The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), based in Berkeley, CA, is one of the world’s premiere centers for research in the mathematical sciences. Founded as an independent institute in 1982, MSRI advances mathematical research through conferences attended annually by over 1700 mathematical scientists, and sponsors outreach activities for K-12 education and math-related events for the public.

Alan Alda is an Emmy award-winning actor, writer and director. Among his many roles, he starred as Hawkeye Pierce in the TV series M*A*S*H and as Senator Arnold Vinick on the West Wing. Alda also hosted the PBS series Scientific American Frontiers for eleven years.
