Imam Ali (a.s) was endowed with all the qualities that make a man great. He was not only great, he was regarded as a superhuman, an ideal man. He was the paragon of virtue. He enjoyed fame for his piety and religious devotions. He was the embodiment of Islamic values. In his love of God and His Messenger, he was second to none. When praying to God, his absorption was so intense that he often lost consciousness. His mind was so sure that he could hold communion with God. He had learned the Holy Qur'an by heart, and he could quote appropriate verses to suit every occasion. He was most truthful and honest. He was most humble. He was simple in his habits. He avoided display and luxury. He lived the life of an ascetic. Even when he was Caliph he lived in an ordinary house. The door of his house remained open to everyone at all times. He was most generous. He was most liberal in giving charity. He always came to the help of those who were distressed and involved in any difficulty. He looked after widows and orphans as if they were members of his own household. He was a warrior, a general, and a man conspicuous for his bravery and valour. Indeed he was braver than any other man in history. He fought hundreds of duels in his lifetime, and in all such encounters his rivals were worsted. In the various battles, he killed a record number of enemies. He was skilful swordsman and his sword never missed its mark. In the various battles that he fought, he never turned his back. In the battle of Uhud, he received so many wounds that the nurses were unable to dress them. He bore the pain with great patience. The people around him misunderstood him, yet he did not lose patience. He was most chivalrous, and forgiving. He would forgive even his worst enemies. He was a great scholar. His book Nahjl al-Balagah is a living proof of his scholarship and erudition. There was a sense of humour about him, and sometimes he said things in a lighter vein to bring home the point he had in mind. He was a master of the simile and metaphor, and when bringing home a point he always illustrated it with appropriate metaphors and similes. He was a great philosopher, and there was great depth in his thoughts which were expressed in his writing. He was known for his wisdom. Most of his wise sayings have attained the dimensions of proverbs. He was a great orator. His sermons were most impressive. He was a master of rhetoric. He is regarded as the father of Islamic learning. He has left a deep mark on Islamic theology. He was the father of Islamic jurisprudence. He was in impartial judge and his famous judgments are the most valuable assets of Islamic jurisprudence. He was a skilful administrator. He introduced numerous reforms. He was an eminent political thinker for his political thought had an air of modernity about it. The greatness of Imam Ali (a.s) as a man is multi-dimensional in character, and after the Holy Prophet (pbuh), he was the greatest Muslim whose memory is honoured by Muslims all over the world.

About the division of the community into factions So now, certainly, Allah did not break the neck of any unruly tyrant in this world except after allowing him time and opportunity and did not join the broken bone of any people (ummah) until He did not inflict calamity and distress upon them. Even less than what sufferings and misfortunes have yet to fall upon you or have already befallen you are enough for giving lessons. Every man with a heart is not intelligent, every ear does not listen and every eye does not see. I wonder, and there is no reason why I should not wonder, about the faults of these groups who have introduced alterations in their religious pleas, who do not move on the footsteps of their Prophet nor follow the actions of the vicegerent. They do not believe in the unknown and do not avoid the evil. They act on the doubts and tread in (the way of) their passions. For them good is whatever they consider good and evil is whatever they consider evil. Their reliance for resolving distresses is on themselves. Their confidence in regard to dubious matters is on their own opinions as if every one of them is the Leader (Imam) of himself. Whatever he has decided himself he considers it to have been taken through reliable sources and strong factors.

When Hazrat Fatima"s (s.a) birth was to take place, the Prophet (pbuh) told Khadija (s.a) "Jabriel has given me the good news that this child which is going to be born is a daughter and all the infallible Imams will be from her generation. Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a) was born on Friday the 20th of Jumad'ul-Sani, the fifth year of Hijrah, when Quraish were busy in constructing the building of Khana-e-Kaabah. Fatima (s.a) was brought up and trained in the family of Prophet (pbuh) and took advantage and share of the knowledge and wisdom of the Prophet (pbuh). She heard the recitation of Quran from the Prophet (pbuh) and leant it by heart, and got busy with the idea and concept of self training and becoming a complete and real human. The love between the father and daughter was not a one-way process; instead, Fatima (s.a) too immensely loved her father like he loved her. When Hazrat Khadija (s.a) died, she was not more than six years of age. After the death of her mother, She always looked after the comfort of her father at home. Fatima (s.a) was such a daughter who constantly and stably followed the footsteps of her father. The streets and Masjid-e-Haram of Mecca were full of those who teased, insulted and tortured the Prophet (pbuh). Whenever her respect worthy father returned home in the injured condition, she would wash the blood off his sacred face and dress his wounds and encouraged him with her sweet conversation. At such times, when her father was a stranger in his own land and among his own people and he was all alone with all the relatives present, and secluded and lonely among all those who spoke the same language he spoke. Moreover, he was all-alone during his struggle and combat against ignorance, idol worshipping and he was carrying the heavy responsibility of preaching on his own. Then it was only and only Fatima (s.a) who pleased and consoled the heart of her father with her sincere love and affection. She by accepting the Prophecy of her father strengthened his hopes. That is the reason why the Prophet (pbuh) used to say, "May your father sacrifice his life upon you" or that he would call her the "mother of her father". Because, she was like a mother for her father.

Bahlool Dana (wisdom) proves the three facts to Abu Hanifa, Belief in Allah (Tawhid) Abu Hanifa was once teaching Islamic beliefs to his students. He was arguing and challenging the validity of some of the statements which had been proclaimed by his teacher sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s). Bahlool Dana happened to be present as well. Abu Hanifa proclaimed that he could not agree with the three understated statements as made by sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) The first one was that "Allah (swt) can never be seen." According to Abu Hanifa it was impossible for a thing to exist and yet be invisible! The second thing that sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) had stated was that "Shaitan (Satan) will be thrown in the inferno of Hell which will scorch him bitterly." Abu Hanifa argued: "How it was possible for fire to hurt 'fire', the fact that Shaitan (Satan) was created from fire itself!" The third statement of sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) was that "Man alone is responsible for his actions and Allah (swt) the most powerful - has nothing to do with his actions." "How is it possible, when Allah (swt) alone guides the destiny of man without Whose will nothing can happen?" This was Abu Hanifa's third challenge. As soon as the speaker, Abu Hanifa, had made these three criticisms against his teacher sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) Bahlool Dana got up, took a piece of brick and aiming at Abu Hanifa, let it go and cracked Abu Hanifa head. Bahlool Dana was caught and taken before the Judge for punishment. In his defense, he pleaded that he had done nothing else except reply to the three criticisms which Abu Hanifa had made against sixth Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s). The Judge asked him to explain as to how and why he chose to reply by hitting and injuring Abu Hanifa. Bahlool said, "This man claims that if Allah (swt) is there, then he must be seen. He is now complaining of pain in his head due to the brick having hurt him. If the pain is definitely there, can he show me where it is? Well! Just as pain can be there without being seen Allah (swt) also exists without being seen." "Secondly, Abu Hanifa says that fire cannot burn fire. It is a fact that man is made out of clay and this brick with which I hit his head is also made out of clay, if clay can inflict pain and hurt clay, why can't fire do the same to fire?" "The third thing Abu Hanifa says is that man is not responsible for his own actions but Allah (swt) does all things. If this is so, then why does he want justice from you and why does he want me to be punished for hurting him? He might as well transfer the punishment to Allah (swt) Who, according to him - is responsible for all the actions of man!" Everyone in the court was stunned at this and Abu Hanifa was dumb founded - having nothing to say. So Bahlool Dana was released without any punishment.

Name: Ali bin Muhammad (a.s.) Mother: Samana al-Maghribiya Kunniyat (Patronymic): Abu al-Hasan al Askari Laqab (Title): Al Hadi Birth: He was born at Madina in the year 212 A.H. Martyrdom: He died of poison in 254 A.H. at Samarrah (Sarmanra) in Iraq and is buried there The thirty three years of imamate of Imam „Ali an-Naqi coincided with the caliphate of the following six caliphs Mu„tasim bin Hârun, Wâthiq bin Mu„tasim, Mutawakkil bin Mu„tasim, Muntasir bin Mutawakkil, Musta„in, and Mu„tazz bin Mutawakkil. Wâthiq bin Mu„tasim had a very promiscuous lifestyle, and had no time to harass the Shi„as and the Imams of the Ahlul Bayt. During his caliphate, a large number of the descendants of Imam „Ali (a.s.) had settled in Samarra, the „Abbasid capital. But the peaceful days for the „Alids and the Imam did not last long. After Wâthiq, his brother Mutawakkil, came to power. Mutawakkil was the most cruel of all the „Abbasid caliphs; he is comparable to Yazîd bin Mu„âwiyah of the Umayyads. Mutawakkil, on the one hand, started promoting the Shâfi„i madhhab in order to distract the masses away from the Ahlul Bayt(a.s.) And, on the other hand, he intensified harassment of the Shi„as. He had such hatred for the Ahlul Bayt that in 236 A.H. he ordered the grave of Imam Husayn (a.s.) be leveled to the ground, and that the surrounding area be transformed into farmlands so that no trace of the grave be left. This all was done to stop the Shi„as from visiting (ziyârat) the graves of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and the other martyrs of Karbala. But when Allâh wishes to protect His “light” no human can do anything about it! The attempt to erase all traces of Imam Hussain‟s grave angered many Muslims; people starting writing anti-„Abbâsid slogans on the walls. Opposition poets also expressed their feelings on this issue. A famous poem against Mutawakkil is given below: By Allâh, if the Umayyids unjustly killed Hussain (a.s), son of the Prophet‟s daughter, his cousins have committed a similar crime for I swear that Hussain‟s (a.s) grave has been erased. It seems that they regret for not participating in the massacre, so they now go after the grave! Mutawakkil enjoyed torturing the followers of the Ahlul Bayt(a.s); even the persons appointed by him as governor in Medina and Mecca were instructed to prevent people from being kind and courteous towards the Ahlul Bayt(a.s). In 234 A.H., Mutawakkil ordered Imam „Ali an-Naqi (a.s.) to be brought from Medina to Samarra where he was placed in a house next to the caliph‟s garrison. The Imam lived under constant surveillance until Mutawakkil was murdered by his own troops at the instigation of his own son, Muntasir. Muntasir bin Mutawakkil reversed the policies of his father towards the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.); he was kind and generous to them; he returned the property of Fadak to the descendants of Imams Hasan and Hussain (a.s.). Unfortunately his caliphate did not last for more than six months when he died in 248 A.H. Musta„in came to power after Muntasir and continued the oppressive policies of his ancestors. But soon his own Turkish troops rebelled against him and pledged allegiance to Mu„tazz bin Mutawakkil whom they rescued from prison. Finally, Musta„in was killed and Mu„tazz become the caliph. Martydom It was during the reign of Mu„tazz bin Mutawakkil that Imam „Ali an-Naqi (a.s) was martyred by poisoning. Mo'taz arranged for the poisoning of Imam through an ambassador and Imam was martyred on Monday 3rd Rajab 254 a.h. nobody except Imam Hassan Askeri (a.s.) was present at the time of his death. he gave his father ghusl and kafan and wept bitterly.

Imam Mohammad Baqir’s (A.S) Imamat: Born in Madina on Ist Rajab 57 Hijri (676 AD), died in Madina on 7th Zilhijja 114 Hijri (733 AD) at the age of 57 years. Period of Imamat 19 years. After the death of the 4th Imam in 95 Hijri, the caliphs in Damascus were so preoccupied with their conquests of foreign lands that they did not have time to worry about the people in Madina, their loyalties or their hostilities. They were also satisfied that the Imams of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) would not divulge in any rebellion against them due to the most peaceful and quite life of the 4th Imam Zainul Abedeen (AS). They left the people of Madina to their activities in some peace. This was the time Imams of Ahlul Bayt were waiting for. Our 5th Imam opened a school to teach Qur'an and Hadith as it was taught by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and Imam Ali (AS). Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (AS) was said to have been high esteemed for his learning and eloquence as well as on account of his noble birth. According to Ibn Khalikan, the Imam (AS) received the title of Baqir (Splitter of knowledge) due to his ample knowledge of Deen and his enthusiasm to teach to other people. Many historians like Yakubi asserts that the Imam (AS) split open knowledge, that is scrutinized it and exam-ined the depths of it so that it can be spread to all people truly and correctly. In his life of respectable and scholarly retirement at Madina, the Imam (AS) was fre-quently called upon to explain particular teachings in regard to Imamate. A synopsis of his teaching in the Ma"athirul-Baqir is given in Cannon Sell"s Ithna Ashariya, an interest-ing part of which may well be quoted, as it shows the emphasis at this early period on the intellectual and spiritual character of the Imamate. Imam Mohammad Baqir’s (AS) Answers to his Companions: A man one day said to the Imam, "Was the Prophet (pbuh) heir to all the knowledge of the Prophets?" He replied, "Yes" then he was asked whether he had inherited it. He said he had. He was then asked if he could raise the dead to life, restore sight to the blind, and cleanse the leper. He said yes, by valor of God, the most high. He therefore put his hand on the blind eyes of a man sit-ting next to him and prayed. The next moment the blind man‟s eyesight was restored. Many more such stories were told by vari-ous historians of the time. The Imam discoursed fully on many topics such as the nature of the soul and Nafs, the nature and attributes of God, the qualities of the Ulemas. He discouraged arguments about the divine nature, saying that it was not possible for men to understand it. One day a mu"tazili leader Wasil bin Ata asked the Imam what the anger of God meant. He said, it was simply punishment, but that this anger was not to be compared to the anger of men. God‟s nature did not change. He defined a Rasul as a prophet who hears the voice of the angel (of revelation) and sees the angel in a bodily form. A Nabi, he said, is a Prophet who also hears the voice of the angel under the same conditions, but does not see him, and the Imam‟s condition is like that of the Nabi but not like that of the Rasul. He said that the Imams were pure and that the Ahlul Bayt (AS) were free from sin.

He was the only man to be titled as the "Second Aaron" by the Prophet (pbuh)

The honour of owning a house which opened into the courtyard of the Prophet's (pbuh)

mosque was reserved for Imam Ali (a.s) alone

He was the first to have the honour of being nominated by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) as his suc-

cessor, testator and vice regent.

... and many, many more

Imam Musa al-Kadhim (a.s) has said, "Rajab is the name of a river in heaven, which is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever fasts in Rajab shall be able to drink from that river". The Holy Prophet (pbuh) has said, "Rajab is the month for seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (swt)". Giving `Sadaqah' (charity/alms) is also highly recommended.
