The Right School For Your Child

D ear Parents, caregivers, students and all readers of our Newsletter.

This is our Final Newsletter for Term 2. Once again we achieved much

this term. I would like to thank all the staff of our wonderful school

who ensure that Kimbe International is a safe, educational place so

that our students can thrive and ‘Learn by Doing”. This week, someone who visits

lots of school every year, shared with me how wonderful our students look as they

present themselves in their uniform. They also went on to say how impressed they

were with how the KIS students made them feel very welcome. These kinds of obser-

vations cannot always be measured and formally reported on, but they are certainly

noticed and are a very important component of school and community life.

End of Semester Reports

As we approach the end of first Semester, the teachers have completed various

forms of assessment of the students learning in all learning Areas. Semester One Re-

ports will go home next Thursday 23 June with each student. Thank you to the teach-

ers for the time and effort they have put into the assessment and reporting of each

child’s achievements.

Governor Muthuvel’s Visit to TAFE

Last Tuesday we were privileged to have the WNB Governor, the Hon. Sasindran Muthuvel visit Kimbe Inter-

national School and TAFE. He presented a cheque to support 19 TAFE students with their studies. The Gov-

ernor did a walk around of the facilities of both the school and TAFE was most impressed with the quality of

the classrooms and stated that the “The IT Labs are as good, if not better, than any of the computer labs he

has seen in Port Moresby, including the large tertiary institutions.”

Mosa Saturday Sport

Congratulations to all teams that participated in the Mosa Interschool Sports Competition. A special thanks

to the staff at NBIS and Mosa for their assistance, and NBPOL for the use of their playing fields at Mosa. A

big thank you to all the wonderful parents who helped each week and supported and cheered our teams

Kimbe International

First of all, A BIG THANKYOU to all our good parents and guardians for your continued coopera-

tion and support this first semester at KIS. We are very proud and honored to have your wonder-

ful children in our class for this academic year.

We have been very busy since our last news publication. The children have worked well in and out

of the class room and we have enjoyed every minute of it. Below are some shots of the things

we have been involved in and out of the room since the beginning of this term.

Design Technology assessment— Johanna, Jontel & Lionel evaluating and reporting on their diora-

ma depicting different ecosystems as shelters for living things.

Dr Mark Ero of OPRA explaining the different insect species studied there; the ‘good’ flowers that

support the destruction of insect pests and reinforcing the ‘butterfly metamorphosis’ at the but-

terfly farm.

BLIP shared reading—The Black Cat; posters about pollution prevention and conservation of natu-

ral habitats and some boys proof reading their ‘recounts’ about the Easter holidays.

Pictures from our week 9 school assembly showing Merilyn, Rhodlyn, Maureen, Bati, Nathan,

Gabriella & Asilo talking about DREAMS— DO YOU HAVE A DREAM?

Many THANKS for your cooperation and continued support.

Mr. Aire & Mrs. Peter

Grade 3&4 SIVARAI Welcome to our NEWS Corner for Term 2

.* If you have a DREAM, then

you must LISTEN, PERSIST,

PERSEVERE, be PATIENT and

RESIST negative actions and

thoughts on your way to achiev-

ing your DREAM.

* After consulting our learned

friend Mr. Kavanamur, I demon-

strated a science lesson about

changing MATTER. We plan to be in

the Science Lab next Monday with

our learned scientist so he can

show us, through an experiment,

how salt can be recovered from a

mixture of sand, iron filings and

water in a ‘filtration process’.

We THANK Mr. Kavanamur

for his professional advice

and look forward to his ex-

pert demonstration in the lab

next Monday.

IS THE BUIDING INDUSTRY GOOD OR BAD FOR LIVING THINGS?

GOOD because:

People live in solid permanent homes

People have access to modern schools and hospitals

Many skilled workers earn an income

People who own the resources get an income

BAD because:

Those who earn an income cause many social problems

Traditional landowners lose their land

The environment is polluted by machines and chemicals used in

the building industry

Many natural habitats are lost and plant and animal species be-

WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED TO BUILD SHELTERS?

* The materials used to build shelters depends on what one can find in

the environment nearby or what one could afford to buy. Some examples

of the materials are timber (wood), stone, bricks, steel, iron, glass, plastic

and paper.

WHERE DO PEOPLE BUILD THEIR SHELTERS?

In a place where it can defended easily from

enemies. (Mase)

In a place where there is good fertile land to

grow their own food. (Asilo)

In a place where there is a good supply of

fresh water. (Lincoln)

In a place where animals could be raised for

food. (Lionel)

WHY DO PEOPLE SELECT CERTAIN

LOCATIONS TO BUILD SHELETRS?

To enjoy the view and enjoy fresh cool air on

a mountain top. (Kunaika)

To enjoy the sunshine and cool sea breeze

near a beach. (Jontel)

To have quick access to basic services like

water, health and education. (Magdalene)

To get away from the noise in a busy city and

live in a quiet green forest. (Gregory)

WHY DO PEOPLE BUILD SHELTERS?

To protect themselves from the elements—

the rain, wind, sun, and disease. (Gapan)

To settle down and build a community of

families to live together. (Miriam)

To ‘work’ the land and raise animals and

make gardens for food. (Tom)

What we learnt in our theme studies on SHELTERS

MANY THANKS TO OUR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS FOR

THE WONDERFUL CHILDREN IN OUR CLASS.
