1 Alaska Climate Research Center Alaska Statewide Climate Summary March 2019 The following report provides an overview of the March 2019 weather. The report is based on preliminary data from selected weather stations throughout the state of Alaska. “Departure from normal” refers to the climatological average over the 1981-2010 period. Temperature Warm air masses from the northern Pacific and the Bering Sea resulted in an extremely warm month of March 2019. During the latter half of February, an Omega-type blocking pattern dominated the synoptic situation over Alaska. Between centers of low pressure over eastern Siberia and eastern Canada, a high pressure ridge produced warm and sunny conditions in much of the Interior. This pattern persisted into March, but began disintegrating during the first week of the month. The large scale circulation shifted to a more zonal regime, which brought unsettled weather and warm, wet storms, particularly to the southern coastal regions. Around mid-March the pattern flipped again and a very persistent high pressure ridge developed over Alaska and northwestern Canada, where it remained largely stationary for over two weeks, leading to a prolonged period of mostly sunny, very warm weather. An equally persistent area of low pressure centered over the Bering Sea produced a southwesterly flow along Alaska’s west coast, pushing warm air from southern latitudes far into the polar regions (Figure 1).

ThefollowingreportprovidesanoverviewoftheMarch2019weather.Thereportisbasedonpreliminary data from selectedweather stations throughout the state of Alaska. “Departurefromnormal”referstotheclimatologicalaverageoverthe1981-2010period.

TemperatureWarmairmassesfromthenorthernPacificandtheBeringSearesultedinanextremelywarmmonthofMarch2019.DuringthelatterhalfofFebruary,anOmega-typeblockingpatterndominatedthesynopticsituationoverAlaska.BetweencentersoflowpressureovereasternSiberiaandeasternCanada,ahighpressureridgeproducedwarmandsunnyconditionsinmuchoftheInterior.ThispatternpersistedintoMarch,butbegandisintegratingduringthefirstweekofthemonth.Thelargescalecirculationshiftedtoamorezonalregime,whichbroughtunsettledweatherandwarm,wetstorms,particularlytothesoutherncoastalregions.Aroundmid-MarchthepatternflippedagainandaverypersistenthighpressureridgedevelopedoverAlaskaandnorthwesternCanada,whereitremainedlargelystationaryforovertwoweeks,leadingtoaprolongedperiodofmostlysunny,verywarmweather.AnequallypersistentareaoflowpressurecenteredovertheBeringSeaproducedasouthwesterlyflowalongAlaska’swestcoast,pushingwarmairfromsouthernlatitudesfarintothepolarregions(Figure1).

Among the selected stations, Kotzebuerecorded the highest deviation with 21.9 °F above normal temperature. Delta Junction,UtqiaġvikandFairbanksfollowwith18.9,18.5,and16.2°F,respectively.StationslocatedintheInteriorandinwesternpartofthestate,suchasBettles,McGrath,Gulkana,NomeandBethelreporteddeviationsfromnormallargerthan10°F.Southernstationsrecordedpositivebutlessextremedeviationsoverall.TheSoutheast,especiallyKetchikan(2.7°F)andJuneau(4.0°F),sawtemperatures closer to normal values. Monthly temperature deviations for all stations arelistedinTable1.Tenoftheselected19stationssetnewmeanmonthlytemperaturerecordsthismonth.InUtqiaġvikandKotzebue,March2019wasthewarmestinmorethanahundredyears.MeanmonthlytemperatureinUtqiaġvikreached5.9°F,whichis5.5°FwarmerthanthesecondwarmestMarchrecordedin1904.Kotzebuerecorded23.0°F,respectively7.4and9.5°Fwarmerthanthepreviousrecordsin1898andin1998.InBethel,NomeandDeltaJunction,meanmonthlytemperaturesforthismonthweremorethan1°Fwarmerthanthepreviousrecordsreportedin1981,1981and1965,respectively.Likewise,Bettles,Fairbanks,Homer,McGrathandTalkeetnaexperiencedthewarmestMarchonrecord.GulkanaandKingSalmonsawthesecondwarmest,Anchoragethethirdwarmest,andColdBay,Juneau,KodiakandYakutatthefourthwarmestmeanMarchtemperatureevermeasured.Figure3showstimeseriesplotsofMarchtemperaturedeviationsinFairbanks,KotzebueandUtqiaġvik.Atmanystations,multipledailytemperaturerecordswereset.AllvaluesanddatesarelistedinTableAintheappendix.Figure4showstemperaturedeviationsatalloftheselectedstationsforeachdayofthemonth.Consistentpositivedeviationsfromnormalindicateprolongedandunusuallypersistenthightemperaturesthroughoutthestate.StationslocatedintheSouthCentralandSouthEasternregion,suchasGulkana,Talkeetna,Yakutat,JuneauandKetchikan,recordedcoolerthannormaltemperaturesonlyatthebeginningofthemonth,andpersistentpositivedeviationsafterwards.SouthwesternstationslikeColdBay,St.PaulIsland,Bethel,andNomereportslightlycoolerthannormaltemperaturesforafewdaysinthemiddleofthemonthandpersistentlywarmconditionsotherwise.Notonlythefrequencyofdayswithwarmerthannormaltemperatureisexceptionallyhigh,themagnitudeofthedeviationsisalsonotablylarge,especiallyintheInterior(Bettles,DeltaJunction,Fairbanks,Gulkana,andMcGrath)andintheArcticregion(Utqiaġvik).Atmanylocations,MarchtemperatureswereclosertowhatcantypicallybeexpectedinApril,andwellabovethenormalrangeforMarch.FairbanksMarchtemperaturescomparedtotypicalApriltemperaturesareshownasanexampleinFigure5.

PrecipitationLikeinFebruary,MarchprecipitationpatternsweresplitbetweentheNorthandWestandthesouthernandsoutheasternpartsofthestate.ThePanhandle,somestationsofthesouthernInterior(DeltaJunction,Talkeetna,Gulkana),andAnchoragerecordeddrierthannormalconditions(Table2,Figure6).TherestofAlaskasawwetterthannormalweather,withrelativelylargedeviationsintheNorthandNorthwest(Table2,Figure6).Utqiaġvikwasthewetteststationthismonthinrelativetermswithalmost489%ofnormalprecipitation.Bettleswasalsoparticularlywet,recordingmorethan367%ofnormalprecipitation.Nome,KotzebueandKingSalmonfollowwith276.9,268.2and210%,respectively.DeltaJunctionrecordedthelowestrelativeprecipitationwithonly5.6%ofnormal,closelyfollowedbyAnchorageat10%andGulkanaat20%.InTalkeetna,Juneau,andKetchikanroughlyhalfofnormalprecipitationwasrecorded.ModeratetoseveredroughtconditionspersistinthesouthernPanhandle.Figure6showsthemonthlyprecipitationsumsateachstationininches.Itcanbeseenhowstronglyprecipitationvariesbetweenstationsnotonlyduringthepastmonthbutalsointheclimatologicalmean,duetothediverseclimatologicalconditionsthatcanbefoundinAlaska.Ketchikanexperiencedthelargestdeviationfromnormalinabsolutetermswithmorethan5inchesbelownormal(Figure7).

SnowOverall,snowfallwasbelownormalthismonth.Althoughthespatialpatternisnotwelldefined,southernstationsshowthehighestreductionofsnowfallinrelativetermsornosnowfallatall.InYakutat,Juneau,Bethel,andKodiakzerosnowfallwasrecorded.Thismonth,allthesestationsreportedprecipitationlargerthanzero,andthelasttwostationsexperiencedevenlargerthannormalprecipitation(Figure6),indicatingthatallprecipitationfellasrain.AtColdBayandFairbanks,Marchsnowfallwasalsolowerthisyearwithrespectively50and57.1%ofnormal,whileKingSalmonandBettlesrecordedclosetonormalsnowfall.At285.7,220.2,159.3and128.3%ofnormal,Utqiaġvik,Nome,KotzebueandMcGrathsawgreaterthannormalsnowfallthisMarch(Table3).Table3:Monthlysnowfallsum,normal(1981-2010)anddepartureexpressedasapercentageofthenormal(1981-2010)fortheselectedstationsthatmeasuresnowfall,March2019.Station Snowfall(in) Normal(in) %ofnormalAnchorage 0.0 9.9 0.0

ArcticSeaIceFigure8showstimeseriesofdailyArcticseaiceextentupdateduntilMarch28,2019.ArcticseaicelikelyreacheditsannualmaximumextentonMarch13th,whichisclosetothe1981to2010mediandateofMarch12.Thisyeartieswith2007astheseventhlowestannualmaximumofthesatelliterecord.The2019maximumextentis860.000squarekilometersbelowthe1981to2010averagemaximum(Figure8).Theseaicemeltseasonhasmostlikelystarted,andseaiceextentiscurrentlyjustroughly0.15squarekilometersovertheextentoficein2017(Figure8,magentaline),whichwasthelowestofallthetimeforthistimeofyear.Afterlastmonth’sdramaticreductioninseaiceassociatedwithhightemperaturesandverystormyconditions,thismonth,theBeringSeasetsanewrecordoflowestMarchseaiceextent.Themeanmonthlyseaiceextentisroughly282.437squarekilometers,morethan19.000squarekilometerslessthanthepreviouslowestrecordof2018.TheunprecedentedlowBeringseaiceincreasesfloodingriskonAlaska’sarcticcoasts,andimpactscrabbing,ice-fishing,andwalrushuntingconditions.Likewise,intheChukchisea,theseaiceextentisatitslowestmeasuredvaluewith828.694squarekilometers,roughly1500squarekilometerslessthanin1989.

NewsworthyEventsSnowmeltinAnchoragewasthefourthearliestonrecord,behind2016,1980and1987.Snowdepthofunderoneinchisnormallyreachedaroundmid-April;thisyeartheoneinchthresholdwasreachedonMarch30th.Fairbanksisnotfarbehindwithasignificantlybelownormalsnowdepthof6inchesonMarch31st.FairbankssawconsecutivedayswithlowsabovefreezingduringthelastweekofMarch,thefirsttimethishaseverbeenrecordedinMarch.

Breakuponmanyriversisexpectedtooccurearlierthannormalthisyear,asis“green-up”day,definedbytheNationalWeatherServiceasthefirstdaytohave“leafbudsinbirchandaspenopenjustenoughtoproduceafaintbutdistinctgreenflushthroughtheforestcanopy”.TheNenanariverisreportedtobeflowingatNenanaandasmallicejamhasformedontheTananadownstreamoftheBoondox.TherehasbeensomespeculationthatbreakupoftheTananaatNenanamayoccurbeforetheIceClassicentryperiodends–thiswouldbeunprecedentedinthelonghistoryoftheevent. Anumberofsportingeventswereaffectedbytheunusuallywarmtemperaturesandlackofsnowandice:Mushersofthe2019IditarodTrailSledDogRacehadtodealwithstretchesofwetandsoggytrailandadjustedtheirrestschedulestodealwiththewarmweather.ThecourseoftheracewasmovedoverlandbetweenElimandGolovinbecauseofalackofseaice. Duetothethiniceassociatedwiththerecenthightemperatures,theSonotKkaazootNordicSkiRace,heldinFairbanksonSaturdayMarch23rd,wasmovedfromitsusualcourseontheChenaRivertoBirchHill.The40and50kmeventswerecombinedandshortenedto30kmandthe20kmeventwasshortenedto9.5km.Unexpectedlyhightemperatures,togetherwithheavyrainfalleventsandstrongwind,raisedavalancheriskinmountainousareas.TheAlyeskaResortinGirdwood(ChugachStatePark)shutdownmountainoperationsforfewdaysduetohighavalancherisk.OnMarch9thanavalancheonMadsonMountainclosetoMoosePass(KenaiFjordsNationalPark)killeda33-year-oldAnchorageresident.Asecondfatalitywasreportedinthesameweek:a34-year-oldwasburiedbyanavalancheonTakshanukMountainnearHaines.Bothincidentswererelatedtoweaklayersinthesnowpackassociatedwiththeunusualweather.ThisinformationconsistsofpreliminaryclimatologicaldatacompiledbytheAlaskaClimateResearchCenter,GeophysicalInstitute,UniversityofAlaskaFairbanks.Formoreinformationonweatherandclimatology,visitthecenterwebsiteathttp://akclimate.org.Pleasereportanyerrorstowebmaster@akclimate.org.AppendixTableA:Dailytemperaturerecords,March2019,sincethebeginningoftherespectivetimeseries.avgt=dailymeantemperature,mint=dailyminimumtemperature,maxt=dailymaximumtemperature.Station Date Element NewRecord Yearofold
