Have you ever wondered what kind

of spring Tigger would need to

bounce as high as he does? Or just

what the minimum requirements

are for Inspector Gadget’s spring-

loaded boots? How about the old

English beast Spring-heeled Jack,

who, according to the myth, stalked

the streets of Victorian London?

With Halloween on our minds,

we’ve decided to look at that old

Victorian folklore legend.

A Victorian Folklore Legend

So, who was Spring-heeled Jack?

He was first sighted in London,

1837. His grip was described as

‘cold and clammy as those of a

corpse.’ Spring-heeled Jack leapt

over a 9ft wall, shrieking and

giggling. Legend has it that he can

effortlessly jump on top of houses,

dancing on the rooftops and

vanishing into the night. The last

time he made his terrifying

presence known was in 2012. So

watch out this Halloween…

Who was Spring-heeled Jack?

But the real question is, how the

devil did this devil manage to

leap so high? What type of

equipment would he need to

vanish so swiftly? As engineering

specialists and amateur

paranormal investigators – for

this Halloween, at least – we

thought we’d take a gander at

this mystery.

How did he do it?

Extension springs are loaded in

tension and designed with loops

or hooks at either end. When

force is applied, the spring

attempts to bring the two ends

back together. Pretty handy for

lever mechanisms and doors, but

not so much if you’re looking to

bound as high as houses. Even

the large extension springs we

manufacture aren’t going to cut it

for the spring-heeled terror.

We produce high-quality torsion

springs – but are they perfect for

springing 9ft in the air? Torsion

springs feature a coiled spring with

two legs at either end. When the

legs are pushed down, the spring

naturally resists. You’ll find our

designs in hinges, lever return

applications and counterbalances.

But unless Jack’s wants to

straighten up upon landing torsion

springs aren’t for him.

Compression springs are probably

the most common spring

configuration you’ll find. When

pressure is applied to the spring, it

pushes back against the load in

order to reform to its usual shape.

And while they’re used on things

like door locks and electrical

switches, they could – if you’re

Spring-heeled Jack, at least – be

placed in your boots in order to

reach some truly dizzying heights.

If Spring-heeled Jack wants to

bound as high as he can,

compression springs will do the

job. And there are tons of shapes

this Halloween hell-hound can

choose from, from conical and

barrel to hourglass or the traditional

cylindrical designs. And, although

no demonic entity has ever asked

us to create springs for heels, we

can create springs to suit any

specific requirement.

Here at Airedale Springs we

take our spring manufacturing

seriously. Using computer

simulations and the latest CNC

machines, coupled with

traditional methods, we can

create springs and wire forms

to any specification.
