1 SPRING 2017 HESAL Newsletter HESAL announces the Susan Spooner Graduate Scholarship and Professional Development Endowment An endowed scholarship fund has been created this year to honor Dr. Susan Spooner’s many contribu@ons to UNC’s College Student Personnel Administra@on Program (CSPA). Sue, professor emerita, was a long@me professor in what was to become HESAL. The intended use of the Fund will be professional development for doctoral students in the program so they may receive help in conduc@ng research, aJending professional conferences, and presen@ng programs at na@onal and regional professional mee@ngs. According to Bernie Kinnick, her colleague, Sue’s passion for the program and engagement with students was her trademark. She oNen brought students with her to conferences and encouraged them to present independently. The Sue Spooner fund was made possible by significant giNs made by Dr. John Spooner and many former students and faculty. Now that the fund has reached $25,000 it must accrue three years of interest before HESAL can begin awarding. A celebra@on lunch to thank John and Kevin, Sue’s son, was held in Estes Park. Dr.Li:IdidmyundergradineconomicsandpsychologyattheUniversityofUtah.Iwasanundergraduateresearchscholar.Iworkedinapsychologylab,whichwasfascina@ngandintroducedmetotheresearchsideofuniversitylife.Iwassomewhatinvolvedasanundergraduate.IwasintheAsianAmericanStudentAssocia@on,andcommunityserviceorganiza@ons.ANerIgraduatedIwenttoworkinprivatesectorfinance.Whichwasawful,honestly[laughs].WhenIgraduatedin2007,themarketwasgreatandeveryonewasge�ngjobs.SowhenIgotafinancialrepresenta@vejob,itwasinteres@ngandIfeltlikeIlearnedalotaboutpersonalfinance.Thentheeconomytankedin2008andIwasge�ngcallsfromclientswholostalotofmoneyintheirinvestmentaccounts.InthatenvironmentIwasn’tabletohelptheclientbecausetherewassomuchoutsideofmycontrol.IcouldtradetheirstocksbutIcouldn’thelpthemifGooglewastakingamajordip.Inhighereduca@on,onadailybasis,youcanactuallymakeadifferenceinastudent’slife.

Maintainingyourownstrengthandbeingabletocopewiththepoli@calrealityoftheplacesyou’reworkingatcallsforacertainintelligence.Some@mesIhadtoputidealismasideandrealizethatIamworkingwithhumanbeingswhoarefrail.Youwillneverloseyourrealism,butithastobemeasuredagainsttherealityoftherealworld.
