    A%enhotep &&&. As the starting point of the opera, it

    represents the historical %o%ent i%%ediatel* before

    depicts the societ* in which the refor%s of Akhnaten,

    refor%s which appeared so e$tre%e that the* can

    be called revolutionar*, took place. The action ofthe scene centers on the funeral rites of the 8ew

    (The following orchestral section introduces Akhnaten,Eueen T*e and a s%all part* of followers, Aten priests,

    soldiers, etc, of the new order. After surrounding the

    te%ple, Atenists, led b* Akhnaten and Eueen T*e, attack

    it. !ere we see Akhnaten for the first ti%e as the rebel

    he was, venting his hatred if the old order on the A%on

    te%ple. The attack is co%plete, and the roof of the

    te%ple is pulled off as the light of 7the Aten7 pours

    into what once was the 7hol* of holies.7 The attackerssing a vocalise, no words being necessar* here

    S(ene &) A0+na$en and Neer$!$!

    (An orchestral transition prepares the scene, which

    is devoted entirel* to a duet between Akhnaten and

    8efertiti.

    @ith the introduction of the solo tro%bone, the cribebegins reciting a poe%. The first ti%e we hear the poe%

    it is as if addressed to a god.

    @ith the entrance of the strings, the poe% is heard

    again, this ti%e spoken as an e$change between two

    lovers. 3uring this second reading, Akhnaten and

    8efertiti appear. There follows the duet between the

    two, not alone together. The vocal te$t is the sa%e

    poe% sung in 2g*ptian.

    At the end of the duet the %usic returns to the orchestraalone. There is a brief pause, then Akhnaten and8efertiti resu%e singing while behind the% is seen the

    funeral cortege in a later stage of its =ourne*, this ti%e

    ascending on wings of large birds to the heavenl* land

    of Ra
