Regional trail system a good Valley vision
A gem of a trail winds its way along the Stamp
River downstream towards Stamp Falls. This trail is variously called the Angler’s Trail, Stamp Long River Trail, and Sayachlas t’a saa’nim in the Hupacasath language.
This trail was constructed nine years ago by the same dedicated group of people who are building the Alberni Inlet Trail. And they are building these trails with a vision in mind.
The vision is to have a regional trail system that links to other regional trails in other communities on Vancouver Island. And this vision is slowly becoming a reality.
On the other side of the river and downstream from the Stamp Falls Provincial
Park boundary, there is the Green Max Trail that runs from somewhere near the boundary of Stamp Falls Provincial Park down to the end of Coleman road along the west side of the river.
Then there is an obscure piece of Crown Land just north of the confluence of the Stamp and Sproat Rivers where a local trail has been established to bring you to Mackenzie Slough. Further downstream below the confluence, there is Somass Park, a city-owned property sandwiched between Service Road North and Arrowvale Campground.
Still further downstream below the Tseshaht Reserve is the road leading to the Somass Estuary Ducks Unlimited property.
From there the route could turn inland and follow Rogers Creek up to the Rogers Creek Nature Trail until it comes to the
Log Train Trail. Part of this section is under construction now. Then the route turns south and follows a network of trails behind the city all the way to Ship Creek Road.
From there it links up to the Alberni Inlet Trail of which stages 1 and 2 are completed and stage 3 is almost complete. The section is the Runner’s trail that heads inland toward Lake Cowichan, but ends at the old Franklin Camp.
And finally the Tuck Lake Trail takes you to Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Boundary just west of Cowichan Lake.
One side branch of this trail could extend over the shoulder of the Beaufort range from Cherry Creek to link up with a trail that goes up from the mouth of the Big Qualicum River to Horne Lake. Another could branch off from Hector road and follow the old road up the Sproat River to Sproat Lake Provincial
Park, and beyond to the Bomber Base.
This is an impressive length of trail. From above Stamp Falls to Franklin Camp is roughly the length of the West Coast Trail. But there are gaps along the way. Several of those gaps are because of private property. Negotiations with land owners and local First Nations would be needed in order to attain agreements to cross these lands.
Agreements have been successfully achieved with Island Timberlands, and so
there is a precedent. Some of the gaps are
also because bridges are needed. Some of
them can be quite simple affairs such as the one across St. Andrews Creek and
some of the other smaller creeks in the existing network. But there are also some very significant ones where a crossing may just not be possible and a re-think of the route may be necessary.
It’s a big ambitious vision. And it is part of a larger vision, to have a trail the entire length of Vancouver Island. This initiative is called the Vancouver Island Spine Trail. Much of this route has been completed. And I believe that it will be completed in the future.
Once it is in place it will be possible to hike from Victoria to Cape Scott. What a magnificent ambition.

HEALTHY LIVINGActiveHealth tip: Quitting
smoking can be one of the most important
changes to make to improve long-term health prospects.
Keep healthy into the golden years
Health may be the furthest thing from a
young man’s mind, while the body’s physical ability is at its prime.
While life can offer excitement and adventure, when one is young, no man is invincible, and age can take a toll for some. The most common reasons that men get sick and develop long-term chronic diseases are primarily due to lifestyle choices and behaviour. Smoking, poor eating habits, alcohol binge-drinking, plus sedentary work with few active hobbies and lack of daily exercise can lead to health problems.
The four major chronic diseases that North American men develop as they age—which are preventable—are heart disease, prostate cancer, gout and osteoporosis. Due to a variety of reasons, for the first time in history, the children of this generation are predicted to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents, and this relates to environmental conditions of our fast food, convenient culture.
With some lifestyle adjustments, these health issues can be prevented and long-term quality of life can be preserved. Quitting smoking can be one of the most important changes to make to improve long-term health prospects. There are many resources available to
help people kick their butt habit.
Some important nutritional elements to highlight daily include colourful vegetables and fruits, which offer essential vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Dark green and orange vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, peas, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, carrots and squash offer folate, vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus the B vitamins and beta-carotene.
Healthy fats that come from nuts/seeds and fish are natural ways to ensure dietary goodness. Omega-3 fats may help prevent inflammation and auto-immune problems down the line and are good for brain health.
One of the easiest and best ways to get the essential Omega-3 fats are eating salmon, halibut, sardines, tuna, mackerel, trout, herring, ground flax, chia seeds and hemp hearts. One serving of salmon is equivalent to five supplements (1000mg) of wild salmon oil omega-3 pills. Food is better
than a pill, since it tastes better, not to mention the protein, vitamin D and calcium that the fish provides that a supplement will not.
Tomato-based products, such as vegetable juice and sauces are important nutritional powerhouses for men due to the high content of lycopene. This red phytochemical acts as an antioxidant protecting cell damage and may help prevent prostate cancer.
Studies show that men who take 10 servings a week of
processed tomato products have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. The benefits are shown with food sources rather than supplements. Enjoy salsa, tomato sauce and V8 juice to load up on healthful lycopene for prevention.
Gout and osteoporosis also have nutritional components, as well as other lifestyle factors that can affect risk. Gout can be aggravated with alcohol and processed (smoked, cured and salted) meats, such as pepperoni, sausage,
bologna and salami, in addition to foods high in purine, such as shrimp.
Osteoporosis has been known as a woman’s disease, but
men also have high rates of this bone robbing condition and it can affect quality of life in senior years with risk of fractures and disability.
Ensuring adequate intake of foods/fluids high in calcium and vitamin D are key factors to help protect bone loss after middle age.
Yogurt, cheese, canned fish with bones, and low fat milk are all good sources of calcium for prevention of osteoporosis in later years. Aim for two to three servings of these common foods daily for protection.
Our sedentary culture of driving,
sitting in front of electronics, and vegging out on the couch are all causing a high rate of ‘sitting disease’ and promoting our body to lose out on flexibility, strength and tone. Moving more with fun activities and sports are critical for good health.
Our bodies were meant to be in motion much of the time. Prioritizing activity will help to go a long way to keep healthy and well into the golden years.
Sandra Gentleman, RD, is a local registered dietitian and steward of Canal Beach.

It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our sister, Verna, of Woss, BC. She died peacefully with her family by her side, while staying in her favourite spot, Qualicum Beach.Verna is predeceased by her husband Ray. She and Ray spent 30 wonderful years together in Port Alberni.
Verna was always involved and cared about all her family and friends. She loved cooking,
gardening, knitting, going to the casino, playing bingo, and sitting beside the ocean. Verna loved animals and always had a pet to care for. She belonged to a bowling league, and was very involved with the Somass Legion Branch 169 as the Social Planner and was also a member of Sorority, Beta Sigma Phi Chapter. Verna worked as a nursing care aid, a home care worker and had several careers as a stenographer/secretary and administrative positions.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Brent (Sonja), sisters: Sandra (Rocky Dog), Debra (Don), Lenora (John), nieces and nephews: Dale (Elisa), Lara, Jody, Michael (Gwen), Darrell (Candice), Daniel, aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces and nephews and many friends.

GORD MEYERGord is enjoying retirement after 38 years at the Pulp Mill. He likes to be active and fi nds that a paper route is good exercise. Having a regular route has also helped him get to know more people in his neighbourhood. Gord’s favourite pastimes are gardening and playing cards - especially cribbage.
Tanis Baxter started as a paper carrier in Parksville and then helped her niece and nephew with a route when she came to Port Alberni. Now she does the route herself for the exercise and a little extra cash. Tanis is a cat lover who enjoys reading, and walking.
