RVP’s Message Greetings Region 6 Iris Members
Why is it that it feels like spring and iris season flies by faster and faster each
year. Hoping everyone had a great iris season, one that included great bloom,
plenty of time to hybridize new iris and time to evaluate previous crosses, time to
participate in your clubs show and now time to dig and prepare for your club’s
upcoming iris rhizome sale!
Bloom season peaked in late May for us but Japanese iris and pseudatas put on a
show until the second week in July (see below). I love sharing an iris bloom
during this time of year as most gardeners can't believe that iris are still blooming
in our garden; they think iris bloom should have been over for almost a month now. Extending the iris
season by almost a month is just one more reason to raise all classes.. When you love iris season, who wants
to see it come to an end?
I would like to thank the Columbus group for hosting a great spring regional! Jody Nolin, we truly
appreciate your sharing your garden with us. The spurias were lovely, judges training outstanding, and the
dinner nice. Who doesn't love a great auction, John helping us all to dig deeper into our pockets so we could
win the highest bid and take home our great prizes from the auction? I think I can speak for all in attendance;
the weather may have been hot, hot, hot but the company and event were the best, best, best!
Don't forget to mark your calendars for the fall regional coming up September 17 near Fort Wayne, IN. It is
also time to start planning to attend the 2017 spring regional/ Median Mini-national Convention right here in
our own Region 6 at Lafayette, IN (May 18-20, 2017). Anytime an iris grower can spend time with their
fellow iris growers, new friendships blossom. Hope to see many of you at both of the meetings. Looking
forward to seeing everyone at the fall regional! There’ll be lots of iris talk to share along with many iris
happenings to discuss!
Happy gardening! Barb

Youth Programs Report
Our mission is to encourage and develop a strong youth membership in Region 6 and foster new youth
membership in AIS, as well as interest in iris for the next generation.
Youth membership in many of the Regions is at an all-time low. We are hoping that through your assistance
we can boost the number of Youth Members in Region 6. We are also hoping to introduce a younger
generation to IRIS!
We can do this by providing a club commitment to add Youth Members in each club and/or a program to
encourage new youth members.
IDEAS FOR CLUB YOUTH COMMITMENT: 1. Contact schools near you to inquire about 4-H, FFA (Future Farmers of America) or Montessori
Gardening programs and ask them to participate in a club function.
2. Consider paying for a # of memberships for promising youths.
3. Encourage youth members to attend local meetings and Regional meetings.
4. Consider asking youth members to participate in a club sale.
5. Offer speakers to go to schools to talk about iris hybridizing in science classes. Or invite school classes to
your local gardens.
6. Offer to have youth assist in planting a garden or working on a philanthropic project.
7. Sponsor a talk about historic irises or why interest in irises needs to be encouraged by youth.
8. Have a youth-only auction. Give them "iris dollars" to spend. Have members donate good rhizomes with
matching photos.
9. Consider giving youth members a plot or piece of land to grow their own irises.
OR: Brainstorm with your members to determine your own special YOUTH PROGRAM.
GOOD LUCK!
THE FUTURE GENERATIONS DESERVE TO KNOW THE WONDER OF IRISES!

2016 Region 6 Spring Meeting
Many thanks to: Bob Bauer, Anna Mae Miller, and Nancy Vaughan for your photos.
The 2016 spring meeting took 47 attendees to Bellefontaine & Rushsylvania, OH
on a very sunny and hot day. The event was hosted by the Northeast Ohio Iris
Society and Jody Nolin. It was wonderful to see old friends, as well as meeting new ones for a day of
viewing iris in the garden.
Our day started at the Logan County History Center in Bellefontaine, OH. We had a
tasty brunch, prepared by NEOIS members. After eating and visiting, we toured the
museum and guest garden. The museum includes many exhibits with historical
artifacts, which made for a very interesting visit. (photo of Patrick Spence in
museum) Meanwhile outdoors, attendees were impressed with three nice size
clumps of Jill Copeland’s Spec-X seedlings. S5TXOG-7 was over 4 feet tall with a
deep red edged signal on yellow pedals.
S5TXOG-1 was about 3 foot tall with a
deep maroon signal on yellow pedals.
And GXA-1 the shortest of the three
seedlings was approximately 2.5 feet with a yellow signal on
lavender pedals (photos shown were taken at Jody’s garden). All three had
good substance as they were holding up well in the 90 degree temperatures. Unfortunately the weather had
been very hot and the other iris in the guest garden had bloomed out.
Forming a car caravan we moved on to the Rushsylvania Firehouse guest garden. The firehouse had a
lovely perennial garden with many guest iris incorporated. Bloom season had past for the earlier varieties of
iris, but Kasperek Seedling 6SP-133A (Spur) and Jill Copeland’s LA Seedling ‘Michigan In Dallas’ (photo)
were in bloom for all to enjoy along with her Spec-X seedlings that were
blooming at the Historic Center . As the temperatures continued to rise we
moved on to Jody Nolin’s Garden ‘Stick and Thistle’.
Jody’s spacious gardens surround her
home with many types of iris planted
in her perennial beds. The focus of the
Nolin garden is a large koi pond,
where the guest iris were located.
Jody also has many other lovely
Spuria, Species, and Japanese iris at
the edge of the pond and in containers floating in it. Of course
there were many colorful koi to observe in the pond. I came
across a lovely clump of ‘Comanche Moon’ (Jenkins, 2008)
hidden on the hillside. It was a little clump of sunshine in the
shade of a few trees. Jody has an impressive collection of Spuria iris growing in her garden. ‘Sultan’s
Sash’ (Niswonger, 1978); ‘Eleven Point River’ (Niswonger, 2001) and ‘Ibex Ibis’ (Kasperek, 2012) were
just a few putting on a fine show for our visit.

Judges training was conducted in mid-afternoon by Patrick Spence in Jody’s large Spuria garden. He stood
in the garden surrounded by Spuria iris, with the sun beating down on him, as the participants edged further
and further into the tree line to seek the shade. Patrick kept going and going, despite the heat, and included
many points particular to Spuria that made the training enjoyable as well as educational. After the judges
training everyone relaxed and cooled down with ‘black cows’ aka ice cream floats.
The group moved to the air conditioned church in Rushsylvania for Patrick’s presentation on iris in the
Pacific Northwest. After his presentation we had a lively auction and then dinner. It was a pleasure to have
Patrick (and Margaret) come all the way from the west coast to be a part of our regional meeting. As a final
note, it was really wonderful to be in Ohio for the 2016 spring meeting, many thanks to the Northeast Ohio
Iris Society and Jody Nolin for an enjoyable day. If you were unable to attend the 2016 spring meeting,
mark your calendars now for May 18 – 20, 2017 for the Mini Median Convention/Region 6 Spring Meeting
to be held in Layfayette, IN. It is sure to be a convention you won’t want to miss.

A Plea for Historic MTBs Most of you will have heard by now of the National Collection scheme, ably headed by Charlie Carver. I
have volunteered to hold a collection of MTB irises, with emphasis on historics. Once we’re confident in the
identity of a newly acquired iris, the next step is propagation. Through the Guardian Gardens program, we’ll
be able to get these historic treasures into more gardens to ensure their continued survival. We keep careful
records on all acquisitions, including provenance as far back as we can trace it.
Working with Charlie and with Jack Finney, I’ve begun the search for the really old ones. Many, we fear,
are gone forever, but you never know when someone will come forward with a pup of ‘Nambe’, so famous
in its day and now missing. If you grow older MTBs or can steer me toward someone who does, please let
me know. I will gladly pay for them if they are missing from the collection. Ever since Clarence Mahan got
me started with his adorable ‘Robin Goodfellow’ and ‘Reminiscence’, I’ve loved MTBs, so holding a
National Collection of them will be a joy.
