The recession has hit most businesses hard and theaviation industry is no exception. With the presenteconomic climate it's important to keepmaintenance and operating costs under tightcontrol, and like many airlines before them ThaiAirways are discovering that the Juniper enginewash system is probably the most cost effectivearound. GE also recognise this and recommendJuniper equipment in their Aircraft MaintenanceManuals.

In July of this year Thai Airways took delivery of oneof our 2x50 gallon wash rigs (JMP/LUFT/D/4972/C500) together with five sets of wash probesincluding a set of GE90-115B long engine probes(JMP/GE90-115B/D/4948). Steve Marshall flew outthere at the beginning of August to commission therig, give on-the-job training to over 30 techniciansand engineers, and perform the first on wing enginewash on the GE90-115B engines fitted to one oftheir Boeing 777-300 aircraft. This was a greatsuccess and the benefits of the Juniper enginewash system were obvious to everyone present.

Thai Airways took such an interest in the progress of theirrecently ordered 2x50 gallon wash rig (see cover story), thatin May of this year, we were happy to welcome SomkidPunpanich, Manager of their Aircraft Tooling and StoreDivision, who paid us a visit to assess the quality contol ontheir new rig before despatch and also take a look at ourmanufacturing facilities. Chris and Andy Marshall gave himthe full tour and introduced him to the Juniper range.

Whilst the Juniper 2x25 wash rig iseasy to use, there are certain

procedures in setting up thathave to be followed in the

right order to achieveoptimum results. Tosupplement the traininggiven at the commissioningof the rig, Juniper have

produced a comprehensiveoperation guide video to talk

you through the rig's set up stepby step, from the initial charging of the onboard nitrogencylinders, through the heating of the tanks, performing an enginewash, clearing the bleed lines of excess water and re-stowing ofequipment on the rig.

Owners of our2x25 rig will findthis an invaluableresource. Toobtain your copyof this CD,please contactus direct.

British Airways on the mat...

The situation at Gatwick is that noengine wash can take place unless allthe waste water is collected, and asSteve Marshall had already been indiscussions with British Airways, thiswas seen as the ideal opportunity to tryout Juniper's new trailer mounted KyotoContainment mat (JMP/KYOTO/D/6777/C200) and a date in May 2010was agreed.

As this was to be their first engine wash, there was a brief presentation beforehand which included the official GE CoreWash Procedure video, with Juniperequipment featuring prominently, then itwas on to the wash proper.

Once the Boeing 777-200 was inposition, the day started with a look at the water collection mat, demonstrating it's deployment andfeatures with the assembled personneldeclaring themselves impressed withthe systems' flexibility and ease of use.Full advantage was taken of thisopportunity and Ken Moore of BritishAirways shot plenty of detailed videofootage which has now been editedand is available to view online (contactus for the details). The engine washproceeded without a hitch and thecollection mat did its job beautifully.

In June last year Aegean Airlines bought the 2x25 gallon wash rig and aset of V2500 short probes (JMP/V25OO/D/4040) to service the V2500engines fitted to their Airbus A320 aircraft, and at the same time tookdelivery of their new Juniper trailer mounted Kyoto containment mat(JMP/KYOTO/D/6777/C200)

Steve and Chris Marshall travelled to Athens International Airport tocommission the equipment and give staff training in its operation.

After a day's training in the hangar with the engineering and maintenanceteam, everyone reassembled later that evening to put the equipmentthrough it's paces with an engine wash on the A320. The wash wentsmoothly and everyone was impressed with their first experience of thenew water collection system which performed beautifully.

GoT2echnics April 2010Training and commissioning of Emirates Airlines new 2x25 gallon wash rig(JMP/CFM56/D/4777/C200), and GE90-115B long engine probes(JMP/GE90-115B/D/4948), was to be carried out in April of last year withdemonstration washes planned for the GE90-115B and CFM56-5C enginesfitted to their Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A340-310 aircraft. Due tounavoidable circumstances, Steve was unable to carry out an engine wash inthe allotted timescale, but full staff training was completed with the assembledengineering staff very enthusiastic and complimentary about the Juniperequipment. A successful wash was carried out the following evening by thetrained staff and everyone was happy with the result.

Whilst in Dubai, Steve paid a visit to Fly Dubai to follow up on an enquiry for the2x25 gallon rig and tooling for the CFM56-7 engine. This proved to be aproductive visit and, after a few questions were answered, the order was placed.

GoT2echnics are a small and dynamicindependent repair and maintenanceoperation based at Landvetter Airport inGothenburg, Sweden. In May last year theybought a 2x25 gallon rig together with a set of CFM56-7 engine probes(JMP/CFM56/D/4462) and Steve Marshalltravelled to Sweden to commission the rigand give staff training with an engine washon a CFM56-7 fitted to a Primera Boeing737-800. Training and wash went well and afollow up report on the wash revealed a 10ºmargin of recovery, which was extremelysatisfactory.

Steve Marshall flew to Jakarta, Indonesia in August of this year to commissiona 2x25 gallon wash rig (JMP/CFM56/D/4777/C200) and CFM56-5B longengine probes (JMP/CFM56/D/6527). Staff training was given with an enginewash on the CFM56-5B engines fitted to an A320-200 aircraft using the CFM56-5B long probes originally designed for use on the A321.

This was the first time these probes had been demonstrated on the A320 andthey fitted perfectly. Due to the very dirty condition of the engines three washeswere performed, and everyone present was very impressed with the results andease of use of the Juniper equipment.

GE advocate regular washing for all their engines andspecifically recommend the Juniper compressor washsystem, so Ethiopian Airlines have bought one of Juniper's2x25 gallon rigs (JMP/GE90/D/4038/C200) together withlong (JMP/GE90-115B/D/4948) and short (JMP/GE90-115B/D/4949) probes for the GE90-115B engines fitted totheir Boeing 777-200 aircraft. Steve and Andy Marshall flewout in September of this year to give training to theirmaintenance and engineering staff and commission the rig. Both sets of probes were demonstrated, with the short

probes being used in the first wash and the long probes inthe second.

The washes went well, and even though the engines werestill fairly new and had only been operational for a fewmonths, positive results were expected and achieved.

Note: The rig is the standard 2x25 gallon wash rig but is sonumbered because it is supplied as a package with theGE90 probes

Boeing Shared Services Group at the Naval Air Station,Patuxent River, Maryland, USA, where they test andevaluate new aviation equipment for the United StatesNavy, purchased one of Juniper's 2x25 gallon wash rigstogether with short (JMP/CFM56/D/4462) and long(JMP/CFM56/D/6645) probes for washing the CFM56-7engines fitted to their P-8A Poseidon Aircraft. The P-8APoseidon, modified from the Boeing 737-800, is areplacement for the P3 Orion and will feature the latestASW weapons technology and electronics. Over 115 ofthese aircraft will be delivered to the US Navy over thenext 10 years.

Steve Marshall flew out there in late June to train engineeringstaff in the use and maintenance of the rig and wash probes.

Juniper proves a cost effectivesolution for Nayak

Aircraft maintenance company, NayakAircraft Services, were contracted toperform an 'A' check on a Belle Air(Albania) A319 Aircraft at MalpensaAirport, Milan in June of last year and hadneither the wash rig or tooling to carry outthe required engine washes on the V2500engines as part of the check. Nayak werekeen to find out more about Juniper'sengine washing system and reckoned thisto be a good chance to see the system in

action and receive training in the use of thewash rig and tooling.

When they asked for our help we readilyagreed and saw this as a goodopportunity to show what Juniperequipment can do and demonstratehow cost effective our engine washingsystem was in comparison to most ofthe alternatives.

Air Italy, a Juniper customer also basedin Malpensa, were kind enough to loanus their recently acquired 2x25 wash rig(JMP/CFM56/D/4777/C200) for theengine wash, and we took along a set ofthe V2500 short probes (JMP/V2500/D/4040) to complete the tooling.

Both the training and engine wash wentwell and Nayak personnel declaredthemselves impressed with the versatilityand ease of use of the Juniper system.

New tooling for the Airbus A400M Juniper rigs just keep ongoing...

Checking probe fit on the Challenger 604

Recently, Europrop International hadused the Juniper Universal rig(JMP/HER/D/114/C600) to wash thenew TP400-D6 engine for the AirbusMilitary A400M aircraft and onlymanaged disappointing results usingtheir own tooling.

After asking our advice and reviewingthe positive results we'd achievedwashing the Hercules T56 engine usingour own spray ring tooling, ITP, who areresponsible for developing tooling forthe TP400-D6, suggested we design asimilar spray ring to fit their engine. Soin May of this year Steve and ChrisMarshall flew to Moron Air Force Basenear Seville, Spain, where the enginewas on it's METS test frame, to measureup and take dimensions. Detaileddrawings of the new design are now inthe final development stage.

In September 2010, an engine washwas planned on a CF34-3B engine fittedto a Challenger 604 aircraft. Thepurpose of the wash was to see if ourCF34-3A1 (JMP/CF34-3A1/D/6850)long engine probes would fit without anymodifications.

Steve Marshall had already hadassurances from GE that both engineswere physically identical, so he travelledto Ataturk Airport in Turkeyaccompanied by Juniper's Turkishagent, Zeki Koroglu of MillenniumAerospace who had organised the loanof a 2x25 rig from Onur Air, anotherJuniper customer also based at AtaturkAirport, for the purposes of this wash.

Steve took a set of CF34-3A1 longprobes with him, and although due tounforeseen circumstances the washdidn’t take place, it was established thatthe probes fitted as hoped.

Rolls Royce asked us to replace a twinhose assembly on one of their Adourcompressor washing rigs (JMP/ADOUR/D/0760/C500) at RAF Valley inNorth Wales. Unusually, the hose had afaulty end fitting and the complete unitwas replaced under the terms of theirwarranty.

Whilst he was there, Steve Marshallwas shown one of the early JuniperMK2 fluid replenishment rigs that hadgiven many years of faithful service andhad now been modified and pressedinto service as part of a hydraulictesting rig - it just goes to show….oldJuniper rigs never die..!

The Juniper range of short engine probes are available to fit most engine types. We also produce long probes for thoseoccasions when it’s more convenient to engine wash with the thrust reverser doors closed. Below is a full list of probes(the long probes are on the shaded background) together with part numbers, engines covered and a generic fitmentguide. Each Juniper part number refers to a set of two probes.

Engine Preparation - Refer toappropriate AircraftMaintenance Manual.

Open left and right thrust reverserson the engine to be washed inaccordance with the instructionsdetailed in the appropriate AMM.

CAUTION: Ensure the enginefan is held securely during thefitting of the engine probes.

Attach the engine probe retentionclamps to the fan reverser inner orouter support ring. Generally, forsmaller fan engines (such as the CFM)this will be in the 10.00 and 2.00o’clock positions, and for larger fanengines (such as the CF6) in the 8.00and 4.00 positions, aft looking forward.Guide the probes through the fanoutlet guide vanes (OGV’s) from the

aft end at locations adjacent to theretention clamps, locating them overthe booster/fan splitter so that thenozzles point between the booster inletguide vanes into the booster.

Put each probe aft mounton the probe retentionclamp screw and fit theretention knobs.

Adjust each probe aftmount to hold the probessafely in place using theallen key provided.Connect the twin hoseassembly (provided) toboth of the engine probeswhilst holding the probessecurely to avoidmovement, making surethat the probes areattached securely to the

engine with the hoses attached.Connect delivery hose from the washrig to the twin hose assembly. Probeinstallation is now complete.

CAUTION: Check that probe nozzlesare clear of the back of the fan.

is mainly in the heat, light and powerindustries. To date, over 450 rigs havebeen supplied to customers worldwidethrough Siemens. We still supply sparesfor this family of rigs, and the newermodels have been developed for usewith their latest range of gas turbines, theSGT-100, SGT-200 and SGT-300.

Since the Early 1980s, Juniper hasbeen supplying industrial compressorwashing rigs to Siemens (formerlyknown as Ruston Gas Turbines andthen European Gas Turbines). Theserigs have both on and offshoreapplications, with many rigs offshorebeing supplied for use on North Sea oilplatforms, while the onshore business

Back in the 1980s Juniper startedspreading the word about the benefits ofengine washing to commercial airlines. In those days, if a wash was performedat all it was usually done after an engine'check. Thrust reverser doors would beopen with all areas of the engineaccessible, and our short wash probeswere developed to work within theseconditions.

These days, the benefits of regularengine washes are more clearlyunderstood and acknowledged, andengines are being washed withoutwaiting for scheduled service intervalsso a speedy turnaround is essential. Our range of long probes have beendeveloped for washes were no enginedisconnections are required and thethrust reversers can remain closed,
