After School ActivitiesBy Alyssa Walker

These days, children seem to grow up far too fast. With all the social media and intense video games, some kids sadly do not have the chance to experience the childhood we remember. When your child comes home from school, try to have other activities for them to engage in rather than sitting by a computer or TV screen.

What interests your child? Do they enjoy acting, singing or any sports? If they have a passion for any of these, find an after school club they can join where they can pursue what they love. This will also give your child the opportunity to be around children who share the same interests as they do, something they may not find on the school playground.

If after school camps do not interest you or your child, open their horizons to activities at home that extend beyond multimedia. Take out old board games, lay out art supplies and encourage them to run around outside when the sun is out. Exercise is important for children as well as adults and luckily, kids can get a good workout without them realizing it. Have a bike readily accessible for them to ride and make sure to have a helmet nearby! If you have a dog, make a routine of walking the dog with your child after school.

Learning that reading can be fun is also important for kids to learn at a young age. One day, take your child to your local book store and allow them to choose books that interest them. They may be used to having books already chosen for them at school. Set up a nice and inviting reading area in your house and you’ll be pleasantly surprised when your child wanders over there by themselves.

Children will have fun in laughing and munching on peanut butter and jelly tea sandwiches, turkey and cheese tea sandwiches, ham and cheese tea sandwiches and petite fuers for dessert.

San Antonio Children’s MuseumHave the ultimate themed birthday party! Choose from Under the Sea, Jungle Adventure and A Bug’s Eye View themes and dress for the part. funky lava lamp or watch pop rockets fly through the air. The Children’s Museum makes birthday parties easy and can provide you with everything you need for a hassle free day.

San Antonio Botanical GardenDoes your child love dinosaurs? If they have dinosaur figurines decorating their room, host their party at the Botanical Garden during the Dinosaur Stampede exhibit! The Bilingual Child AcademyBy Alyssa Walker

In a city like San Antonio, being bilingual is extremely beneficial. Teaching your child a second language at a young age will not only expand their knowledge of different cultures, but open new job opportunities for them in the future. Individuals who are bilingual are more likely to be hired, especially if the company specializes in customer service. Learning a new language comes easier for children, therefore the best time to teach them is now.

Your child will be exposed to Spanish at a young age whether it’s in the classroom or on the playground. Naturally, being unable to understand what another child is saying can be uncomfortable, but if they begin to learn the language, they will be able to communicate on a whole different level.

The Bilingual Child Academy is a dual language preschool and after school language program for children 18 months to preschool. They offer full and part-time premier care. BCA is not a day care. They teach small classes on a weekly basis. During these classes, your child will be immersed in two different cultures- English and Spanish. Along with language enrichment programs, BCA holds workshops for adults and children and offer language related educational services. Children who attend BCA before starting school will already have experienced culture diversity and be more socially and emotionally ready for their school years. Lunch hour will consist of healthy, kid friendly foods as well as new menu items from around the world so your child will become culturally diverse in both the language and cuisine. For more information and to sign up for classes, please visit www.bilingualchildacademy.com

Acting Up Creative Drama Academy provides after school care and teaches children about social interaction. What is creative drama? Creative Drama is “dramatic improvisation designed by a leader for the benefit of the participants”. To help build confidence, children will partake in theatre games, improvisation, storytelling, pantomime, diction and vocal projection.

Acting Up’s after school program picks students up from area elementary schools and transports them to the facility. Once they arrive, kids will have snack time and then the creative drama classes will begin. After each class there will be time to begin on homework.

As well as the after school program, Acting Up has additional classes during the week, birthday parties, summer camps and holiday workshops. Birthday parties last for two and a half hours and every birthday boy or girl can choose their own theme!

Homework Board You’ll need:

Wooden chalkboardYellow paintSchool themed scrapbook paper3 wooden clothespinsWhite craft glueScissors

Instructions:

1. Paint the frame of the chalkboard yellow and set aside to dry.

2. Cut scrapbook paper to fit on the clothespins and glue in place.

3. Glue the clothespins to the bottom section of the chalkboard frame.

4. Decorate the top of the frame with school themed shapes cut from

the scrapbook paper.

Lunch Money Holder You’ll need:

Toddler-size sockTacky glueWooden hand (available at many craft and fabric stores)Magnetic strip with adhesive back2 or 3 pennies

Instructions:

1. Take the sock and cut off the foot of the sock across the heel, as shown, and discard it. Then hem the cut edge of the sock tube by turning it under and gluing it in place.

2. Apply more glue inside the hem and sandwich the wrist of the wooden hand between the front and back of the tube. Firmly press the layers together, making sure the sock is sealed all the way across.

3. Cut 2 pieces of magnetic strip to fit across the inside of the sock’s open end. Remove the backing and, making sure the strips are aligned, stick them to the fabric. These will function as a clasp to keep the money inside.

4. For the finishing touch, glue the pennies to the palm of the wooden hand.

New BraunfelsFirst Tooth Care

When should you first take your child to the dentist? The Children’s Dental Ark, located in New Braunfels, recommends the “First Dental Exam by the First Birthday”. Learning about caring for your child’s teeth from the beginning will prevent future problems. Caring for your child’s new teeth is different than how you care for your own teeth and the dentist will teach you everything you need to know at your first exam including what food and drinks are best to consume.

During your first dentist visit, fluoride will be applied to the teeth and a dental x-ray will be performed if needed. Take time to ask the dentist questions. Important questions include, what can I do to help my child prevent cavities? What is the best way to care for my child’s teeth? Is my child’s diet healthy for their teeth?

Children’s Dental Ark specializes in dentistry for infants and children. They are dedicated to making sure your child’s dentist appointments go as easy as possible for everyone in the family. For the healthiest teeth, have your child, as well as yourself, see a dentist every six months.
