This lovely redhead was born in Binghamton, N.Y. and grew up in Penn-sylvania. Her father’s family were 5th generation farmers after coming to the U.S. on the Mayflower. He became a CPA right out of college. Her mother was a museum-trained portrait painter who was in high demand for her talents. She and her mother loved to Plein Air paint together. She met her husband when he was hired to sell her parents home after they decided to move to California. The month of May is rich in tradition and offers many opportunities to honor and celebrate our residents, families and team members. Many heartfelt thanks to those who regularly acknowl-edge our hard working Vivante team members for their efforts and service. Please join us for a May Day Festival and exhibit at The Bowers Museum.

Hat season is in full swing and your favorite should be worn to our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Tuesday, May 3rd, and The Kentucky Derby viewing with Mint Juleps on Saturday, May 7th, both held in the Mélange Lobby.

Our Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5th will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Mélange Dining Room. A traditional Mexican buffet with old and new favorites by Chef Jackie will be served. I hope you join us for a margarita, live mariachis and dancing.

Reservations for our Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 8th from 11:30-1:30 should be made with the host station in the Mélange. Please join us in honoring the many special ladies we love and appreciate who have made such a difference in our lives. Our featured resident this month is Catherine Titus. She is a California native, born in Loma Linda in 1933. Catherine is the daughter of a pair of doctors who were devout Adventists. She followed their footsteps in both education and religion. In 1940, at age seven, her father was drafted by the Army to work as an Internist at Walter Reed Hospital. He served for five years without being transferred. During that time, her mother finished her education and OBGYN residency. After his discharge, when Catherine was in the 8th grade, the family moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia. Her parents felt a call to serve the needy, and opened separate practices out of the same office. Four years later the family moved again, this time to Florida to work in an Adventist hospital–the Florida Sanitarium. They were recruited as board certified doctors to help the hospital obtain accreditation.

Within three years, Catherine left Florida to attend Andrews University as a Music Major. She had begun playing the organ in the 6th grade. Within a year, she was good enough to play the organ for the 8th grade graduation. Since then, she has always played the organ in her local churches. She graduated in 1955, while also engaged to a fellow student from North Carolina. She followed him there and began teaching music at an Adventist high school. Catherine ultimately decided to terminate her engagement and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she took a job teaching music theory at Union College. There she met her first husband, Darrell, a former GI and pre-med student. The pair married and moved to Loma Linda, California where Darrell attended med school. Catherine supported the family by teaching music at an elementary school. They had three children together, but in 1974 they decided to divorce.

At the time of her divorce, she was teaching, active in her church–playing the organ, an active member of the PTA at her children’s school, and a member of the local Doctor’s Wives Club. She decided she wanted a more lucrative career and chose to go to law school. She enrolled at Mid Valley College of Law and timed her attendance in class to be on the same schedule as her children’s classes, working hard to raise her children while studying for those classes. She graduated in four years and passed the bar on her first try. Hitting the ground running, she found an immediate clientele with the help of all her friends at church, professional organizations, and a fellow attorney who provided her with an office and extra work from his overflow. She ran a successful civil litigation practice for twenty-two years before retiring in 2001. She also sat as a judge pro-tem at the Glendale Courthouse. She fondly remembers a litigant who told Catherine she was invited to take her case on the TV show, “The People’s Court,” but turned it down because she liked the way Catherine ran her courtroom and the way she patiently explained to the winners and losers the reasons why she came to her decisions.

Catherine shared that her second husband, Edward, was the love of her life. They were introduced by mutual friends in 1986. He was a psychiatrist and the President of the Psychiatric Society. He was an avid hiker and kept himself in top shape by hiking Mount Wilson almost every week. He and his friends, many of whom were doctors, frequently took hiking trips to some of the most challenging peaks in North America, such as Mount McKinley and Mount Whitney. She always went along and hiked as far as she preferred, but never hiked to the summits. She and Edward travelled to foreign countries frequently. Her favorites were in Paris and in Switzerland where they took the Gondola into the Alps and hiked further up the mountains. Catherine said Edward was always courteous about making sure they hiked at her pace. They often skied and even owned a condo in Mammoth for their skiing and hiking adventures. Sadly, Edward discovered he had liver cancer and passed away in 2003, just three months after learning of his diagnosis.

Catherine is extremely proud of her children. Steve is a paralegal who is married to a fellow paralegal and lives in Marina Del Rey. Greg, her second son, is doctor of urology who shares his mother’s love of music with his wife and two daughters who are also musicians. Her daughter Cari got her MBA at University of Redlands and is married to a former high school boyfriend who is also a lawyer. They have four children and live in Costa Mesa – the reason why Catherine selected Vivante. She says her favorite part of Vivante is the class of the people here and the great comradery she finds in our activities, including the choir. She says she feels very secure here and enjoys the level of privacy she is afforded. We’re certainly glad she’s part of what makes such a great class of people here at Vivante! Thanks for being here Catherine!

Maria was born in Jalisco, Mexico and moved to Orange County in 1988 at the age of five. She has three sisters, two brothers and is the middle child. She enjoys having her siblings nearby for visits, although one has moved back to Mexico. She and her father, who works in the recycling business, worked to-gether to support her siblings after her moth-er passed away from cancer when she was 21.

Maria attended school in Santa Ana and hopes to return to become a Medical Assistant in the future. She lives in Anaheim and is married with three children. Her children are Lendy (16), Alexandra (2), and Jesus (5) who enjoys every opportunity to walk with and exercise with his mom. In her free time, Maria enjoys relaxing at home with her family, dancing, going to the movies, running, exercising and time with friends. She just recently celebrated her birthday and is hoping to find a way to take a vacation with all of her family in the very near future.

Prior to coming to Vivante, Maria worked for a therapy company assembling medical equipment. While doing that, she also took work with an agency that provided residential home cleaning services. Maricela, a friend and co-worker referred her to Vivante. Maria tells us that she likes her job, thinks it is a beautiful community and loves that everyone at Vivante, from the staff to the residents, are always smiling. She also says it is exciting to see all the new faces and that “we are now almost full.”

Her co-workers share that Maria is very hard working, dedicated and always friendly to her peers and residents alike. Thank you Maria for providing an inviting, welcoming space to our incoming residents and for helping to maintain our beautiful community. We appreciate all that you do!
