AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN THE SOUTH EASTERN COUNTIES (SUSSEX, KENT, SURREY and

LONDON [south of the Thames] 1914-2009. T. N. Hancock.

It will surprize many people to know that a minimum of some 5,200 aircraft have crashed and been

‘written-off (eg, did not fly again) in this area since powered flight began and this list attempts to give the bare details

of these - it should be emphasised that these are the crashes that resulted in the aircraft being destroyed, NOT those, of

which there many, which crash-landed, were salvaged during WW 2 by the RAF Maintenance Units at Faygate West

Sussex (49 MU) and Sundridge Kent (86 MU), repaired at civilian repair factories at Brooklands, Croydon, Gatwick,

Rochester and Thornton Heath, and flew again. I use the words ‘this list attempts to give’ advisedly as the recording of

these crashes was down, quite frequently, to the whim of an RAF clerk who may have made mistakes in locations and

other details. It is intended that this list will give a basis for further research to those interested in a particular crash.

Newspaper reports on wartime crashes are rare but those in peacetime may carry an account in the local press. Each

entry gives the date, the aircraft’s serial (identification) number, it’s type, the unit it was serving with at the time it

crashed and that unit’s home airfield (including the county if outside the area); it should be remembered that a great

many young airmen died in these crashes (signified [where known] by a number followed by ‘k‘ after the appropriate

entry), often in horrific circumstances and also, occasionally, civilians on the ground ( shown as ‘+’ after the aircrew

deaths). Civilian aircraft have their registration, type and location of crash given and the fatalities if known. Crashes in

the sea are included only if within 10 miles of the coast. The airfields covered in the text are:

Early Aviation 1910-1914 There were two very early aerodromes in the area, Brookland SR and Eastchurch K, and at both of these many early pilots learnt

to fly and built and tested new aeroplanes – and sometimes died doing this.

The crashes listed under World War One are nowhere near comprehensive, either in number or in

their exact locations and although the aircraft were based in the counties covered not all of the crashes may have happened in

those counties; however the short range of the aircraft means that it is probable most of the crashes happened in the vicinity of

their home aerodromes and during the demanding operations of take-offs and landings. It should be borne in

mind that parachutes were not used by the British air forces until the early 1920s.

BETWEEN THE WARS

There was a massive rundown of the RAF during 1919-20, resulting in much fewer airfields; the aircraft were becoming

more reliable the introduction of parachutes meant less casualties when crashes did occur. During the 1920s and early

‘30s the only country militarily strong enough to be considered a possible threat to the UK was France so that London

was encircled by fighter stations. The RAF began to increase in size significantly during the 1930s and modern

operational types began to arrive. These more sophisticated and powerful aircraft, equipped with such novelties as flaps,

retractable undercarriages and enclosed cockpits (not liked initially!), increased the number of accidents as pilots

converted from the elderly biplanes - witness the Hurricane crashes during 1939. Training schools for the new RAFVR

were established at flying clubs, and civilian-owned aircraft and aerodromes began to appear from the early 1920s on,

contributing to the number of crashes. In addition scheduled airline services began between Croydon (London’s airport)

and European capitals and various aircraft manufacturers built several prototype aircraft which did not go into

production but still crashed!
