LIVING IT UP IN CARMELWe know why people have chosen this area in which to settle, but it has always fascinated me how people came to this town – some by choice, some by accident because of a family matter or even a car breakdown while traveling, some to escape to a more temperate climate. Most everyone is an expert on the towns they live in regard-ing the best resources for local information such as where to get the best half-price appetizers on a Monday night and where they can dine with their favorite 4-legged companion and even where and what time to park to avoid those awful parking tickets we accumulate. Despite how we came to our place of residence – our community becomes part of our DNA. How I came to this piece of Heaven is quite a long story....it started when I was about 8 years old. Somehow, even as a child, I sensed the spirituality and draw of this Peninsula that artists and writers and connoisseurs of life discovered in the last century. I noted, even then, that I would live here “someday”!! Through-out my life and in to adulthood, I came here on a regular basis to eat and shop , getting a parking ticket each time, but that did not stop me. Then 20+ years ago, a course I was taking required we create what our perfect day would look like 5 years from then (where we would be and what we would be doing). Amongst other things, the vision I created noted that I was living in Carmel (I lived in Morgan Hill at the time); close to my office (an office that I had not yet created); worked with my husband (he worked for another company up North); had 6 grandchildren (I had none at the time); etc. Shortly after submitting this “picture of a perfect day” a client of mine made an unsolicited offer on our home in Morgan Hill that was not even for sale....... because he fell in love with it. That started the ball rolling and within 2 years this “perfect day” vision became a reality. I was suddenly here living my life exactly as I had pictured it. Pretty awesome! How perfect to also be able to enjoy the multitude of special events that occur on a yearly basis that we used to drive here to attend. Now they are in our backyard.
One of the many events that have drawn us here for many years is the Concourse d’Elegance which is August 15-19 this year and has expanded to events as early as the 12th. My abso-lute favorite is the Carmel Concourse on the Avenue in it’s 6th year. This year it is on August 14th all day long. There will be more than 150 multi-marque vehicles ranging from the 1940’s to 1973 as well as Porche’s and Ferrari’s from the beginning through 1989. Sixteen blocks of the downtown will be closed to traffic and filled with these fabulous collector cars that are an incredible mix of foreign and domestic. It is freely open to the public and is a favorite of all of the locals as well as visitors from around the world. The nostalgic atmosphere is relax-ing where you can just wander all day while enjoying the shops, galleries and restaurants....casual, low key and total fun!!!
