Masthead: this is located in the left third meaning that it is directly shown to the audience immediately- even when it is still situated on the stand. Moreover, it keeps to its typical colours show that the audience can personally identify with the codes and conventions that come with the magazine; they see the Masthead and know automatically that the magazine relates to their wants and needs. Flash: this is also located in the left third and directly below the masthead- meaning that it will be noticed second to the masthead, thus showing that placement on a magazine is critical in attracting an audience. Furthermore, by it being coloured white it contrasts the masthead’s bright colour, again making it stand out. Also,

the text font/size/style appeals to the target audience because it’s loud, vibrant and contains features relevant to magazine genre. Main/Central image: again, this is located on the left third meaning that it will be seen directly when on the shelf- attracting the target audience almost certainly. By her face and hair being such contrasting colours it makes each of these features stand out more on the front cover and therefore allows the audience to relate to her and her background in music. The reader knows exactly what this issue of the magazine features through the main image so it is important that it relates to the issue in an appropriate way- genre, style, appeal. Skyline: this adds additional information to the front cover and could allow the reader to be attracted by more than one feature of the magazine- thus making it more appealing to them and more likely that they buy it. It is made to stand out by the use of bright colour on the contrasting dark foreground and this helps the attention fix on it- as it’s not in the left third it may not be seen as easily by the reader’s eye. Lead Article: the lead article relates completely to the main image featured in the magazine and offers additional information, that isn’t directly found within the image, about the story being featured. By placing the lead article in a large font it makes it stand out to the reader and attracts their eye, also therefore attracting their eye to the right third. Pull Quote: a pull quote allows some interaction between the cover lines and main image and allows the reader to get an idea of what the artist is going to be talking about and their attitude. This pull quote features the word “new” which will appeal to an audience as everyone wants to know the newest news, newest style ect. Cover lines: these highlight other stories that are in this issue of the magazine- thus allowing the audience to relate more to the magazine. By making them white on a dark background is allows attention to be drawn to them- which may be difficult on some magazines as the cover lines aren’t always posted on the left third; where the eye is automatically drawn to. Moreover, they also make the magazine seen as though it has a lot of interesting

information within it- appealing to those who really want to find out the “411” of the music world.

Masthead: as seen in the previous magazine, it is located in the left third- so that it is directly seen and noticed by the target audience. This masthead contrast the last, as it doesn’t scream out at the audience like the red, bold NME does. This may be because it is not wanted to be the main focus of the magazine- perhaps because the magazine feels established enough that it doesn’t have to rely on the masthead to attract attention. It has a more modern feel about it as it is curved and circular. Lead Article: this font contrasts that of the masthead and therefore makes it stand out to the audience. The font is more edgy and loud and also, by putting the more important or topical words in bright orange it draws the eye directly towards them. The use of the exclamation mark within the lead article makes the story seen more of a main focus of the magazine and should be noticed for this. Skyline: this skyline tells the audience directly if this magazine is the magazine for them and again, it is coloured in the bright orange font so that it stands out and attracts attention. Moreover, like the lead article, it has also been put in the louder, bolder font- showing that aspects of this magazine being noticed is important. Within the skyline, the genre of the magazine is told to the audience meaning that the target audience know exactly if this magazine if for them or not. Free Gift: this is located on the left third showing that it is an important part of the magazine and that it is supposed to be noticed early on by the eye. It is located in the stereotypical area for a free gift showing how MIXMAG follows certain codes and conventions for a magazine. The colours also contrast the others on the magazine, again adding to how well it will be noticed and recognised. It’s bright, loud, vibrant and large in size- everything needed for it to help attract the target audience to the magazine. Cover Lines: as in NME, they offer additional information to the reader so that they know exactly what the issue is dedicated to. Much like other aspects of the magazine, the most important pieces of information are coloured in orange- showing a flow between the different aspects of the magazines and shows how thought out the imagery

has been. They are located on the right third as they are not as important as the lead article or free gift. Flash: the flash on NME and this one of MIXMAG more or less the same showing that magazine to follow some of the same styling areas even if they are completely different genres. As in NME the flash is located white so that it stands out and by doing this the text if also made to “pop” out of the page because of the colour difference. Main/Central Image: different NME, the lead image is not located on the left third, showing that it may not be the most important aspect of the magazine. Moreover, contrasting NME, the image is more inviting to the audience as though the artist wishes to convey things with you on a more personal level; her eyes look right at the reader is a welcoming fashion. The way she is dressed also relates her directly to the magazine and allows the target audience to personally identify with her way of dress.
