From page 1 The inaugural Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) Memorial Lecture was graced by His Royal Highness Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the

Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office. His Royal Highness envisioned that these Memorial Lectures will bring together scholars, academicians, prominent intellectuals and speakers to discuss ideas Al-Marhum held most dear. The Welcome Remarks was delivered by His Excellency Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar, Chairman of Board of Directors of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation who accounted the Al-Marhum as a leader, statesman and a nationalist. Dr Hj Zulkarnain, Vice Chancellor Universiti Brunei Darussalam then introduced the speaker His Excellency Dato Laila Utama Lee Kuan Yew who is no stranger to Bruneians. “Al-Marhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien was a Sultan, a pioneering leader, an Islamic Leader, a thinker and a scholar, Brunei’s own laureate and the Architect of Modern Brunei”. Al-Marhum was a prolific writer and produced the Syair Perlembagaan Negeri, Syair Nasihat, Syair Asli Rajang Hari and Rampaian Laila Syair. His Excellency Dato Laila Utama Lee Kuan Yew gave a recount of Al-Marhum’s personal history and touched on how their strong friendship began. Organised by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation and the Universiti Brunei Darussalam, this public lecture aims to promote and expand knowledge as a contribution of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation to the intellectual arena in conjunction with the efforts of institutes of higher learning and other agencies; to promote and nurture knowledge as well as to provide an opportunity to listen and learn from world experts such as former world leaders or heads of Government, academicians, professionals and experts, including Nobel Prize recipients.

All librarians from Government Schools are required to attend a four (4) days Virtual Library System (VILIS) Training at the Resource Room, Level 2, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Library. The training was conducted by the Aliff Technologies with the cooperation from the UBD Library. The training was on the Library Management System which will be implemented in all government schools in Brunei


Darussalam by phases. The system is called Spydus. Expertise traineer came from Australia to

demonstrate on the system itself. Spydus is a web-based application which combines automation of traditional library functions with ongoing innovation to deliver a total information management capability. *Go to page 3

th Brunei Book Fair is an annual event organised each year

by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei in conjunction with the Brunei Darussalam National Day Celebrations. This year it coincides with the Silver Jubilee Celebrations and was held from 28 February to 8 March 2009 at the Indoor Stadium. Some 110

booths are provided. It is participated by 56 vendors with the participation of the ASEAN Publishers Association. The fair was declared open by His Excellency Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Aw Hj Ahmad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The Welcome Remarks was delivered by Ms Hjh Aminah Hj Momin, Acting Director, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei.

Our training started from 19-22 May 2008 and trained by Mrs. Ramira. Topics covered were Enquiry, Circulation, and Cataloguing. In order to use the system every staff and student will be given their own password to start the operation. Enquiry teaches us on searching tools about the collections according to the Quick search, Title, Author or Subject. Through the system we can make a reservation and review on the collections and it will be displayed on My account. This will include the numbers of book borrowed, damage, fines, etc.

In Circulation the librarian is authorised to Register (for new users),

and Resign (for staff and students who leave the school). If the name of the staff and students are already being registered, they can borrow the collections of the library, and make reservations. The librarian can change the

Copy status of the collections if there is any damage or loss and put charges accordingly. The librarian also can write Message for each user to remind or leave notes. The librarian also can check Stock take for collections borrowed or returned daily.

Description of an item can be inputted in the Cataloguing. The cataloguing system can be copied

from any library which also uses Spydus Library Management System and also can be copied from the Library of Congress.

OCLC is offering Web Harvester, a new product that allows libraries and other cultural heritage institutions to capture and add web content to their digital collections managed by OCLC’s CONTENT Digital Collections Management Software. The Web Harvester is integrated into library workflows, allowing library staff to capture content as part of the cataloguing process. The Web Harvester is accessed via the Connexion client, OCLC’s powerful cataloguing service and captures content ranging from single, web-based documents to entire web sites. Once retrieved, users can review the captured web content and add it to a collection managed by OCLC’s CONTENT software, a complete solution for storing, managing and delivering a library’s digital collections to the web. Once in CONTENT web content can be accessed and managed in conjunction with other digital collections. Introduction Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR) is one of five vocational schools established to teach technical programmes suitable for the socio-economic needs of Brunei Darussalam. SVNR provides Craft Level programmes in the fields of Bricklaying and Concreting, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical, Electronics, Furniture and Cabinet Making, Painting and

Decorating, Plumbing and Pipefitting and Hair Dressing. SVNR Library is one of the facilities available at SVNR. It was established at the same time when the building of the Lambak Kanan Vocational School began operation on 8 February 1993 and since 8 August 1997 it is known as the Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School. The Library is located on the ground floor parallel with the entrance leading to the foyer of the Administration Division and close to the Assembly Point.

An Author, Subject and Title Catalogue of the library collection is kept in the library. The catalogue has bibliographical details of each book. The catalogue is to aid patrons in looking for the material they needed by referring to the author, title or subject. There are two types of catalogue. A card catalogue and a computer catalogue using “Professional File”. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
