This out-of-this-world opportunity was made possible by the Gilder Lehrman Hamilton Education Program. American History students completed a document based unit and had to create a performance based project at the conclusion of the unit in order to earn their ticket. Our day at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC was packed full of activity with a morning student showcase, followed by a Q & A with the cast and crew from Hamilton, and then we were treated to a special afternoon matinee of Hamilton. We were also lucky enough to have three of our very own (Daisy Santiago, Anahy Martinez Carbajal, Lizbeth Cruz Hilario) chosen to perform at the morning student showcase on the stage/set. These ladies had to submit a video of their project in order to be considered for the student showcase.

Shout Out to South Mebane Elementary Ashley & Dean Bruton, SME parents

My son Matthew Currier was admitted to UNC PICU Wednesday morning 11/7/18. His teacher Rachel Harper of South Mebane Elementary found out and sent me an email asking how he was doing and letting me know she and his classmates were thinking about him.

We were in PICU most of the day and I received an email asking if Ms. Harper and Caren Simon could come visit him. I said of course he would love to see ya’ll.

These teachers went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. The moment they both walked into his room, Matthew’s face lit up and he smiled so big!

Please recognize these 2 teachers. They truly are AMAZING! Thank you!

Shout Out from South Graham Elementary KerrieAnn Brown,

School Social Worker

Shout Out from ABSS Career & Technical Education Liz Vaden,

Special Populations Coordinator

On Wednesday, November 14th, ABSS Career & Technical Education (CTE) hosted the State Employees’ Credit Union to provide the “Reality of Money” to students who are currently enrolled in Personal Finance and Accounting at Cummings, Eastern, Graham, Ray Street Academy, Western and Williams High schools (Southern will participate in the Spring). This simulation provides students an opportunity to make real-world financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation and other monthly expenses as they transition into young adults with financial responsibilities. Teachers left with some great follow- up lesson ideas reinforcing financial literacy. Thank you to the community and school volunteers who graciously gave of their time to assist students with this event. It would not happen without them!

Check out some more pictures on our ABSS Career & Technical Education Facebook page or on twitter with #ABSSCTE!

Shout Out from Elon Elementary (the new Elon Elementary) On Friday, November 16, a topping out celebration was held on the campus of the new Elon Elementary School at 730 Walker Road, Elon. A topping out celebration is a centuries old tradition that signifies good fortune for those who construct buildings and for the residents who will enjoy the building. It signifies prosperity and good luck. An evergreen tree or branches are placed atop a new building—a tradition dating back to ancient Egypt (2700 B.C.), continuing through the Dark Ages, and still prevalent today.

Elon Elementary Student Council officers and current fifth graders hosted the event and introduced special guest speakers, including Dr. Connie Book, President of Elon University, Mrs. Allison Gant, chairman of the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education, Town of Elon Mayor Pro Tem Ron Klepcyk, Ken Grube, Regional Vice President of Samet Corporation and Elon Elementary principal Jack Davern.

The Elon Student Council members are pictured at left:
