•Cracking- Opening in the surface layer allowing moisture to infiltrate into the base and sub-grade layers. Types of cracking are: Longitudinal, Transverse, Block, Alligator, and hairline. Block and alligator cracking are the most severe.

Pavement Surface

• Rutting: Depressions of the surface layer, typically found in wheel paths. Ruts vary in severity and can become hazardous due to the uneven driving surface they create. They also create ponding of water which can eventually leech into subsurface layers.

Pavement Surface

• Raveling: These areas can be found anywhere on surface pavement. Typically raveling occurs along construction joints or in conjunction with other surface failures such as rutting. A loss of surface aggregate and a rough, course texture is noticed. This condition precedes more serious pavement failures.

Pavement Failure: Failure of the surface layer of pavement, including potholes, punch-outs and severe alligator cracking. Failure of the Surface layer can be caused by failure of the sub-grade or base layers or the surface layer itself.
