of myself a priority.

From / A3We are far more
effective at helping others when we are at our best.
Spending at least 10 minutes a day to write in a gratitude journal will be part of that plan. Every time I get into the daily routine of reminding myself of the things in life I’m thankful for, I become a more focused and positive thinker. And that mindset always helps me realize that I should be as loving and respectful to
myself as I am with the people I cherish.
It also helps me understand that putting myself first isn’t selfish or bad like I grew up believing it was, it’s actually vital to the way I want to live the second half of my life. By becoming stronger and healthier, I will have much more to give my family, my friends and the world in general.
Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist from Kelowna.
Taking time for me
The No. 7 steam train is taking a break due to the extreme heat and dry conditions, so the railway has brought in the No. 11 diesel electric locomotive to pull the train to McLean Mill. The oldtime logging demonstrations have also been suspended due to fire hazard concerns and replaced with a “loggers’ talk” and an opportunity to explore the equipment up close.
