CARLTONRIVERINAFOOTBALLLEAGUE

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW BY ALLAN HULL

Today's the day! . . . that "one day in September". that the entire football season revolves aro11nd . .. has arrived.

At the recognised headquarters of rile Riverina Foorball League. the Narra11dera Sportsgrou11d , the two very co111rasting clubs. Wagga Tigers and Coolamon. will s trive to take our the season 's ultimate goal. . the premiership flag.

/11 what has been a tmely re111arkable turnabout of events. rile Wagga Tigers will enter the premiership decider as war111 fa vourites afrer finishing with the woo den spoon just twelve m onths ago .

The Tigers climb back 10 the rop has been borh well pla1111ed and drama filled.

After recruiting well and appoi111i11g rhe s1ro11g 11nd rugged Herman Van De Beek as captai11lcoach , Wagga has heen forced to play the majoriry of rhe season wirh Van De Beek as a spectaror, after suffering a serio11s injury in the very firsr game.

Van De Beek's raw brand of foorhall has certainly been felt by his oppo11en1s in latrer games in rhe second ro1111d wirh rhe big Tiger leader rucki11g and busting up the packs with his brand of 110 frills, straight ah ead. style of play.

His ruck work and general play roday are certain ro go a long way i11 deciding the outcome of rhe march .

Wagga Tigers showed that they could run as well as wke rhe big grabs when they accou111ed for Ganmai11-Gro11g Gro11g-Muro11g in the major semi-final, and they will again look ro dashing winger, Ray ·Flex' Colvin . to give them p lenty of drive from his flank.

011 the other side of the ground the Tigers will promote th e speedy and talemed Amhony Croke, while the sheer s1re11g1h of cenrrema11, Russell Pieper, completes a very strong cemre-line rrio for the black and golds.

Teenage full-forward sensation, Michael Walker, rogether with the brilliant but conrroversial Mark Hoffet, will be looked ro to put the poims on the board.

In defence, rhe popular Tigers best and fairest win ner rhis season, Barry Ough, reads the play well, and although lacking in speed is a more rhan confident overhead marker.

Ray Carroll at fullback is an experienced defender who bucks his judge111e111 wirh confidence ro run the ball out of rhe danger zone.

While the Tigers have been dubbed in some quarters as a team of 'imports'. such can not be claimed of Coolamon wilo have done so well this season under rhe coaciling of local product, Neil Pleming.

Pleming and his 'mates' have confounded many critics already during rhe finals series wirh th eir progress 1l1t1s far, and they may well be up 10 rhe task of clearing rodays final hurdle.

Plemi11g, hard working cenrre John Chamberlain . running back flanker Andrew Pallison, and wingers Steve Pauison and Kevin Williams are the Grasshoppers ball workers.

With Ian Buchanan in fo rm ar fullback and Breu Allen electrify ing across rhe half forward line, the Coolamon side roo can find plenry ro enthuse abow for rodays encounter.

Tile formu la of botil sides looks reasonably well disclosed when ir comes down 10 match plans.

Wagga will look ro their srrength and marking abiliry aro1111d the ground ro ser up a potenrial win, while Coolamon will rely 011 their running players. coupled wirh rhe fana rical desire for success that small town support can som etimes bring. 10 see players perform well above their normal potential.

The 'fearless' predictions: Not too many 'experts' are giving rhe GRASSHOPPERS much hope, bur they haven't let me down yet in the final series, so I'll stay with the green and whites ro pull off the surprise win ... through nothing more rhen desire and determination.

In rhe 2nd XVJ//s, the WAGGA TIGERS look absolute 'certainties ' to defeat Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong, with 'ho w far?' being the only possible ralking point p rior to the game.

The Under 19s should see the young GANMAINGRONG GRONG-MATONG LIONS make amends for last seasons narrow loss in the Grand Final by finishing too well for the Turvey Park Bulldogs .

Allow me to close by wishing all players, officials and supporters a great day of football, victory to the best reams on the day, and controlled celebrating by the worthy winners . .. GOOD LUCK!

For all your baby requirernenrs .

TOOHEYSFARRERFOOTBALLLEAGUE

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Today we see the fina l games for the 1985

Tooheys Farrer Football season. A very good season of football has been

experienced with the climax last week of M .C.U. 's great win in Division One grand final. A grand final that had everything and one that will really be remembered for years.

Today Whitton and Junee-Kapooka do battle for Division Two supremacy . The thrill of Division Two footba ll has been the upsets during the season and as we enter today 's grand final there could be no certainty.

To both clubs I wish you all the best for an injury free game.

Whitton Club must be congratulated as today they also have their Reserve Grade side playing Cootamundra in the grand final.

EDITORIAL Season 1985 is all but finished. Last week , the

strong M. C. U. Club at last broke through for th eir first senior premiership since 1972, after being runners-up for the previous four years. It was a well-earned win over a solid opponent in Co/lin gullie-Ashmont, the 1984 premiers.

Congratulations are extended to M. C. U. on not only their Senior win , bw also th eir Ul9s Premiership - the third in four years. Temora Reserves prevented M. C. U. from a clean sweep when they defeated the more favoured Goanna combination. A fine effort Temora!

League Best and Fairest winners, Phil Reid (Temora) , Lew San brook (M.C. U.) , Son Nguyen (S. W. T.) in Division One and Martin Simpson and Bobby Thompson, both of Whiuon, in Division Two are also to be congratulated on their wonderful seasons.

Today, is th e much talked about 'day of days' for th e Division Two competition, when reigning premiers Junee-Kapooka are opposed to minor premiers Whiuon in th e Seniors , and Cootamun dra play Whiuon in the Reserves.

A warm welcome is extended to th ose patrons and guest visiting today 's grand final. It is hoped that you will witness two good games of injury-free football, and may everyone enjoy a safe journey back to their respective homes.

Congrawlations to th e League Execwive, President John Yates , vice-presidents Lance Seaman and Trevor Urquart , Secrewry Phil LePetit and Treasurer Malcolm Leve// on another successful year.

Th e Farrer League looks fo rward to another successful season in 1986.

Congratulations to medal winners and leading goa lkickers for your personal achievements during the 1985 season.

On behalf of the League I wish to thank the R .A.F.C. Management and ground staff again for the faci lities and ground that has been provided for the League. The knockers of Maher Oval will soon have to bury their heads as the ground played exceptionally well last week for Division One grand final.

To all clubs in the League I thank you for your co-operation during the year , and to all players today . . the best of luck.

JOHN YATES President

Farrer Football L eague

President's Message We ll , he re we a re, play ing in th e 1985

R .F. L. Grand Fina l. Whi le congratu lating Neil a nd his squad o n maki ng it , I also congra tulate the 2nd XYJII s , led by Peter Bartholo mew (Lanham Meda l win ner) , on the ir making the Fi rst Semi a nd also the U 19s fo r the ir ga llant effort during the yea r - well done.

I would also li ke to thank my Committee , Lad ies Auxil ary. suppo rters and Coola mo n community as a whole, as without this suppo rt and contribution during the yea r it wou ld be difficult to run a small club such as ours.

During the yea r we had a couple of down periods, but we picked o urselves up and go t the fighting spirit going again , which this club is no ted fo r , a nd found o ur way to the ultim ate - in a G ra nd Final .. . and hopefull y winning it.

I would like to co ngratulate Wagga Tige rs for being our opposition for today, I think they have prove n they are worthy oppo ne nts. Also the other fin alists sides who are participating, may you all have injury free and hard fought games , and may the best team win .

Lastly I would thank the League and all the othe r clubs fo r a good year, with ple nty of opposition wh ich make this League o ne of the strongest a nd respected Leagues in N.S .W .

Thank you. TREVOR TIPPING

Hoppers Club Notes The Prelim final . for those wh o we re lucky enough to

Two teams, wit h tremendo us rivalry and. underneath . great respect for each ot he r. played a ga me of exhilarati ng. spectacul a r. exhausting. laugh but scrupulously fa ir football. Coolamon won simply because we ha ppe ned to be in fro nt whe n the sire n sounded . Intense . proud ri valry bu ill up over decades between small towns is what makes football in this a rea great.

Picking the best playe rs was ha rder then searching blindfo ld in a totally darkened room a t midnight fo r a black cat which isn ' t there. b ut it was unive rsally agreed that Ian Buchanan was magnificent in defence. H e stood undaunted and unbowed like a mode rn day A chilles · as impeni t rable as Fort Knox and as solid as the Pyramids. Pat (Mmmm ) Danihe r bounced around like a ge iger counter in a pl ulo ni um shop and was a tigerish contributor in the last qua rter while Mr . Pho togenic, Brett Allen zapped arou nd the forward line like an e lectrifiec' gazelle.

These notes would be remiss witho ut mentio ning two othe r highlights. Fi rs tly Stumpy . leaping th rough the s tratosphe re for a se nsat io nal grab and descending with the ball in his claws. Snow on his bald patch and a severe case of vertigo. T he other was Tangles Pleming in t he last seconds of the ga me pulling o ff the best smoother since Richard Il l in the Tower of London to stop a kick that "would 've bisected the goals."

To say that the Lions were glorio us in defeat sounds pa tronising - but they were and none more so than the coach Mark Fraser. whose m agnificent spo rtsmanship afte r the game will not be forgotten by the Coolamon players and 'Supporters.

We have sus tained a Bernbo urgh like run. coming from nowhe re to secu re a place in the Grand Final th is year.
