Well, we are smack-dab in the middle of our busy season down at ABYC, and on any given day you will find that the Club is bustling with activity. From the Junior Summer Sailing Program, to Regatta weekends, to Twillight Dinners on the patio, there sure is

a lot to see and do at the Club. To help tackle the demands that go along with this action-packedsummer, we have hired a new Galley staff member, and I’d like to take this opportunity to brieflyintroduce her.

Our new Galley employee, Nicole Jenkins, comes to us with 2 years of experience workingas a cook at the locally-famous Nugget Pub & Grill on CSULB campus. Nicole was born andraised in Long Beach and graduated from Cabrillo High School. She is the eldest of 4 children

(with two brothers and one sister), and her family means everything to her. As she likes to put it, “I’m related to my bestfriends.” Nicole also works at a local golf course as a cook, which is great for her, because cooking is something she reallyenjoys. She is a hard worker, and doesn’t mind putting in the long hours now, as her goal is to save up so she can relax andtravel in the future. Nicole is a friendly and sweet girl, and if you see her down in the Galley, please be sure to say hello andintroduce yourself. You’ll be able to recognize her as the new girl with a big smile on her face. Let’s give her a big ABYCwelcome!

July went ripping by us faster than Wild Oates on port tack at the start of the TransPac race!Ed Spotsky, Robin Townsend, Pat McCormick, Trish and I were the course marshalsfor the TransPac start line, and the world famous Mark Townsend was on the committee

boat- what a kick that was. Big left hand shift two minutes before the start had the pin endheavily favored, which resulted in a big stack up; then everyone immediately tacked onto portand then reached (with light rain and lightning) to the west end of Catalina. What a sight to see!If you were one of the spectator boats that we had to swoosh away, thanks for cooperating itgets a little crazy on the start line. We have a number of ABYC members in this year’s race andI am sure we will get a full report for next month’s Sou’wester. Here is a list of our members that

sailed across the pacific: John Sangmeister and Greg Weeger on OEX, Scott Atwood, Gave Ferramola and Sam Heck onPARANOIA, Doug Jorgensen on PICANTE (unfortunately they have dropped out due to a structure issue, but all are ok),Matt Rustigian and Todd Wheatley on PIPE DREAM, Mike Van Dyke, Mike Pentecost and Jeff Messano (father of Juniormember Victoria) on RIO 100, Merry Cheers (spouse of member Sam Heck) on SLEEPER, Dan Milefchik on VARUNA,Sam Bell and family on Westward. We wish you all good luck and Godspeed.

On July 3rd this year, the “Big Bang on the Bay” fireworks show was amazing. It seems to grow with more fireworksthan the previous year. The firemen did not participate this year, so it was a private ABYC event and WOW what fun it was. Thanks go out to the SAC committee for organizing the food, decorations and the live entertainment. Our incredible staffalways makes it look easy throwing a party for 300 of your closest friends. Yes, we had about 300 members takingadvantage of the special evening. Next year, we are going to organize a raft up (similar to Opening Day) so if you want tobring over your boat make sure you get your reservation into the office early… I have a feeling that next year will be biggerand better!

Club ABYC on July 10th had a special feel this timearound…THANKS to Trish and Chelsea for throwingmy 50th SURPRISE birthday party! Yes I was totallysurprised and I had a blast, thank you to everyone thatattended to make this special day truly memorable.Felling fresh the next morning (well almost after hittingthe sack at 1am), Mark and Robin Townsend and Trishand I headed down to Newport to compete in theCommodores Challenge contested in Harbor 20’s. Ido some of my best work with missing a few brain cells and some howmanaged to hold it together long enough for us to win the CommodoresChallenge! Last won by SC Jeff and Chas Merrill in 2011! Next time you aredown at the club you need to see the perpetual trophy from 1950, it is prettyimpressive! Now it is up to Latham to defend!

The Fourth of July regatta went off without a hitch this year under theleadership of Michael Kramer acting as Regatta Chair. We ended up with a

total of 137 entries with the majority being sabots and opti’s. Thank you to the PRO’s Martyn Bookwalter, Paul Anctil andMike Bauman and chief judge Steve Kuritz. Saturday night BBQ was another hit serving up traditional American BBQchicken, ribs and all the fixings.

Next time you are on your boat going out the channel you are (hopefully) going to notice the new “Alamitos BayYacht Club” sign that is now proudly displayed up on the widows walk. After 89 years, it was time to get some signage upfor some recognition and maybe people will stop asking us the same old question: “Is that a restaurant over there?” I thinkyou are really going to like the new sign.

New Members, New Members and New Members!!! August 15th is our annual new member appreciation partyand clambake. This is a great event to come down and meet the new members and welcome them into the ABYC family.Last year the clam back was such a hit we had to repeat the menu again, so come on down and enjoy the afternoon, we willalso have a boat building contest, we will provide all of the materials you just need to put on your Pete Melvin designer hatand build the boat, sound like fun? Come on down to see first hand. Not to drop any names but last year 2008 StaffCommodore went back for THREE helpings of the clambake, itwas that good!

As of this Sou’wester writing we have just completed ourpractice day for the Special Olympic World Games off of BelmontPier. We called this the “wrinkle day” (too iron out the wrinkles forthe regatta on the first day). We will have a full report for next monthsSou’wester, but all I can say now is this is an amazing event andwe are all very proud to be a part of!

If you haven’t been able down to the club lately you betterhurry up, summer is blowing by and there is ALWAYS somethinggoing on, so keep an eye on your emails and the webpage for themost current info.

July was a busy month at our little slice of paradise! The Fourth of July Regatta saw thelargest fleet of Optimists ever to descend upon our club, they represented 40% of theentries that weekend! The Swift Solo Nationals as well as the Multi-hull regatta were held

just days after, fast boats burning up the course. The first week of August will see 150 Naples sabots, their skippers and parents returning

home to their place of birth for the International Naples Sabot Junior Nationals. Rememberthere is no parking in the yard that week – no leeboard scratches in the auto paint!

And we have done this all without the small hoist – maybe we do not need it. JUSTKIDDING!! Three bids have been received and have been sent back after review, we want tomake sure that we get what we need. The old hoist lasted about 60 years so if we make an error

we will have to live with it well past most of our sailing days. We hope to start the project just after Labor Day and have itfinished prior to Turkey Day!

The Labor Day Regatta and annual Luau are just around the corner as is the end of summer. Join us for theweekend and send out the summer of 2015 with a bang or some sort of drink with fruit and umbrellas in it!

Elections are just around the corner. We average about a 30% turnout I personally would like to see this muchhigher. Remember it is your club and you have a voice!

4th of July Holiday Regatta Our 2015 4th of July Holiday Regatta was a bit tardy this year falling on the July 11-12 weekend. Michael Kramer was our Regatta Chairman representing the hosting Laser

Fleet. I had the privilege to serve as Board Liaison and wish to thank all volunteers who helpedus run the regatta. Our 2014 4th of July Regatta was relatively laid back with 59 boats competing;however our 2015 Regatta drew 139 boats in 13 separate fleets. A major reason for the increasedattendance were the 29 Optimist (Opti) Prams racing on our Ocean course and 26 Green FleetOpti Prams racing on the Bay.

It was quite a sight Saturday morning to see several large, multi-boat Opti and Sabot trailers, along with coach boat trailers, Thistle trailers and Opti sailors seemingly everywhere rigging their

sails and spars. There were long lines at the Galley helping contribute to an excited air of anticipation of racing.Despite the crowds, we had a good team of volunteers; with Bill and Mary Lou Nicolai checking in our volunteers,

Joe & Mary Riddick, Judy Matias, Cindy Heavrin, Patt Anderson and Beth Smith handled pre-registered and on-siteregistered racers, checking the entries with our computer scorer, Jim Morford. Latham Bell, Paul Anctil, Bill Andersonand Michael Kramer watched the gate and helped move trailers into the parking area. George Caddle made sure Patiencewas ready to go while Kevin Brown and Dave Myers equipped the mark set boats. Helping equip the mark set boats whereour crews; Warren Casey, Alan Cunningham, Jim Drury, Susan Lanoue, David Miller, Russell Cole, Latham Bell andDustin Lake. Our Principal Race Officer (PRO) for the Ocean course was Martyn Bookwalter, assisted by Rodion Mazin,Michiyo Connelly, Kevin Brown, Paul Anctil and Kevin Taugher. Down below doing the scoring were; Beth Smith, PattAnderson, Bill Anderson Vernon Brickey, Debby Miller, Kathleen Melvin and your author.

Mike Baumann was PRO for the Bay course with help from; Betty Baumann, Thomas Byrd, Britta Hirsch, CindyHeavrin, Kimberley McBrearty, Holly Davis, Kim Adam and Rob Stropky on the mark-set whaler. Steve Kuritz andLatham handled the Judging and Protest Committee duties.

After racing Saturday, the bar was open on the patio and Chef Rick and ABYC staff set out a delicious selection ofBBQ ribs, chicken, ranch beans, pasta and corn salad as well as plenty of cookies for desert. I doubt anyone went awayhungry!

On Sunday, were joined by; Gary McNulty who watched the gate, Bruce Wasson, Marky & Tom Morel on Patience,Jim Lincoln and Richard Rychlik on the Ocean course, Meredith Madole and Lynn Drury on the Bay course.

Thanks to our volunteers and ABYC staff, we once again conducted the kind of sailboat racing event that keeps ourmembers and guests coming back and competitive racing classes asking ABYC to conduct their major regattas.

logfleet captain’s

My article is going to be short and sweet this month. As always I need to spend a little bit of time on Whaler Luv. In an effort to maintain our fleet most effectively we are implementing a small change to the way club members reserve whalers. If you are a

PRO for twilights or a fleet race, or need a whaler for any other purpose you must notify the clubmanager 48 hours in advance. Please send an e-mail to Tori (and copy the fleet captain) lettingher know what size whaler and when you will need it. Tori will have staff ensure the whaler isready to go at the appropriate time. Please don’t assume that someone will look at the calendarand have the boat ready for your fleet race. Many of the boats will reside on the hard betweenregattas so if you show up unannounced and hope to hop on a whaler you could be disappointed.

The process for major regattas is not changing. Regatta PRO’s should still submit their whaler/equipment requeststo George Caddle no later than the Wednesday before the regatta. George gives a copy of the request to the club manager(for the whalers) and to the port captains (for the race equipment). Staff and the port captains will have the whalers andrace equipment ready to go at the dock the morning of the regatta.

Hopefully members are starting to see the upside to these procedural changes. The boats are cleaner, the seatshave been wiped down, and Erik starts the engines to make sure every boat is running properly before letting a member getin the boat. This new change will help us continue to improve the fleet, and hopefully the volunteer experience.

Now that I have taken care of business I can move on to the fun stuff. The heart of our racing program is in fullswing. The Memorial Day regatta was blessed with perfect weather and a delicious cook-your-own dinner. We even hadsome interesting dancing break-out on the patio. The following weekend is the OCR regatta, with most likely perfectweather. In June we host Senior Sabot Nationals, Lido twilights on every day of the week, an Etchells fleet race, a Viperfleet race, laser twilights, and the Men’s Day regatta / BBQ. We close out the month with one of my favorites, Long BeachRace Week. And all of these regattas will probably have perfect sailing weather. I know you Great Lakes and East Coastsailors will miss slatting offshore in swarms of bugs. I just ask that when you come to ABYC please smile and pretend youare having a good time!

Summer is in full force here at ABYC! Our sailors are on the water every day andworking their way towards their goals. Recently, we sent a team of 12 sailors tothe Junior Olympic Festival in Cabrillo Beach where we walked away with the

overall win in the Radial fleet. That same weekend we hosted our Fourth of JulyRegatta where our sailors brought home numerous awards across the board. ABYCsent a team of 14 to the CFJ nationals in Santa Barbara that was also verysuccessful. Needless to say we have a lot of aspiring young sailors!

Looking ahead, our sailors will be present in large numbers at the SabotNationals, and Optimist West Coast Championships. Our coaches are workinghard to make sure our sailors are ready for action.

The 2015 US Junior Olympic Sailing Festival was held at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro. The event was heldfrom Friday July 10th to Sunday July 12th.The venue is widely known as “Hurricane Gulch” mainly for its big breeze. The weekend was no shortage of that. Every day started out with a consistent 6-7 knots and slowly built into the high

teens. The wind direction was also consistent throughout the weekend with minimal big shifts. The waves were the best partof the weekend. Once the breeze picked up, you could expect waves that could almost carry you down the racecourse. Anddon’t forget the current, it played a major role in the upwinds, causing you to get closer to the shore to best use the currentrelief.

For me, the weekend was tough and grueling on the body. With Friday having 5 races for us, it was hard not to startgiving up by the fifth race, but I pushed through. I knew that if I worked hard, I would reach the finish quicker. I had competitionthough, and they didn’t make it easy. Caden Sheiblauer from Santa Barbara was the hardest competitor to beat. He is veryphysical in the boat and does not hold back. He is driven by determination to win, and that will always make a formidableopponent.

Caden ended up finishing right behind me in second place, and I couldn’t say it was an easy battle the last day.Caden and I are good friends off the water, but we both know what it takes to win. We duked it out all day, putting all ourstrength into hiking upwind and keeping the boat flat while also saving enough energy to sail fast downwind. With the longcourses that Mr. Segerblom set for us, saving energy was not easy, but I pushed through to win the regatta.

Hi my name is Will Mueller and I would like to tell you about my first Opti Champ Fleet regatta!I have been sailing sabots for a couple of years, then in the Fall, I tried the Opti. My coach at the time was Liz andshe coached me in my first few green fleet races. It was really fun because we started to travel to race our Optis.

We did regattas in places like Ventura, King Harbor and Morro Bay. I’ve been practicing a lot and have been doing summersailing with coach Javier. Javier takes us out to the ocean every day. He teaches us how to power and de-power our sails, how to have a good start in a big fleet and how to right my boat when it capsizes. Just recently Javier said I was ready togo to champ fleet.

I was really excited! My first regatta in the champ fleet was a bit difficult but I was able to get though it and not comein last place. It was blowing 22 knots and there were lots of waves. I was not scared because I have been taking sailinglessons in that wind almost every day. There were so many boats all trying to get a good start. In the first race, I capsizedbut I got my boat upright by myself, kept sailing and finished the race. In the champ fleet, you eat lunch on your boat whilehanging on to the coach boat. There isn’t really any time to relax. I was really tired at the end of the regatta!

Overall my first champ fleet race turned out to be awesome. I loved the strong winds and big waves. I had lots offun and I can’t wait to get out there and do it again!

Thank you for reading to my article! Will Mueller

quiz #13racing rules

Definition, FinishRule 28, Sailing the CourseRule 32, Shortening or Abandoning after the Start

All rounding marks are to be left to port. Due to insufficient wind the race committee shortens the course by displayingflag S (with two sounds) from a staff on a committee boat anchored near the windward mark.

The committee sets the finishing line at the weather mark as shown in the diagram. At the time that flag S is displayed, the boats are between the last rounding mark and weather mark finishing line. Yellow and Blue approach the finishing line, see flag S and sail the courses shown in the diagram.

Yellow is on port and rounds the mark to port. Blue is on starboard leaves the mark to starboard. Yellow and Bluecross the finish at exactly the same time from opposite directions.

How should the Race Committee record the finishing order?

Friday July 17th, 18th and 19th ABYC hosted two events with the Senior Sabot fleet and the Juniors and the host fleets. The Multihull Regatta, concurrently with the Musto Skiff and Swift Solo Class Championships.

For those of you are not familiar with a Musto Skiff or Swift Solo I will do my best to explain. Both boats are singlehanded. The Musto Skiff is a cat rig with a spinnaker. The Swift Solo is a sloop rig with a spinnaker. As if that is not enoughboth are trapeze boats.

This brought out some very exciting sailing. In any breeze above five knots the boats were capable of getting upto planning speed. During the weekend we had conditions that ranged from about 5 knots to about 15 knots.

The conditions Friday were very windy. There were many capsizes, however the sailors that braved it out hadsome very good rides. Saturday the multihulls joined usand the conditions were much more moderate. Howeverwe all had to leave the course due to rain and thunder andlightening. Sunday the conditions were also very moderatefor the sailors.

There were five Formula Multihulls led by DanDelave and Eilieen Haubi from ABYC. Nine Hobie 16Multihulls participated. Jeff Newsome and MichelleEatough from ABYC finished first overall. Tony Kraussand Debra Mancini finished second overall. David Sparkuhland Karen Rodgers of MBYC finished third overall.

In the Musto Skiff class Pieter Versavel finishedfirst overall for the weekend. The Swift Solo class was ledby Phillip Ryan from the Denver Sailing Association andfollowed by Robert Harper.

Thank you again to all of the volunteers and ourPRO Steve Kuritz for making this happen.

Paige O’Dell of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club was the first to finish Thursday in the Sabot C3 class and was awarded theJessica Uniack Memorial Beach to Bay Race perpetual trophy for first place in the largest class in this year’s 28thannual event hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club, sponsored by Bellingham Marine and supported by Sailing Pro

Shop, Gladstone’s and Ganahl Lumber. More than 180 young sailors ranging in age from seven to 17 were greeted by an overcast morning with virtually no

breeze—contrary to local weather forecasts—and waited for nearly two-and-a-half hours before the wind finally began tobuild and they were able to start racing.

Because of the time delay and the—still building—light breeze, Principal Race Officer Jess Gerry chose to shortenthe usual five nautical mile course to about half that distance so that the sailors could get to LBYC for the pre-planned post-race party and ceremonies.

“My ultimate enjoyment, Gerry said, “is seeing all ofthese sailors, some of which are seven or eight year olds whobegan sailing this summer, racing in this event and seeing howproud their parents were.”

The Naples Sabot made up the majority of the fleetwhich also included Optimists, Club FJs, Lasers and theMicorKat catamarans, new to this year’s race. Most of theseclasses sail in bays and occasionally on the ocean, but this isthe only junior sailing event of the year where the eight-foot-long Sabots ever venture out on the ocean.

In addition to O’Dell’s first place finish in the Sabot C3class, other first place finishers were Charley Snyder, AlamitosBay Yacht Club, in the Sabot C1; Jacob Malonzo, LBYC, inSabot C2; Jason Winn, Huntington Harbor Yacht Club, in SabotA; Bobby Little, ABYC, in Sabot B; Richard Rychlik, Jr., CabrilloBeach Yacht Club, in the Optimist class; Jessica McJones andcrew Gavin McJones, California Yacht Club in the CFJ class;Ryan Schack, ABYC, in the Laser class; Peter Sangmeister, LBYC/ABYC, in the Laser Radial class and Luke Melvin,ABYC, in the new MicroKat class.

The event is named for Jessica Uniack, a tireless volunteer and supporter of junior sailing who died tragically in1994. Her husband Bill and sons Billy and Alex carry on her work with this event that began in 1988 and was renamed in herhonor in 1995.

A former Junior Sailing Director at LBYC, Alex pitched in both on and off the water by setting race marks, coachingsailors and helping to hand out the hardware at the trophy ceremony.

Better than most, he understands the organization and support that is required to hold a junior sailing race of thissize and the positive impact it can have on a young sailor and their family.

“Thank you to Bellingham Marine for providing the T-shirts,” Uniack said, “and also to Sailing Pro Shop, Gladstone’sand Ganahl Lumber for providing donations for the raffle prizes. Thanks to Jess and his crew for doing an outstanding job, especially considering all the curve balls.

“Thank you to all the participating clubs. I know it’s a long day, but it’s all worth it in the end. Special thanks to DanaPoint and Cal yacht clubs for making the trek. It’s a really long day for those folks.

“Most importantly I wanted to thank the parent volunteers. My mom was constantly volunteering and helped makeour sailing experiences and events like this great. It’s the parents that do the driving, the hauling and everything else thatgoes into the day. And it’s the parents who create these events. Thanks for choosing to support this event. These are yourclubs, your programs and events. Positively contributing to them only makes it better for everyone.”

Everyone is invited - even if you don’t own a boat -come enjoy a cool day on the ABYC beach!Plan on arriving by 3pm. Rebecca Moffett is our Regatta Chair this year. Please RSVP to Rebecca Moffett – [email protected] so we know how

many people will be attending. We hope to get more racing in this year, the annual dues and regatta entry

fee is $12.00. You can enter in as many divisions as you qualify based on age andgender - see flyer and details on the ABYC.org website calendar. http://www.abyc.org/event.cfm?id=2836

If you did not pay your $12.00 dues last year please catch up with us thisyear.

If you want to race, but don’t have a boat, don’t worry, we can get you on thestart line (we need the money according to Mandi Dufort, fleet treasurer!).

If you have a boat and aren’t able to attend please give me a call so we canmake arrangements to “borrow” your boat and get more people involved.

If you have a boat, but are done racing PB12’s, please get in touch so wecan recycle your boat to another racer. You can drop it off at the ABYC office withSheila or Tori.

Note: We have a clear waiting list, let Rebecca know if you would like to addyour name to take over ownership of a recycled boat. Remember, when you gotyour boat you agreed to race it, those who didn’t make it last year just know we missyou, so come on down and enjoy the fun.

Thanks everyone, break out your soggy water shoes and (appropriate) bather’s ready for a wade good time. We will have a cook your own (BBQ) with chips and salad. Feel free to bring a pot luck dessert or snack. Our Annualmeeting and awards banquet will take place on the ABYC patio after the racing is completed. Bring a cooler, towel, beach chair and come have fun!

The course is shortened at the weather mark, the mark becomes a finishing mark. Rule 32.2(a) permits the racecommittee to position the vessel displaying flag S at either end of the finishing line. A boat must cross the line inaccordance with the definition Finish, even if in so doing she leaves that mark on the side opposite the side on which

she would have been required to leave it if the course had not been shortened.Blue is given a finish position. Yellow is scored DNFMark Townsend

I am very sad to inform you that Clifton Mathias passed away on Saturday July 18th. Clif joined ABYC in 1974 and during that time he was very active in the Lido 14 fleet, was the Sabot Fleet Captainfor 2 years and also serving as the Keel Boat Fleet Captain as well.Clif was chairman of the couple cruise to Catalina and also served on the Board of Directors. During his last

years here with us Clif was iconic for wearing his USC jacket when volunteering for regattas working the drive in gatehanding out parking passes.

Clif loved ABYC and will be missed dearly.Details of the service will be released by the family at a later date.Chuck Clay

KEEL BOAT FLEET ON WATCH

Friday, September 11, is the next Fleet Meeting. As this will be our first meeting since our summer hiatus it’s always a great time to see old friends and hear what everyone was up to. This meeting is also the firstof the Fleet’s 2015-2016 year and we will have an outline of the coming Fleet year’s schedule that will

hopefully generate some new things to do. We will meet in the patio/quarterdeck for a bar b cue. As always, you bring a small hors d’ oeuvre and entrée to barbecue and your booze. The Fleet will provide a green salad, a potato

salad and plates etc. One last magical bit of information, dues are due! Bring $10, check, (made out to Mary MargaretCaddle), or cash and give to Margaret or Judy Mathias.

Clif Mathias passed away peacefully July 18 and will be missed by all who knew him.Clif was instrumental for many great things in the Keel Boat Fleet including summer cruises and setting up the reciprocalagreements with other yacht clubs. And who can forget the faithful guard on gate duty at regattas with that great smile. These were among his many contributions to ABYC as well as the Keel Boat Fleet. Maggie and I counted Clif among ouroldest and cherished friends.

See you at the barbeque.George C.

Wet Wednesday’s are in full swing and the first series is complete with Rubber Dog sailed by Keith Ives and Chuck Stevens taking 1st overall. Patty Nash, Mark Barnard, & Nick Odegard aboard Waka Waka pulled out 2nd, and Jeff Ives & Phil Soma on Bravura took 3rd. Jerry Montgomery

sailing Heatwave nabbed 4th, followed by Ron & Mike Wood on Lickety Split. If you haven’t been out on aWednesday yet, the evenings have been beautiful, with warm steady breezes and smooth seas. The

second series is underway, but it’s not too late to get out there and enjoy some mid-week twilight sailing.July 11th brought the 4th of July Regatta. Five boats made it out to sail off Seal Beach in very lumpy and choppy

conditions. Powerboats and lack of wind also made it a bit sloppy. The beautiful Long Beach Harbor inside the breakwaterkept beckoning off in the distance, but apparently the Opti’s, who we shared a race course, like to sail in open waters.During the course of the day, while watching Opti’s bounce along, one couldn’t help but wonder if we are trying to make thekids love or hate sailing? Anyway, after day 1, Bravura was in the lead, followed by Odie and Hot Pink. Breakfast Club andPCH were also in the thick of things. Day 2 had Odie, sailed by Freddie and Fred Stevens taking first overall. John Ellis,Jennifer & Steve Kuritz sailing Hot Pink grabbed second, followed by John Merchant and Rob Fuller on Breakfast Club.In the end, good racing and good times!

Friday evening July 17th the Cal 20’s tried something different in Team Racing. Billy Uniack brought this idea tothe fleet as it is very popular in many locations such as Newport. Six boats competed to make it 3 against 3. The teamswere: Rubber Dog (Keith Ives/Chuck Stevens), Waka Waka (PattyNash/ Mark Barnard), & Magic Bus (David Miller/Damon Kunkle) vs.Dragon Fly 42 (Steve George/ Chuck Clay/ Susan), Loryee (DanBates Sr./Dan Bates Jr.) & Bravura (Jeff Ives/Phil Soma). Billy had abrief meeting before sailing to fill us in on the different combinationsof finishes to win, as well as strategies to help your teammates duringthe race. In addition, the race course would be in the bay, trianglestyle, with upwind finish near ‘C’ mark, which was also our weathermark. Once we finished the first race, everyone couldn’t wait to startanother. In the end, 4 races were completed in about an hour and ahalf, and we all headed in for the Burger Bash. Talk back on the patiowas lively as a great time was had by all. Fleet Captain Steve Georgehad one bottle of rum to give out as a trophy, and that went to MagicBus’ David Miller & Damon Kunkle. Thanks to Tori and Chef Rickfor feeding us, Billy for teaching and being race committee, Steve forpicking up the bottle of rum, and Martin Bookwalter for manning the barge and doing the starts. This is a racing format thatwe will for sure try again as it was a tremendous success.

The Cal 20 Nationals, to be held at Tacoma Yacht Club in mid-August, is approaching quickly. ABYC boatsputting new wheels, lights, bearing, etc on trailers and getting ready for the trek north are: Dragon Fly 42, Lickity Split (withthe former championship crew of Ron Wood & Vann Wilson getting back together), Rubber Dog, Bravura, and Maniacal.Maniacal will be sailed by Mike Van Dyke and Damon Kunkle, with Dave and Sue Crocket pulling the boat behind theirmotor home and offering shore support. Todd Smith & Cathy Black-Smith will also be flying up to join the fun!

lockervideoA large group of ABYC members volunteered for the Special Olympics World Games last week.Everyone, except for Mark Townsend, was given a lime green shirt as part of our uniform. Mark, being the PRO on Patience, was wearing purple. Bill Stump, from Cal YC, quickly nicknamed himBarney. The name stuck for the week and Bill made this presentation to Mark on Friday.
