WHY YOU SHOULD OWN A GULF COAST FILTER.. .

Most all filters on the market today use some form of paper fibers or corregated paper as filtering elements. The Gulf Coast paper towel Filters also use paper but in the form of a roll of quality 6” OD paper towels such as Bounty. Using paper towels provides the means for many times more ounces of fil- tering medium which produces a more efficient and cost effective filter. Almost every magazine to do with maintenance has companies explaining why you should buy their filter elements. We can supply you with our Gulf Coast Filter and not tie you down to us or anyone else for the elements to fit it. All of our Heavy-Duty filters were designed around a quality 6” roll of paper towels available at more loca- tions than all other filter elements combined! Using the same element for both oil and fuel makes more sense to us. We believe you will agree. The factory filters on your diesel equipment will last much longer, and you already know what they cost, just so long as you service our filters on a regular basis and keep your engine maintained in a normal manner. Clean oil in a healthy engine does not have to be drained and replaced. Also, it is plain common sense that an engine will last longer and perform with more power and efficiency with clean oil and clean fuel rather than dirty oil and dirty fuel. So, step up to the highly advanced and the most cost effective filter that YOU SHOULD BE USING, “Filters that Really Work’: from Gulf Coast Filters, Inc.

OIL We can eliminate oil changes and increase engine life WITH A BY-PASS GCF PAPER TOWEL FILTER AND LABORATORY OIL ANALYSIS.

WHY ADD A BY-PASS OIL FILTER? To answer this question i t is important to review the

full-flow and by-pass filter systems. In the full-flow system, all the oil that lubricates thc

engine is first pumped through the full-flow filter. Since this amount of oil is quite large, 10 to 20 quarts in a V8 car engine and much more in a large diesel engine, the full-flow must be porous (somewhat like a sieve) so that it will not restrict this large volume of oil.

The advantages of the full-flow system are: It protects the bearings and all other moving parts of the engine since the oil has to go through it first. It is especially useful during break-in when close tolerance parts are “wearing-in”. By filtering all the oil used in lubricating the precision parts, the larger particles that could seri- ously damage the engine are removed. EXCEPT: during start-up, if the oil is too cold or thick to readily flow through the filter, the pressure relief valve opens and allows unfiltered oil to lubricate the engine. Also, this valve opens when the full-flow filter becomes clogged. The reason for this is that dirty oil is better than no oil.

In the by-pass system, the oil is regulated through the filter in a very small amount and then returns directly to the oil pan. This filtering system filters a small percent- age of the oil and refreshes the engine with oil that has passed slowly through a much denser element than the full-flow element. Since it filters at a very slow rate, and it is not responsible for supplying oil for lubrication, it is possible to insert a very dense element that will trap the microscopic particles that grind away the precision moving parts of the engine. With the proper element, it also can remove sluge producing contaminants (mostly water and carbon particles). The disadvantage, of course, is that only a small portion of the oil is filtered at a time. An interesting note is that many industrial en- gines still come factory equipped with only the by-pass filter system. SO WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

Both! I f your engine is equipped with a full-flow filter system leave it intact to do its designed function of pro- tecting the moving parts of the engine. Add a quality GCF by-pass filter to keep the oil CLEAN!

Nov. 9, 1985, INDAL ALUMINUM5 #407 had run 117,275 miles without a single expensive oil change!! Oil analysis confirms the excellent condition of the 400HP CUMMINS engine and the I5 W-40 oil. Each 12,000 miles it costs about $14.00 for 2 rolls of Bounty and make-up oil plus IO min. labor to service the GCF S I Oil Filter. (Marvin Matheny, Truck Mgr. (601)863-2852, Gpt., MS)

Ed Douglas, Maint. Supt. over 575 engines #for John E. Graham & Sons, Morgan City, LA (504) 395-9557, person- ally inspected this 12V71 Detroit Diesel in the oirfield workboat “CORA G” when one cylinder suffered a hydro- static lock and bent a connecting rod. The engine was in “new” condition with no visible wear. Only the one cylin- der and rod assembly was replaced and the engine put back in service. The oil had not been changed in over 8,000 hours! (August 18. 1983 to February 20, 1985).

Two Mack trucks operated by Pepsi-Co la of Gulfport, Mississippi. Mr. Cleve Allen, owner, calls for a new filter to be installed as soon as a new piece of equipment arrives. He has used paper towel filters since 1976.

FUEL WHY SPEND YOUR DOLLARS ON FILTERS THAT WERE DESIGNED FOR THE PROBLEMS OF THE PAST? INSTALL A GCF PAPER TOWEL FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR AND VIRTUALLY ELIMINATE DOWNTIME AND INJECTOR PROBLEMS DUE TO TODAY’S HEAVILY CONTAMINATED FUEL.

The Problem: Contaminated FUEL (Diesel or Gasoline)

The Causes: Storage, condensation, !ransfer operations, sloppy maintenance procedures, chemical reactions, and other causes.

The Result: Damaged storage tanks, fuel tanks, filters, injector pumps, injectors, and finally, DOWNTIME.

The Solution: Install a G C F Fuel Filter (single, double, or in banks or 2 or more singles or doubles, depending on volume desired.)

Advantages: 1. First, and foremost, IT WORKS. The GCF Fuel Filter is positively the best buy on the market today. It is simple to install, even more simple to service. 2. The elements are available at more locations than all other Fuel Filter elements combined.* (How many times have you run out of filter elements after the parts houses have closed?) 3. Conventional filter elements (Primary and/or secon- dary filters presently on your engine) will last indefinite- ly when the GCF Fuel Filter element is serviced at neces- sary intervals (at the first loss of RPM or an increase of 3-5” above clean filter reading on vacuum gauge). Clean filter reading on vacuum gauge ideally should be 0” but never over 7” under maximum load. Higher reading than 7” indicates additional filter(s) needed in parallel. 4. Inventory costs are drastically lowered since conven- tional elements are seldom replaced and since the GCF Fuel Filter element is the same for all engines. 5 . Contrary to popular belief, water is not the primary cause of downtime in a diesel engine ... it is all of the other contaminants combined. Water can be effectively removed with simple water-traps. The element used in GCF’s Fuel Filter not only cleans but “drys” the fuel. Compare any conventional filter element with the ele- ment recommended for GCF’s Fuel Filter. And there the comparison ends. ‘The element recommended for the GCF Fuel Filter is a large roll of Quality paper towels, available at the near- est supermarket.

Keeping the right amount of products available is of ut- most importance to keep customers from turning to other products that did arrive on time. Clean fuel keeps the en- gine purring at peak efficiency with no injector or pump failures. Its CA T 3406 engine also runs on clean oil thru a GCF paper towel oil filter.

Dennb Dauro, owner of this $140,000 shrimp boat, does not worry about where he buys fuel ... he has used paper towel oil and fuel filters for several years. But, when at home, he alwaysfills up at James Murray’s Fuel Dock thru thb bank of 12 GCFModel “B”doub1e-element fuel filters at 48 gpm at 45psi. Dennis likesto kid, “Getting clean fuel from James saves my paper towels on the boat. ’’

When your fleet only fills at a central location, it is often- times much more cost-effective to place the fuel filters at the pump instead of on each individual piece of equipment. Also is outstanding for service trucks delivering your fuel to remote operating locations. A GCF by-pass oil filter on the tractor insures clean oil and long engine life.

BY-PASS FILTMTION All automobiles aie equipped with a full.flow oil filter. Most full-flow filters are only capable of trapping the larger particles that contaminate the engine oil. and they do not remove any water f rom the oil.

Full.flow oil filters are mounted between the oil purnp and the engine parts to be lubricated. Theoretically, all oil being pumped through the engine must first pass through the full-flow filter, thus the name "full flow." However, most full.flow filters have a relief valve to relicve pressure and protect an engine from being starved of oil when oil can't get thi-ougli the filter fast enough. This occurs when the oil is cold or when the lilter is saturated with contaminants. Even in normal operation, a full.flow filter can operate with the relief valve partially open, allowing some oil to pass through it unfiltered. This unfiltered oil is pumped to lubricate critical engine parts. That's why, by itself, a full-flow filter is not the answer to keeping engine oil clean.

The AIr/lS/OIL By-Pass Filtei- Delivers These Important Benefits. . .

Less eng ine wear - Studies conducted by major engine bearing manufacturers have proven that dirt is the major cause of engine wear. By removing even the smallest abrasive particles f rom the engine oil, less wear occurs. Keeping engine oil per- petually clean can more than double engine life.

6 B e t t e r fue l e c o n o m y - Clean oil seals piston rings better for improved compression and reduces friction and drag in the engine. This allows an engine to simply "run better" and achieve the max imum fuel economy it was engineered to deliver.

Keeps engines c lean - When the engine oil is kept clean, the internal workings of an engine stay clean. A clean engine will always outperform a dirty engine. Improved power, smoother operation, and better idle and response are more typical f rom a clean engine.

e Reduc:ed oil c o n s u m p t i o n - Dirty oil promotes clogging of the oil passages in the piston ring and pistons. These passages are designed to carry excess oil back to the crankcase. When they are clogged, the oil cannot drain back and some of it is burned during combustion. Dirty oil also increases the rate of wear on bearings. cylinders, pistons and rings, further contributing to ex- cessive oil consumption.

e Reduced fue l d i i u t i o n - Because dirty oil won't allow piston rings to seal properly, residual fuel will drain into the crankcase, causing excessive fuel dilution. Fuel dilution of engine oil can be reduced up to 50% by merely keeping the oil clean.

Q Reduced r u s t a n d co r ros ion - All engines are susceptible to water formed by condensation. When water is left in an engine oil. it combines with combustion by-products to form acid, attack- ing rnetal surfaces and causing premature wear. The AMSjOlL By-Pass Filter's unique, patented filtering media actually filters out and holds water. , . over one pint of water.. . so that acid forma. tion is minimized. if not eliminated altogether.

E x t e n d e d o i l l i fe - By removing sub-rnicronic c o n t a r i i nants f rom the engine oil, the AMSIOIL Bypass Filter will afford the potential for greatly extended engine oil service life. Additives in clean oil last sutjstantially longer, and periodic top-off of the oil to replace normal oil consumption and filter element chdriges continues lo ii1trotluc.e fresh additives into the engine oil, llrus maintaining engine oil tliat can remain analytically clean 101 ex- tended periods, even indefinitely.

Solvent Filtration

Assume: Two 50 gallon solvent tanks = 100 gallons Solvent cost @ $4.00 per gallon Filtration unit cost @ $2400 (Gulf Coast Model) Other costs are negligible

Without Filtration Solvent changed every two months = 6 changes per year

6 X (100 gallons) = 600 gallons of solvent used per year

(600 gallons) X ($4.00 per gallon) = $2400 per year solvent costs

With Filtration Solvent changed every six months = 2 changes per year

2 X (100 gallons) = 200 gallons of solvent used per year

(240 gallons) X ($4.00 per gallon) = $800 per year solvent costs

Cost differential = $2400 - $800 = $1600 per year

Payback period of filtration unit = 18 months

The Gulf Coast filtration unit consists of two filter cannisters, a pump, and is mounted on a small cart. The filter elements for the unit filter to 0.7 microns and are on the order of $1.00 per element. Gulf Coast filters are marketed by Cash's Filtration Technology of Anchorage (see appendix 4 for address and phone number).

This shop reduces its waste disposal costs and reduces its heating costs by burning used oil and solvents in a space heater. The used oils and solvents are first run through the filter unit to clean them for burning. The shop is currently burning used oil that was stockpiled from years past. This space heater (a Black Gold model, cost = $ 8 5 0 0 ) burns 1.5 gallons of used oil per hour. While using this space heater, the thermostat for the shop is set at 50 degrees and the space heater thermostat is set at 70 . The oil burned saves money both by replacing fuel oil and by avoiding used oil disposal costs. used solvents in the unit under the assumption that it is a conditionally exempt small quantity generator (see appendix 1). Black Gold space heaters are marketed by Gleason Research of Eagle River and NuEra Technologies of Anchorage (see appendix 4 for addresses and phone numbers).

lubrication oils.

By installing bypass filters on engines, the grit and water can be effectively removed from the oil. The removal of these two major contaminants of oil can greatly reduce engine abrasion and acid buildup, the two major factors leading to the breakdown and replacement of lube oil. Bypass filters typically cost between $100 and $400, with the replacement filter cartridges running between $1.00 and $40.00. Anchorage vendors of bypass filter systems include Cash's Filtration Technology, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants, DSR Companies, and Sunlok Energy Systems (see appendix 4 for addresses and phone numbers).

The additives in the oil should be replenished regularly. This can be done by using additive packages or by using high quality makeup oil.

The quality of the oil should then be monitored by an analysis laboratory. can also be used to monitor the wear on the engine. Labs are auailable that will provide analyses of viscosity, metals content, total base number (a measure of the oils ability to neutralize acid), % water, % fuel, % antifreeze, sulfur content, additive strength, and other indicators of oil quality and engine wear. A complete oil test generally runs from $15 to $50. The filter vendors mentioned above can arrange oil testing, Herguth Petroleum Laboratories, Inc. of Vallejo California also analyzes oil (see appendix 4 for address and phone number).

These oil tests indicate the quality of the oil and

Testing programs can be used alone to determine the quality of oils and the maximum amount of time allowable between oil changes. This information can be used to extend the period of time needed between oil changes.

D. Waste Reduction Opportunities

This shop should continue with the waste reduction measures it has already undertaken. and the plans to recycle washwater should be explored further.

Other waste reduction measures this shop could pursue include the following:

The ultrafiltration of oil and solvents

Solvents

1. Keep the lid closed on the solvent tank - research has indicated that this practice can reduce solvent losses by 40% (EPA, 1977). This practice also limits worker exposure to

~ solvent vapors.

2. Use dirty solvent as a pre-soak for a clean solvent bath.

3 . Mechanically clean parts before placing them in the solvent bath.

Used Oil The life of oils can be extended by employing a system of ultra- filtration, additive package addition, and oil quality monitoring.

By installing bypass oil filters on engines, the grit and water can be effectively removed from the oil. The removal of these two major contaminants of oil can greatly reduce engine abrasion and acid buildup, the two major factors leading to the need to change out oil.

The spent additives in the oil can be replenished by using additive packages or using high quality make-up oil.

The quality of the oil can then be monitored by an analysis laboratory. Labs are available that will provide oil sample analysis of viscosity, metals content, %water, %fuel, sulfur content, total base number, additive strength, and other indicators of oil quality and engine wear. The vendors of filtration systems can arrange oil analysis. Anchorage vendors o€ bypass filter systems include Cash's Filtration Technology, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants, DSR Companies, and SunLok Energy Systems (see appendix 4 for phone numbers and addresses).

Testing programs can be used alone to determine the quality of oils and thereby extend the changeout life, which will result in less overall oil consumption.

Transmission oils and hydraulic oils can be filtered using bypass filters, or can be filtered using mobile roll up filters rather than being changed out.

By using a system of filtration, substantial cost savings can be realized on oil. Filters typically cost between $200 and $400, and replaceable filter elements between $1.00 and $40.00. samples cost between $25 and $50. After the initial costs of implementing the system, the annual cost of this type of system is roughly:

O i l

Filtration System (4 bypass filter elements) X $20 = $80

(1 oil test) X $40 = $40

Total Cost = $120 per vehicle

Regular Oil Changes The annual cost of regular oil changes is roughly:

(-4 o i l changes)X(7 Gallons)X($12 per gallon) = $336 per vehicle

A system of bypass oil filtration can save substantially on oil costs.

Transmission and hydraulic oils need not be continuously filtered. One shop in remote Alaska uses a portable filter to filter the transmission and hydraulic oils of 50 pieces of equipment once a year, and thereby avoids changing the oils out. Cost calculations for this type of filtration are shown below:

Transmission Oil Filtration

Assume: Synthetic Oil at $12 per gallon 150 gallons of oil per machine (Pumper, cement, and acid trucks) 20 machines in the fleet Oil changed once per year Filter costs $2400 Filter Elements cost $4.00 1 element used per year 4 gallons of oil lost per filtration

Regular yearly oil changes (150 gallons) X ($12 per gallon) = $1800 per machine per year (150 gallons) X ($1 disposal cost per gallon) = $150

Total cost per machine per year = $1950

Filtration (4 gallons) X ($12 per gallon) = $48 (1 element) X ($4 per element) = $4

Total yearly cost per machine = $52

Cost Differential

$1950 - $52 = $1898 a year per machine

($1898) X 20 machines = $37,960

The cost of the filter is quickly recovered. This type of portable filter is available in Anchorage from Cash's Filtration Technology (See appendix 4 for phone number and address).

Used oil can also be burned on-site. Should the oil be on specification (see appendix l), the oil can be mixed 20:l with diesel fuel and burned in diesel engines. The oil can be stockpiled and used in the summer to avoid the risk of cold weather gelling. covered area and protected from spills by a berm and impermeable Liner. to ensure this practice does not void any warranties.

Both on specification oil and off specification oil can be burned in small space heaters (see appendix 1). These units cost in the range of $6200 (not including shipping and labor). It is
