HONOURABLE CHAIRMAN

On 20th of August 2014 Honorable Chairman of SDMIMD Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade,

Dharmadhikari, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, visited the Institute. During the visit,

Dr. Heggade addressed the faculty members and spent time with a cross section of

students to understand specific learning experiences directly from them.

Orientation program for the new

batch - PGDM 2014-16

The inaugural session of the Induction Program

for the PGDM 2014-16 Batch was held on June

16, 2014. Prof. S. Prabhakar, Secretary, SDM

Educational Trust, inaugurated the program as

per tradition by lighting the lamp. While

addressing the new batch, Prof. Prabhakar

introduced the philosophy and services of

Dharmasthala and the Trust. Dr. N.R.

Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD told the

students about the values they should seek to

gain in the ensuing two years and Prof. S.N.

Prasad delivered the welcome address.

Launch of PGCPME Program

Doctoral Program

The Doctoral Program [Ph.D.] of SDMIMD

conducted by SDM Research Center for

Management Studies (SDM RCMS) is recognized

by University of Mysore, Mysore in the area of

Management Studies. The admission and process

of the doctoral programs is as per the regulations

of the University of Mysore, Mysore

SDMIMD is launching the Postgraduate Certificate

Program in Management and Entrepreneurship

(PGCPME) for graduates. The course effectively

acts as a bridge offering in between the

graduation course and the flagship PGDM of the

Institute. The wide array of subjects in the course

would enable candidates to get a flavour of a

wider array of knowledge that is needed in a

Management program.

EVENTS 2014 FDP on Innovative methods in

Teaching HRM & OB

FDP on Innovative methods in Teaching HRM &

OB- A 2-Day Faculty Development Program

(FDP) on ‘Innovative Methods in Teaching HRM

& OB’ was organized during April 3 & 4, 2014 at

SDMIMD campus. 28 faculty members in the

area of HRM and OB from various management

institutes and universities across the country

participated in the program.

MDP on Statistical Process Control

(SPC) Using Excel

An MDP was conducted on SPC with Excel on

22nd May 2014 and several participants from

industries underwent the hands- on training.

Dr. R. Jagadeesh gave the necessary theoretical

background in the beginning and took the

participants to the hands-on exercises.

MDP on Dimensions of Leadership

MDP on ‘Dimensions of Leadership’ -

Dr. M.R Suresh and Prof. Prasad S.N conducted a

MDP on 'Dimensions of Leadership' for senior

and mid level executives. The day long program,

held on 22 May 2014, covered a variety of

leadership topics including, Conceptual

evaluation of various leadership studies and their

relevance for modern organisations, Importance

of Persuasive Leadership, Grassroots leadership

and Dharmic Leadership in achieving

organizational excellence.

MDP on Finance for Non-Finance

MDP on Finance for Non-Finance Executives -

The Management Development Program (MDP)

on Finance for Non- Finance Executives was

organized at SDMIMD, Mysore on May 23 & 24,

2014. 12 participants attended this workshop.

MDP on

Effective Business Negotiation

MDP on Effective Business Negotiation - A one

day MDP on “Effective Business Negotiation”

was conducted on 23rd May 2014. The

companies which participated in the program

were Meritor, Supreem Pharmaceuticals, SPI,

SysInformation, Rangsons Electronics and

Mitsubishi Diesel Engines Pvt Ltd., The program

emphasized the importance of negotiation skills

in today’s competitive world. The program was

conducted by Dr. H. Gayathri, Dr. Nilanjan

Sengupta and Dr. Mousumi Sengupta.

MDP on Inferential Statistics

using SPSS

A one day Management Development

Programme (MDP) on Inferential Statistics using

SPSS was organized on 31.05.2014, which

attracted research scholars and students from

different institutes from Mysore and SDM, Ujre

respectively. The day-long program looked at

practical aspects of inferential statistics and

enabled the participants to get a hands-on

exposure to SPSS.

Workshop on Avoiding Plagiarism

‘It is considered as the responsibility of institutes

to introduce the concept of and consequences of

plagiarism in academic literature, among

students and to sensitize them about academic

integrity’. To discuss various aspects of this, a

2-Day workshop on avoiding plagiarism was held

on July 3 & 4, 2014 at SDM Institute for

Management Development. The workshop was

coordinated by Dr. M.V. Sunil, Librarian.

Workshop on Research Ideas in

Finance & Accounting

The Workshop on Research Ideas in Finance &

Accounting was held on August 20, 2014. The

workshop was organized as part of

the 3rd International Conference on Emerging

Trends in Finance & Accounting scheduled on

August 22 & 23, 2014 at SDMIMD Mysore. The

discussions equipped the participants with

developing research ideas in Finance &

Accounting in order to develop research

proposals and manuscripts capable of qualifying

for publication. There were 35 participants

representing premier management institutions.

Institute Publications in 2014

The SDMIMD Journal of Management is an

online-cum-print peer reviewed journal

published twice a year, in March and September.

It is a subscribed journal (for the first year only)

focusing on the issues pertinent to the field of

management and its associated disciplines.

Contemporary Research in Management

(Volume III) the publication from Center For

Research (CFR), SDMIMD consists of research

papers authored by the faculty members of the

Institute. The research articles in this publication

are informative and timely in character as they

seek to address challenging issues in the area of

management theory and practice.

The digital version of “Dimensions”, the student

magazine of SDMIMD went live on March 20,

2014, as part of its Go-Green Initiative. Prof.

S.Prabhakar, Secretary, SDM Education Trust,

inaugurated the digital version of Dimensions by

clicking the link. The student magazine which

was brought out in conventional form from 1999

took its digital form to gain the wider reach

through Internet. The first digital issue of Dimen-

sions focused on entrepreneurship and related

topics. The Dimensions is on Open Access

platform and is available at www.sdmimd.net/

MDP for MyPol Executives

A Management Development Program on Data

Analysis and Business Modeling with MS-Excel

was recently conducted at Mysore Polymers and

Rubber Products Ltd.(MyPol) for its executives by

Prof. Mohamed Minhaj. The program provided a

comprehensive introduction to MS-Excel and

helped the participants understand the effective

ways to use Excel for Data Analysis, Modelling,

and Decision Making.

Faculty Development Program (FDPs)

for Shri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysore

SDMIMD extended academic support to ShriJayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysore

in organizing Faculty Development Programs for SJCE Faculty Members under Technical Education

Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).

International Finance Conference

on Emerging Trends in Finance and

Accounting

Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Professor of Economics,

Bond University, Australia, in his keynote address

on the topic “Fraud, Corruption and Bribery: How

to prevent and how to detect?” at the Inaugural

Session. In his talk, Dr. Kumar briefly discussed

why people commit fraud, using fraud triangle

theory; and shared the techniques and tools

used in preventing and detecting fraud based on

our cutting edge research. The talk also focused

on impact of fraud on economic activities like

FDI, stock market and GDP taking examples of

some case presentations.

Dr. Ullas Rao, Conference Chair, introduced the

conference theme and the importance for the

current economic status of India. The conference

has witnessed participation from India and other

countries including, Australia, Dubai, Ethiopia,

France, Bangladesh, Iran and Israel. 74 papers on

the conference theme and sub-themes will be

presented during this 2-Day International Confer-

ence. Four technical sessions by eminent person-

alities from corporate and academia will be part

of this conference deliberation.

ucation, Rane Group, India, delivered the first

technical session.

SDMIMD, Mysore (principal academic partners)

and J.A. Alpha Business Research & Publishers

Pvt. Ltd, Chennai jointly organized an Asia-Pacific

Conference on Global Business, Economics,

Finance and Social Sciences which was held from

August 1 – 3, 2014, at Village Hotel Albert Court,

Singapore.

The conference jointly held by SDMIMD and J A

Alpha on 11-13 July 2014 at Chennai was a

successful event with a number of insightful

national and international papers being

presented. The conference was well attended

and included several thought provoking special

lectures. Another highlight from the SDMIMD

angle is the award of the Best Research Paper for

the paper “Are smaller private sector commercial

banks in India a likely target for takeover in India?

An Investigation” written jointly by Dr. N.R.

Parasuraman & Dr. Ullas Rao.

Foundation Day Lecture 2014

“Business is not only about focusing on earning

profit but also about removing social inequality.

It is more important to share with others if you

have more than what you can consume” said

Businesses, ITC Group during the Foundation

Day Lecture held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at our

the Institute Auditorium.

Mr. Sivakumar started his speech by mentioning

three specific phrases from the Vision and

Mission statement of SDMIMD- Creative

tenacity, Intellectual Maturity and Social

Responsibility. He linked these statements to his

own experiences in the formation of e-Choupal

initiative at ITC.

He spoke about the importance of tenacity and

recounted some obstacles they faced at the

initiation of e-Choupal in terms of finance, ex-

ecution, and other hindrances like resistance

from traders for the new idea. He urged the

young members in the audience to distinguish

between tenacity and stubbornness. He then

moved on to talk about Intellectual Maturity and

mentioned about the relevance to context when

dealing with situations.

Union Budget Conclave 2014

SDMIMD in collaboration with CII Mysore

organized Union Budget Conclave 2014 at

SDMIMD Campus on July 10, 2014. The event

started with a live screening of Union Budget

followed by a panel discussion represented by

SDMIMD alumnus N Ravi Shankar, Founder &

CEO of Aim High Consulting, addressed the new

batch of PGDM 2014-16 on June 17, 2014. In his

talk, to the students, he underscored the point

‘to chase success not money’.

Mr. V. Ramasubramanian, DGM-HR, Rane

Holdings, Chennai, delivered a talk on “HR

Transformation: the Challenge Continues” on

June 18, 2014. The talk was blended with

real-life examples and gave an overall picture of

current HR challenges. He opined ‘HR can play

an important role in facilitating a win-win

relationship with associates and employees by

aligning the business goals of the organization

with the life goals of the employees (and not the

other way round!)’.

Mr. N. Ramanuja, Former CMD, HMT and

Chairman, BVB (Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan),

Karnataka stated ‘Management does not mean

only attending classes and wearing suits. Many

elements of management can be seen in our

own experiences’. He was addressing the

students during the orientation program.

International Exchange Students

SDMIMD played host to more than a dozen of

foreign students from Mexico, Turkey,

Switzerland, Finland and a number of other

European countries on August 3, 2014. The

students groups was a mix of Graduate and

Undergraduate from medicine to engineering to

business management fields.

Ms. Preethy delivered the talk to the new batch

of PGDM 2014-16 on June 19, 2014.

Ms. SujataRajpal, Head-Corporate Communication

& PR of Software Paradigm International (SPI),

Mysore delivered the talk on the topic PR

Attributes and Challenges which highlighted the

importance of branding and communication in PR.

Former Professor of Statistics Prof. Bhat

Marakini. Prof. Bhat was invited to address the

new batch of PGDM 2014-16 on the topic

‘Quantitative Techniques in Management’ on

June 20, 2014.

Mr. K. Sriram, Enclaves Infrastructure, Mysore, in

his talk organized as a part of weeklong

induction program for the new batch of PGDM

2014-16 on June 18, 2014 outlined the general

attributes that youngsters must develop to

succeed in the face of challenges.

Indian Industries (CII)-Mysore Zone and Director-

Operations and Technology, Kluber

Lubrication India Pvt. Ltd, addressed the new

batch of PGDM2014-16 on June 19, 2014.

Dr. R. Indira, Professor (Retd.), Department of

Sociology, University of Mysore, Mysore, called

upon the new batch of PGDM 2014-16 to be

sensitive to social realities.

Dr. M. Selvam, Professor & Director – Research,

Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu delivered a talk

on “Contemporary issues in management – A

specific reference to managerial

communication” on July 28, 2014. The talk was

enriched with innovative presentation and

focused on the need for managerial personnel to

make a transition from good to great

communication. The program was well received

by the audience comprising of management

students at SDMIMD Mysore.

Dr. T. Kanti Srikantaiah is currently a professor

from Maryland University and brings with him his

20 years of experience earlier working for the

World Bank in Washington D.C., USA. He

delivered a guest lecture on “Managing

knowledge in project environment”at Institute’s

Auditorium on August 04, 2014. The talk was well

received by the students.

As a part of the orientation lectures for the new

batch of first year students, Mr. N. Chandan an

alumnus of the PGDM batch 2004-06 who is

presently working as Sr. Manager – Business

Planning, Harita Fehrer Limited delivered a talk

outlining his experiences he had in his first

project which concerned the solutions in the

supply chain of the client he worked for.

Prof. Susanne M. Bruyère, ILR School Associate

Dean of Outreach, Professor of Disability Studies

and Director of Employment and Disability

Institute, Cornell University, New York, addressed

the students and faculty members of SDM Insti-

tute for Management Development during a spe-

cial talk on the topic “Why it is a good business to

hire people with disabilities?” on July 22, 2014.

This talk was arranged in collaboration with

GRAAM. Prof. Suzanne outlined specific issues

involved in hiring of people with disability, their

training needs and the organizational initiatives

needed to make this process successful. The talk

was followed by a Question and Answer session

on related issued in the Indian environment.

Prerana - Entrepreneurship Case

Writing Competition

Swayam E-cell encouraged SDMites to get

inspired by the journey taken by entrepreneurs

and organized Prerana -Entrepreneurship Case

Writing Competition. Platform was provided to

aspirants of management assimilators to study

local entrepreneurs and write an informative case

study on an entrepreneur’s journey to success.

Different teams examined the success stories of

entrepreneurs such as Mr. RaviShankar, AIM High

Consulting; Mr. JagadeeshKumar, Neulite

Products Pvt Ltd.; Mr. SaeedManju, Tindipotha;

Mr. Bharath Shetty, YogeaIndia; Mr. G. Srinivasa

Babu (Digital Babu). The teams presented their

case studies in an event on July 17, 2014.

Dr. M.R. Suresh, Professor-Marketing, judged the

case presentations.

Swayam's CERABRA 2014 Quiz

Competition

SDMIMD E-Cell Swayam organized CERABRA-2014,

an Entrepreneurial Quiz Competition on August

24, 2014. The Masterminds Team with Mr. Prateek

Jain, Mr. Anand S., and Harish Kumar Janghel

emerged as winners by successfully completing

three rounds of intensified cerebral activity. Team

TPH with Mohammed Mr. Tauheed Ur Rahman,

Mr. Pradeep Kumar Meena and Mr. Himanshu

Kumar Singh were the Runners Up of CERABRA

2014.

Installation of the Toastmasters

On Saturday August 9, 2014, the SDMIMD

Toastmasters club was inaugurated by TM

Anitha, the Divisional Governor from Mangalore.

Twenty four members of the club were

administered the oath by TM Anitha. This was

followed by the Office bearers of the new club

taking the oath of office. This club has the

distinction of being the first club in Mysore to be

started by an Educational Institute.

Khoj 2014

KHOJ 2014, the talent search event of SDMIMD,

shouldered by Team Samprati was a glimpse into

what's in store for the upcoming festivals. With a

myriad of events and plethora of new activities, it

marked the beginning of the academic year and

assured a scintillating festival season in college.

Academic Tour to Dubai

Top Twenty students of SDMIMD of the PGDM

batch 2013-15, in collaboration with the British

University in Dubai (BUID), went on academic

sojourn to Dubai. The students were in BUID

from the 29 March, 2014 to 08 April, 2014.

During their stay the students were exposed to

the international management studies, culture

and socio-economic environment of Middle

East. The tour was carefully planned to

integrate the academic insight with fun for the

young aspiring managers.

Runners-up at

IET’s PATW competition

Mr. Hitesh Subramanyam of PGDM 2014-16 was

the runner-up at IET’s PATW competition held at

Bangalore on Friday, May 17, 2014. The topic “The

Next Industrial Revolution using 3D Advanced

Manufacturing” presented by Mr. Hitesh has made

him to secure the runner-up position giving tough

competition on technical and presentation

capabilities to the young engineers, professionals

and innovators. The competition ‘Present Around

the World (PATW)’ was organized by IET (The

Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK) was

aimed at bringing young engineers and their ideas

together to build a better world through

engineering and technology.

SDMites emerge as

Winners in CURA 2014 Fest

Mr. Gaurav Kar and Mr. Mohit Behal of PGDM

13-15 have won First Position in Ad Design and

Management Extempore events respectively. The

events were organized as a part of CURA 2014 –

the all India annual management fest of Future

Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata.

They have won the Management Quiz organized

as a part of CURA 2014.

Kushal Swain won

Logo Design Competition

Mr. Kushal Swain of PGDM 2013-15 has won the

logo design competition organized by IMI Delhi.

The entries received across India by Center for

Women Leadership (CWL), IMI, Delhi, were judged

for the conceptualization and design presenting

the aim of CWL. The work submitted by Mr. Kushal

Swain has won the Certificate of Appreciation and

a cash prize.

were invited as speakers in the HR Meet 2014 in

Kathmandu, Nepal. As a Key Note Speaker,

Dr. Mousumi delivered a lecture on ‘Emerging

Trends in HRM’. Dr. Nilanjan addressed the

gathering on the topic “Strategic Dimensions of

HRM’. The Meet was held on 21 March, 2014 with

participation from more than 200 human resource

professionals from financial institutions,

non-government organisations, international non-

government organisations, government

organisations and corporate houses. Dr. Nilanjan

and Dr. Mousumi also took part in the Panel

discussion on ‘Workforce Diversity’ during the

event.

SDMites distributed notebooks and stationary to

more than a 150 students on Monday, June 23,

2014. The beneficiaries of this institute’s CSR

program included poor students enrolled in lower

primary and middle schools in centurial old

Government Higher Primary School at Jockey

Quarters Body Guard Land.

Library operated by District Administration for the

Children of Kavadies and Mahouts who come with

the elephants for Mysore Dasara. SDMIMD donat-

ed stationeries and drawing books. Orientation

about use of books and reading habits was also

been provided by Dr. Sunil M.V., Librarian.
