Responsibility of Pastors
God’s Pioneer
A. J. Tomlinson—1865-1943
This Is Not the Falling Away Time Described by Paul
WE MUST GET BACK THE LOST MEMBERS AND KEEP THEM
Someone has said that the life of a pastor is filled with sunshine and shadows. That is, he must always appear sunny andpleasant even if he does carry heartaches and cares. And indeed, he has the care of souls–never dying souls. It is his dutyto keep them, feed them, bless them, and give account of them.
The Scripture deals quite roughly with unfaithful pastors. God is displeased when pastors become unruly and act and talkor preach contrary to what is best for the flock. A few verses of Scripture may be necessary to show that this statement istrue.
“Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! Saith the LORD. Therefore thus saith theLORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, andhave not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:1,2).
These verses certainly show that the pastors that scatter and drive away, instead of gathering in more, will fall intotrouble sooner or later. And this is the time for gathering together instead of a time of falling away. The falling awaytime that Paul mentions commenced in the year 25 A. D. But now is the time for getting together and pulling togetherand staying together. The Scriptures are full of teaching to show my statement is true. We must declare war againstbacksliding and keep the sheep when we get them. The General Assembly has already instituted the proper plan to keepthem and we must do more toward putting it into operation. And the pastors are largely responsible for the functioning ofthe plan.
A pastor is a shepherd. I have feared sometimes that some pastors are not as careful about taking care of their flocks, who have souls to be saved or eternally lost, as shepherds have been in taking care of their sheep that have no hell to shunor heaven to gain. The eastern custom, as I have been informed through reading and otherwise, is to count the sheepevery day so the shepherd may know, without the shadow of a doubt, that all of his sheep are safe. But where are thepastors, even our own beloved and trustworthy pastor, that count their members even once a month and undertake tolocate and pray with every one of them? Where is the pastor that checks upon his congregation every Sunday morning tosee if they are all present, and if any are missing, goes in search for them on Sunday afternoon or even the next week?
(Acts 20:20, 31).
It is my purpose in this message to lay down a line to encourage the pastors, and I want them to know that I feel theirduties and work are of the utmost importance for the strengthening and growth of the Church. This is one of my reasonsfor wanting to encourage and help them if possible to put forth all their strength in taking care of their members. I havebeen made to feel sick many times when hearing of members being turned out of the Church with scarcely any effortmade to reclaim or restore them to favor with God and the other members. I do earnestly hope that kind of business willsoon cease, and that the necessary efforts will be made by the pastors in conjunction with the band leaders to save all thatgo astray, or to prevent their going astray. It is my candid opinion that the greater number of those who went astray andwere turned out of the Church could have been kept or won back and saved if the Scriptures were followed and thepastors had done their duty as carefully as shepherds do their duty in counting and taking care of their sheep.
Pastors are given for the perfecting of the saints and not for their destruction. Indeed, there is a grave responsibility uponthe shepherds that are recognized as pastors. And God has promised to give the right kind of pastors to help in the greatand all-important work of the last days. A few more words from the Bible may be a help right here:
“And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah3:15).
“And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shallthey be lacking, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:4).
These two verses contain much encouragement to our pastors as well as all of us. We have a right to feel that God isgiving the right kind of pastors who will not scatter and drive away the sheep or cripple the lambs as has been done bysome in the past. And is it not encouraging to our pastors to think of God having given them to be pastors, and that theyare God’s gift to the Church? If they can only think of it in that way I feel that the position may seem a little more sacredto them. And when the local churches get to feeling that way about it, the members may feel like walking before the Lordand each other with a greater degree of sacredness.
Let me repeat that this is not the falling away time that Paul described. This is not the time for driving away, scatteringor losing any of our members. I feel we have been losing too many. We must quit this kind of doing. We must get backall the lost members and keep them. To let them go away now is contrary to God’s plan. It is gathering time now. Nowis the time to gather in those that have been driven away and turned out (Ezekiel 34:16; 2 Thessalonians 2:1).
I tell you, I am enthused about this. We must fulfil our part of the prophecy and program. And again let me say, andemphasize it strongly, this is the gathering in time—into the Church of God. Now is the time to gather in and then keepthem and perfect them–get them ready for the return of our Lord. No more going away after we get them, but hold themfast. There may be some extreme cases that will not fall under this rule, but not many when the doctrine is laid downcorrectly and all ministers do their full duty and act with wisdom and love. Preaching is not all there is for pastors to do. Their duties and work are of the utmost importance for the growth and strength of the Church. And great care should betaken in this selection of pastors for the incoming year.
I feel that no pastor should be accepted and approved by the State Overseer till he pledges or has already proven hisloyalty to the Assembly teachings and rulings. The pastor is to see that all the auxiliaries are organized and kept in fairworking order. He should also see that the treasurer makes the monthly reports accurately and promptly. He should alsobe required to consent to making religious visits to all of his members who live in reasonable distance, and to write lettersof encouragement occasionally to those he cannot visit. When these visits are made he should read the Bible and praywith and for them in their homes. And it is also his duty, with the assistance of his band leaders, to hunt up all the straysand keep them when found. He should not limit his visits to the members only, but should also extend his visitations tooutsiders for the purpose of getting them interested, saved, and in the Church.
When a pastor does his full duty in all these respects there is scarcely any doubt about his being well supported.
(This is a sermon by our former General Overseer, A. J. Tomlinson, complied in the book God’s Pioneer. This book andothers have been reprinted in 2012).
Alton-Connecting Pointe: In
February we had a special
Ladies’ Event with the
Valentine theme of “Complete
Me”. It was an outstanding
evening and the ladies turned a
few things they had been
holding on to over to
G o d . . . a l l o w in g H im to
complete them instead of those
things. James and Jamie
Brockman joined the church
and we had a baby dedication
of Alden Rhett Brockman and
Jude Thomas Murphree. We
h a v e u p d a ted a n d a re
continuing to update the
Engulfed Youth’s room and
the Youth Pastor’s office. We
ask you to pray with us as we
pray for a Youth Pastor. We know as we
pray God is preparing the person/’s he has
for our Engulfed Youth and excitement is
growing as we wait. Pastor Daniel has led us
to a deeper experience and desire to be in
God’s presence and to reach out to others.
We have delved deeper into God’s Word and
as we apply it to our lives, we are growing in
unity and growing spiritually. This growth
has taught us to listen closer to God’s voice.

forward...moving closer... to our Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ.
Calera-Harvest Chapel: Our College Class
had 25 people/students with two families that
had prior commitments. We are off to a
good start. To God be the Glory! We took
in thirteen new members in March and
dedicated three babies also. Some pictures
are below.
Chickasaw: We had a wonderful baby
dedication this month for Jayden Tadlock.
We also enjoyed a Valentine Sweet night.
We always enjoy good Christian fellowship.
Cunningham Bridge: We are still praising
God for all He is doing at Cunningham
Bridge. We are seeing steady growth each
month and having many visitors almost
every week. Sister Amanda Edwards joined
by covenant on February 28 to make ourth
February very blessed. We give GOD the
glory!!
Gadsden-Living Waters: The power of
God is moving in a good way here at
Gadsden. Many are experiencing the
healing power of our Lord. During our
baptismal service this month the Holy Spirit
was poured out on all who participated.
Praise God! Revival has come to Gadsden!
Gordo: The Gordo church enjoyed a
Valentine Banquet with dinner, games and
visitation with everyone present. The
children enjoyed pizza and having fun
playing games. Thanks to Kim Smith for all
of her hard work.
Greenpond: God’s love is the greatest love
of all. Pastor Noe baptized seven in water
and what a beautiful service. We were
honored to have the Gideon Representative
speak to us, their dedication to God and the
printed Word is to be commended. Many
souls are won to the Lord through the
Gideon Ministry. Ladies Day was a great
success with the theme “Ladies After God’s
Own Heart”. Charlene Smith was the
speaker. Fathers/Daughters enjoyed a
wonderful banquet. The fathers and
daughters dedicated themselves to be better
fathers and daughters. The Spirit was so
powerful, it can’t be expressed. The
Seniors enjoyed a trip to the Top O’ The
River in Gadsden. Eighteen enjoyed the
food and fellowship.
God is blessing our
church in a mighty way.
Services are full of His
presence and lives are
being changed. All glory
and praise is given to
God.
Grove Hill: February

Valentine Day with a
banquet given by Sister
Judy Mozingo. We had
great fellowship and a
high attendance.

revival with Evangelist
Bill Easter and took in
five new members.
Jeremy Scott, Meagan
Scott, Zach Isom, Ashanti Isom, and Preston

Haleyville-Pathway: I just want to share
with you what God is doing at Pathway. This
past Sunday there was three saved. One lady
came in the church during prayer service
before morning service started. She began to
weep as soon as she walked in the sanctuary.
I went back to her and she cried that she had
turned away from God and she was ready to
get right with Him. Then after Pastor Mark
preached two more came running to the altar
and gave their hearts to the Lord! Praise the
Lord! I know you have been talking about
prayer, we know that this is what happens
when we pray. (Isaiah 66:8; Psalms 126:6)
Let God be magnified. He is worthy of
Praise. Angie Fell.
Harris Chapel: On February 27 . We heldth
our 4 annual Girl’s Conference with 69 inth
attendance. A meal of salad, pizza and
dessert was served. A time of fun and games
preceded the worship and speaker
presentation. Our theme for the event was
“Limitless Through Christ.” Our guest
speaker was 45 year old Allison Weatherbee.
Allison who was born without arms or legs
certainly did not allow her disabilities to hold
her back. She has earned two Masters
Degrees, owns her own home and works as
the Public Relations Director for Camp
ASCCA. Camp ASCCA is located on Lake
Martin and is open year round for children
and adults with both physical and intellectual
disabilities. Allison was truly an inspiration
to all present.
Leesburg: Children’s Ministries went to one
of our local health care facilities to visit with
the patients and give them gifts. Twelve men
from our church attended the Cherokee
County Men’s Conference and Pastor Tim
Douglas was one of the speakers.

rejoicing over a soul saved. Thank You
Lord.
Pelham: We at Pelham are happy to
welcome a new covenant member, Nancy
Moeller.

Day Lunch at church with pictures and fun
for everyone. This is a picture of Pastor
Caples and the church ladies.
Short Creek: Each 2 Wednesday night, wend
have Family Night. We share a devotion, a
meal and funtime. We celebrated Sister
Green’s birthday on this night. We presented
her with a pretty suit, a basket of Godiva
chocolates and several cards with special
love offerings. She is so very deserving. On
Valentine’s Day, the youth had a banquet at
Pizza Hut in Hueytown. We had our Senior
Luncheon also. We thank the Lord for
several visitors this month. Looks promising
for regular attendants.
Tarrant: Our children’s church enjoyed the
month with celebrating Valentine’s every
Sunday of the month. We had five children’s
workers to attend the Children’s Conference
at Hackleburg, COGOP. We have started
serving supper on Wednesday night before
Bible study, which has proven to be a great
fellowship among all who are able to attend.
Our pastor and husband received valuable
information at the Legal Conference at
Woodland Hills COGOP. We ended the
month by hosting a luncheon for the
Birmingham District Pastors and their Core
Leaders to plan for 2016. May God

CAMPFIRES
Our first CAMPFIRES 2016 was held at
Hackleburg Community Church and what a
kickoff it was. Casting VISION for Holy
Ghost Revival Now!
Some 250 gathered for the service and it
was evident by the Spirit and excitement as
we assembled that this would be an
unforgettable experience.
All ages were represented. Church of God
of Prophecy and church groups not Church
of God of Prophecy. They heard about this
meeting and chose to attend.
REVIVAL was the theme resounded over
and over again in every part of the service.
Simply put......God meant business.....We
meant business.
April 3, We all assembled together once
again at Woodland Hills Church in
Bessemer expecting a move of God and we
were not disappointed. The worship team
took us into the presence of God and then
the sermon challenged each one of us to
move up to the standard of God.
The attendance was good and everyone was
excited to be among their brothers and
sisters of other churches to feast upon God’s
blessings.
Thank you Brother Beck and Team for your
vision and for the urgency placed in our
hearts.
Next Meeting:

Tips ForAbundant
Life
CarolynGuyton
Preparation. If you do your best, then Godwill do the rest. I was taught this principle earlyin life and have depended on it many times. Youknow those times when you are leading an eventat church, teaching your Sunday School class orpreaching your Sunday sermon. Sometimes it allseems to fall into place with ease and other timesnothing seems to be working. When I know Ihave prepared to the best of my ability, I canconfidently depend on God to “do the rest.” Ibelieve the key word here is best. God deservesour very best. Preparation is required in order forus to do our best.
Spiritual communion. Spending regular times ofsincere communion with God will keep us in aplace where we can hear Him speaking to us. Those private moments when no one else is therebut you and your Heavenly Father, just sharing anunderstanding that is only possible between aparent and a child. Taking time to just be withHim. These times, along with the continualconnection of heart throughout each day, ensuresthat we know when He speaks.
Inspired direction. When we have been with theLord regularly, He will give us His inspiration forthe task ahead. In fact, I find that this inspirationoften comes at unexpected times. It is souncomfortable to be up against a deadline for anarticle or a presentation and not yet have theinspiration for it. I have learned to be consistentlyopen to God’s presence and write down theinspiration as He gives it to me – even if it maynot be when it is needed. I love sharing what Iknow God inspired. That is when I am confidentI am giving the best.
Set up. Whether a big event or a weeklypresentation, be as prepared as possible. Take thetime to add that extra prop or research that lastminute thought. Have your space set up andprepared ahead of time so any unexpectedinterruptions will not result in your giving lessthan your best.
Then, go and do your best. God will take it fromthere.
Seek every day for the abundant life that onlycomes from God.
