ALA.ThepurposeofthisHOBYprogramistoteachyouhowtothinknotwhattothink. You

willgetfromlifewhatyouputintoit,andthatappliestoaHOBYprogramtoo.Wewantto

awakeninyouthatmagicgenieofself-esteemsoimportanttoanysuccess. Youarehereat

Unfortunately,averysmallnumberofouryoungpeopleseemtoaractthemostofthenews. Theyareinthepublic

eyebecausetheyhavestolencars,vandalizedschools,createddisturbancesinsomewayrebelledagainstsociety. Thesehead-

line-makersrepresentonlyasmallpartofourteenagepopulaon. Itisafactthat98.7percentofouryoungpeoplearelaw-

abiding,construcvecizens. Thereistoomuchfocusonthenegave. Itis meweaccenttheposivepatthegoodguysand

galsonthebackletthemknowtherearerewardsforbeingresponsiblemembersofthecommunity.

The HOBY Story

About Hugh OBrian

Inthesummerof1958,HughOBrianreceivedtheinvitaonthatwouldchangehislifeforever. Atthe me,OBrianhadalready

madeanameforhimselfasanactorportrayingthelegendarylawmanWya Earpontelevisionandappearinginnumerousfilms

WhenhereceivedacablefromDr.AlbertSchweitzerwelcominghimtoFrenchEquatorialAfricaforavisit,hedidnothesitateto

accept. OBrianhad longadmired theGermandoctor-missionary-theologian-musician and1952NobelPeacePrizewinner,and

withintwoweekshearrivedatDr.SchweitzersremotehospitalcomplexinAfrica. Duringhisvisit,OBrianspenthisdaysassisng

thevolunteersinthehospitalandhisnightswithDr.Schweitzerdiscussingglobalpeaceandworldpolics.Duringtheirdiscussions

Dr.SchweitzertoldOBrianthathefeltThemostimportantthingineducaonistoteachyoungpeopletothinkforthemselves,

whichOBrianwouldneverforget.

Aeraninspiringninedays,OBrianpreparedtoreturntoAmerica. Beforesayinggoodbye,Dr.SchweitzertookOBrianshandand

lookeddeepintohiseyesandasked,Hugh,whatareyougoingtodowiththis?Itwasthesewordscombinedwithhisunforgea

blevisitthatcompelledHughO'BriantoformHughO'BrianYouthLeadership(HOBY). Twoweeksaerreturningfromhis1958visi

toAfrica,OBrianputtogetheraprototypeseminarforyoungleaders.

From1958to1967,leadershipseminarstookplaceinLosAngelesforsophomoresfromCalifornia.In1968thescopeoftheHOBY

programgrewtoincludenaonalandinternaonalparcipantswhichledtotheexpandedweek-longinternaonalleadershipsemi

narcalledtheWorld LeadershipCongress(WLC)heldannually. Inanefforttoincludemorestudentsnaonwide,three-dayand

four-dayHOBYLeadershipSeminarswereinstutedin1977inwhichhighschoolsthroughoutthecountrymaynominateasopho

moretoaendaHOBYseminarintheirstate. WithinfiveshortyearsHOBYwasoperangineverystatewiththehelpofpartne

civicorganizaons.HOBYextendeditsreachedandstartedaone-dayleadershipprogramcalledCommunityLeadershipWorkshops

(CLeWs)in1991.Theseworkshopsnowheldforhighschoolfreshmenallowschoolstoselectmanystudentstoparcipate.Tosecureitscommitmenttolocalcommunies,in1997HOBYbeganLeadershipforService(L4S),whichchallengedHOBYAmbassadors

tovolunteeraminimumof100hours in their community. 2011brought the revitalizaonof the InternaonalToursprogram

whichallowsHOBYAlumnitovisitandexperiencetheculturesofothercountries.And2013isthelaunchof theAdvancedLeader

shipAcademy(ALA),afive-dayprogramcreatedtoprovidehighschooljuniorsandseniorswithanextendedHOBYexperience.

Overfivedecades

later,

HOBY

issllinspiring

young

people

allover

the

world

todevelop

their

leadership

and

crical-thinking

skillstoachievetheirhighestpotenal. Currently,morethan10,000studentsexperienceoneofHOBYsprogramseachyear. Thesepro

gramsareproducedbyover4,000volunteerswithcommunityleaders,businessexecuves,educators,andparentsinvolvedateve

HughOBrianwasbornApril19,1925 inRochester,NewYork.At17,hebecametheyoungestdrill

instructor inMarineCorpshistory,but foundhis truepassionwas acng. OBriangainednaonal

fameandnotorietywithhisportrayaloffronerlawmanWya EarpinTheLifeandTimesofWya

Earp. This top-rated televisionseries ran from1955-1962andmadeOBriananovernightsuccess.

Aer the series ended,OBrianwent on to other acngprojects infilm, television, andBroadway

whiledevongtherestofhis metoHOBY.

received

from

hiswork

with

HOBY

are

numerous.

In1983,

the

Naonal

Societyof FundRaisingExecuveshonoredhimwith theirpremieraward foroverallphilanthropic

excellenceasavolunteer, fundraiserandphilanthropist.This is theonly meone individualhasre-

ceived theaward inall three categories. In1989,he received the60thAnnualAmericanEducaon

AwardpresentedbytheAmericanAssociaonofSchoolAdministrators.O'BrianjoinsNormanRock-

well,LyndonJohnson,HelenKeller,WaltDisney,andBobHopeasarecipientofthismostsignificantaward.In2002hereceived

theDisnguishedServiceAward,thehighestawardgivenbytheNaonalAssociaonofSecondarySchoolPrincipals(NASSP).

Andin2006hewasawardedtheExcellenceinEducaonAwardbytheNaonalAssociaonforCollegeAdmissionCounseling

(NACAC).

OBriancurrentlylivesinahilltophomeoverlookingBeverlyHills. Sllacveinhiseighes,hishobbiesincludesailing,swim-

ming,andtennis.

caon,andcreatedHOBY.HOBYexemplifiesthepowerofleadership,combinedwithacommitmenttoservice

andabeliefintheyouthoftheworld.

Webelieveinyouandyourabilitytocreateposivechangeintheworld.TheALAwillprepareyouwiththetools

andskillstoproacvelyexploreandengageinthoughulandsustainablechangeinyourcommunity.Weare

EachAmbassador ischallenged to return tohis/hercommunityandconductat least100

hoursofcommunityserviceintheyearfollowingtheHOBYAdvancedLeadershipAcademy.

unteerism, and to track their success by logging their hours on the HOBY website,

www.hoby.org in theAlumni secon. Since the implementaonofHOBYs Leadershipfor

Serviceprogramin1998,parcipantshaveloggedover2.5Millionvolunteerservicehours.

ThroughHOBYsLeadershipforServiceprogram,Ambassadorsgain the tools,passionand

commitmenttoserveothers.Tohelpyoungpeoplerealizethepersonalandsocialbenefits

of volunteerismand service,HOBYawardseachAmbassadorwho successfully completes

and logs100hoursaspecial recognionpacket,which includesrecognionby theWhite

Idontknowwhatyourdesnywillbe,butonethingIdoknow:theonlyonesamongyouwhowillbe

reallyhappyarethosewhohavesoughtandfoundhowtoserve.

thelocallevel.

TheannualHOBYTrainingInstute,heldinAugust,consistsofintensive,discussion-orientedseminars.Thistrainingconference

educatesandmovatesthevolunteerleadersresponsibleforthequalityofallHOBYprogramsintheupcomingprogramyear.
