AnendowedscholarshipfundhasbeencreatedthisyeartohonorDr.SusanSpooner’smanycontribu@onstoUNC’sCollegeStudentPersonnelAdministra@onProgram(CSPA).Sue,professoremerita,wasalong@meprofessorinwhatwastobecomeHESAL.TheintendeduseoftheFundwillbeprofessionaldevelopmentfordoctoralstudentsintheprogramsotheymayreceivehelpinconduc@ngresearch,aJendingprofessionalconferences,andpresen@ngprogramsatna@onalandregionalprofessionalmee@ngs.AccordingtoBernieKinnick,hercolleague,Sue’spassionfortheprogramandengagementwithstudentswashertrademark.SheoNenbroughtstudentswithhertoconferencesandencouragedthemtopresentindependently.TheSueSpoonerfundwasmadepossiblebysignificantgiNsmadebyDr.JohnSpoonerandmanyformerstudentsandfaculty.Nowthatthefundhasreached$25,000itmustaccruethreeyearsofinterestbeforeHESALcanbeginawarding.Acelebra@onlunchtothankJohnandKevin,Sue’sson,washeldinEstesPark.AJendingwere(l-r),MaJBirnbaum,GinnyKinnick,JeanSchoberMorrell(DeanofStudentemerita),KevinSpooner,JohnSpooner,andBernieKinnick.

Dr.Li:IguessIcouldsayIhaveapersonalinterestinitbecauselawschoolissomethingasanundergraduateIhadconsidered.Andpeoplearoundmehadsaid,“OhIdon’tknowwhatIwanttodo,IguessI’llgotolawschool”.Iwouldsay,“Areyousureyouwanttodothat?Doyouknowwhatlawschoolislike?”Ithinkit’soneofthosethingsthatyoureallyneedtobesureyouwanttodotoputinthe3yearsoflawschool,andoNen@mescompe@@veclassroomenvironments.SummerinternshipsareoNenbasedonyourgradesandclassrank.StudentsoNenhavetogointodebttogotolawschool.

Alexandra:Let’sswitchgears.Whatmadeyoutakethehighereduca@onroute,andwhatmadeyouspecificallyinterestedinfinanceandpolicy?

Dr.Li:IdidmyundergradineconomicsandpsychologyattheUniversityofUtah.Iwasanundergraduateresearchscholar.Iworkedinapsychologylab,whichwasfascina@ngandintroducedmetotheresearchsideofuniversitylife.Iwassomewhatinvolvedasanundergraduate.IwasintheAsianAmericanStudentAssocia@on,andcommunityserviceorganiza@ons.ANerIgraduatedIwenttoworkinprivatesectorfinance.Whichwasawful,honestly[laughs].WhenIgraduatedin2007,themarketwasgreatandeveryonewasge�ngjobs.SowhenIgotafinancialrepresenta@vejob,itwasinteres@ngandIfeltlikeIlearnedalotaboutpersonalfinance.Thentheeconomytankedin2008andIwasge�ngcallsfromclientswholostalotofmoneyintheirinvestmentaccounts.InthatenvironmentIwasn’tabletohelptheclientbecausetherewassomuchoutsideofmycontrol.IcouldtradetheirstocksbutIcouldn’thelpthemifGooglewastakingamajordip.Inhighereduca@on,onadailybasis,youcanactuallymakeadifferenceinastudent’slife.

Iwantedtogobackintohighereduca@onbecauseIreallylikedthecollabora@vesideofitandtheintellectualcomponent.Iforgottomen@onIdidstudyabroadinCambridgeasanundergraduateandIlearnedalot.SoIwenttoworkinStudyAbroad.Atfirst,IwasanassistantandIdidalotofeventplanning,helpingwriteannualreports,someadministra@vestuff.WhenIwaspromotedIwasanadvisorfortheAsiaandPacificregion.Myrolewasadvisingstudentswhowereinterestedinstudyabroad.Whattheirgoalswere,whattheirintentwaswithstudyingabroad.Ididsomemarke@ng,programming,commiJeework.WhenIwasworkingfull-@meIdecidedtogetamastersinHigherEduca@onAdministra@on/StudentAffairsattheUniversityofUtah.That’showIgotinterestedindoingresearchinhighered.IhadthisamazingprofessorDr.NickHillmanwhotaughtafinanceclass,anditbroughttogethermyinterestsinfinanceandhighered.Nickwaskindenoughtobeanexternalmemberofmydisserta@oncommiJee.

Dr.Li:Sure.WhenIwasatUniversityofWashington,IwasanIns@tuteofEduca@onSciences(IES)fellow.Iwasreallyfortunatetohavesomegreatmentorsandadvisorswhogotmeonboardwithresearchandjustbeingsogenerouswiththeir@me.Graduateschoolisdefinitelydifficult,andIhadtoworkhardingradschool.Alotofsta@s@csandcodingdrama[laughs],butit’sallpartofthelearningexperience.Gradschoolcanalsobereallyfunandrewardingifyousurroundyourselfwiththerightpeople.

Alexandra:Whatweresomeofyourbiggesttake-away’sfromyourPhDprogram?Whatwerethingsthatkindofhelpedguideyourresearchinterestsabitmore,andwhatguidedyoutobeafacultymember?

Dr.Li:Iwasadvisedtogotogradschoolfull-@meifyoucanaffordit,whichIwouldadvisetomystudentsifit’sfinanciallyandpersonallyfeasible.Workingwithpeerswasareallybigthing.Ispentalotof@melearningfrommypeers.Andlearningbymyselfindependently,teachingmyselfnewmethodologies.Ifyouthinkaboutit,there’saprofessorwho’sintheclassroomwho’sgivingyouthekeystobesuccessful,butyou’respendingalotof@measastudentworkingonyourowntoo,andthepeernetworksupportwasreallycri@calforthat.
