 Antenna Installation 5

If your AIRAVE is ever unable to receive a GPS signal, itmay become necessary to improve the reception byinstalling the GPS antenna. This section outlines theinstallation of this external GPS antenna.

In very rare cases, you may find that because of itscurrent location, the base station’s internal GPSantenna may not be able to properly receive andmaintain an active GPS signal. If the GPS signal is notdetected, as indicated by the LED, connect theincluded external GPS antenna.

Without a valid GPS signal, the base station will notfunction. Any new calls will be redirected to the nearestcell tower.

If the GPS signal is ever interrupted or insufficientbecause of location, install the external GPS antenna

and place it in an open area for better reception.

Connecting the GPS Antenna

When positioning the GPS antenna, ensure that it is:

Ⅲ Installed in a horizontal position.

Ⅲ Adjacent to a closed window and in an openarea. This ensures a clear reception of the GPSsignal.

Antenna InstallationWARNING: Use only the included Sprint-approved GPS

antenna.

Note: The GPS antenna receives signals from GlobalPositioning System satellites and uses them to obtaintime and location information.

WARNING: Do not use duct tape to secure the GPS antennato its new location.

Note: GPS signal strength can be greatly reduced in passingthrough walls or other hard surfaces.

8 Troubleshooting

Here is a brief list of the potential problems that mayarise with your device. For more information, pleasevisit us online at www.sprint.com/AIRAVE.

ⅷ My Power LED is not Illuminating.

Ⅲ Make sure that one end of the power cord isplugged in to an active outlet and that the otherend is properly connected to the power supply.

Ⅲ Make sure the power connector is securelyinserted into the rear 12 VDC port on the back ofthe base station.

ⅷ My GPS LED is not illuminating blue.

Ⅲ The GPS antenna is either unable to obtain or

having difficulty obtaining a GPS signal.

Ⅲ Move the base station to a location with fewersurrounding obstructions. The new locationshould be in a more open area and near a closedwindow, if possible.

Ⅲ If the preceding fails, remove the power cord fromthe wall outlet for at least 10 seconds.

Ⅲ Make sure the power adapter is properlyconfigured and securely connected to the rear ofthe base station.

Ⅲ Reconnect the power connector to the 12 VDC port and plug the power cord into the wall outlet. This allows the base station to re-initiate its startupsequence where it detects the Ethernet

connection, GPS signal, and communication withthe Sprint wireless network.

Ⅲ If relocation does not produce a GPS signal, uninstall the GPS antenna from the base stationand relocate it to receive a stronger signal.

ⅷ My WAN LED is red and not blue.

Ⅲ A red light indicates that the WAN port is receivingpower but has not detected a valid Ethernet

connection.

Note: The first time the base station is used after installation orafter relocation, it could take up to one hour to acquire aGPS fix. This is normal.

Troubleshooting

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/airavebysprintugpdf 13/59

Troubleshooting 9

Ⅲ Confirm that both ends of the Ethernet cable aresecurely plugged into the WAN port on the basestation and into an open port on the router. Cyclepower to the base station by removing the powerconnector and then waiting a few seconds beforereconnecting power to the base station.

ⅷ My WAN LED is blue but I can not place a call via my  AIRAVE.

Ⅲ Check that the router is communicating properlywith your ISP. The Internet activity LED on yourrouter should be blinking. For further routertroubleshooting tips, please review the routermanufacturer’s printed or online documentation.

ⅷ My System LED is solid red.

Ⅲ A red System LED indicates a system error wasdetected and is symptomatic of a communicationproblem with the Sprint network.

Ⅲ Before contacting your Sprint Customer ServiceCenter, check the following:

● Is your WAN LED illuminating blue? If it is not, then there may be a communication problembetween your base station and the router.

● Is the GPS LED illuminating blue? If it is not,the base station might not be properlyreceiving a GPS signal. Inability to receive aGPS signal can result in the base stationfailing to validate your account informationand network timing, which then prevents

usage and reroutes you back to the nearestcell tower. If this is the problem, install theexternal GPS antenna (page 5).

ⅷ  The AIRAVE base station seems to be getting too hot.

Ⅲ Make sure there is nothing blocking the heatvents located along the side of the base station.

Ⅲ It is recommended that the AIRAVE be located ina well-ventilated open area at least 12 inchesfrom any surrounding hard surfaces. It is notrecommended that the base station be installedin a cabinet or other enclosed location.

ⅷ Under what circumstances should I restrict my AIRAVE?

Ⅲ Although you can limit access to your AIRAVEby calling Sprint Customer Service at1-866-556-7310, restriction is not necessary andneeded only in the rare circumstance that other

Sprint users are taking up available capacity onyour device.

Page 14: airave_by_sprint_ug.pdf

10 Troubleshooting

Ⅲ Since in most cases you would have to be insideyour home or office to acquire the AIRAVE,restricting the device could also mean restrictingany guests or colleagues who are within yourhome or office.

Ⅲ When the base station is set to open access, thefirst three callers detected within the base station’sarea are given access to place or receive callsthrough the base station. Your base station is setto open access by default.

ⅷ Does restricting my AIRAVE provide additionalsecurity?

Ⅲ No, restricting your AIRAVE does not provideadditional security. Whether in open or restricted

mode, security is provided via standard CDMAencoding for the portion of the traffic betweenyour mobile phones and the AIRAVE, and IPSecencryption for the portion of the traffic that isrouted over your broadband Internet connection(between the AIRAVE and the Nationwide SprintNetwork).

ⅷ How can I manage access to my AIRAVE?

Ⅲ You have the option to manage priority accesssettings for your AIRAVE to specified numbers bylogging into My Sprint at www.sprint.com. Amaximum of 50 authorized Sprint cell phonescan be registered.

Ⅲ When the base station is set to open access, thefirst three callers detected within the base station’sarea are given access to place or receive callsthrough the base station. Your AIRAVE is set toopen access by default.

Ⅲ Anyone else who then initiates a call while allbase station channels are occupied is redirectedto the nearest compatible cell tower whenavailable.

Ⅲ When unauthorized callers (callers not on yourmanaged access list) within range of the basestation attempt to place a call, they areautomatically redirected to the nearest compatiblecell tower.

Note: A fourth channel is always reserved for emergency

(E911) calls to any user within range of the AIRAVE.

Maintaining Safe Use of and Accessto Your Base Station

Do Not Rely on Your Base Station for Emergency CallsYour base station operates using radio signals, which cannot

guarantee connection in all conditions. Therefore you shouldnever rely solely upon your base station for essentialcommunication (e.g., medical emergencies). Emergency callsmay not be possible on all cellular networks or when certainnetwork services or mobile phone features are in use. Check with your local service provider for details.

Using Your Base Station Near Other Electronic Devices Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from radiofrequency (RF) signals. However, RF signals from your basestation may affect inadequately shielded electronic equipment.

Conversely, do not install your base station near productswhich generate electromagnetic radiation, such as a computermonitor or microwave oven.

Consult the manufacturer of any personal medical devices, such as pacemakers and hearing aids, to determine if they areadequately shielded from external RF signals.

Restricting Children’s Access to Your Base Station Your base station is not a toy. Do not allow children to play with

it as they could hurt themselves and others, or damage thebase station.

Radio Frequency (RF) Energy

Understanding How Your Base Station Operates Your base station functions as a radio transmitter and receiver. When it’s turned on, it receives and transmits radio frequency(RF) signals. When you use your base station, the system

handling your call controls the power level. This power canrange from 1 microwatt to 50 milliwatts.

Knowing Radio Frequency Safety The design of your base station complies with updated NCRPstandards described below.

In 1991–92, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) joined in updating ANSI’s 1982 standard for safety levels withrespect to human exposure to RF signals. More than 120

scientists, engineers and physicians from universities, government health agencies and industries developed thisupdated standard after reviewing the available body ofresearch. In 1993, the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) adopted this updated standard in a regulation. In August1996, the FCC adopted hybrid standard consisting of theexisting ANSI/IEEE standard and the guidelines published bythe National Council of Radiation Protection andMeasurements (NCRP).

Manufacturer’s Warranty  2

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to makesure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of freesoftware (and charge for this service if you wish), that youreceive source code or can get it if you want it, that you canchange the software or use pieces of it in new free programs;and that you know you can do these things.

To protect your rights, we need to make restrictions that forbidanyone to deny you these rights or to ask you to surrender therights. These restrictions translate to certain responsibilities foryou if you distribute copies of the software, or if you modify it.For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or for a fee, you must give the recipients all therights that you have. You must make sure that they, too, receiveor can get the source code. And you must show them theseterms so they know their rights.

We protect your rights with two steps: (1) copyright thesoftware, and (2) offer you this license which gives you legalpermission to copy, distribute and/or modify the software. Also, for each author's protection and ours, we want to make certainthat everyone understands that there is no warranty for this freesoftware. If the software is modified by someone else andpassed on, we want its recipients to know that what they haveis not the original, so that any problems introduced by otherswill not reflect on the original authors' reputations.

Finally, any free program is threatened constantly by softwarepatents. We wish to avoid the danger that redistributors of a freeprogram will individually obtain patent licenses, in effectmaking the program proprietary. To prevent this, we have madeit clear that any patent must be licensed for everyone's free useor not licensed at all. The precise terms and conditions forcopying, distribution and modification follow.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COPYING, DISTRIBUTION AND MODIFICATION

0) This License applies to any program or other work whichcontains a notice placed by the copyright holder saying it maybe distributed under the terms of this General Public License. The “Program”, below, refers to any such program or work, anda “work based on the Program” means either the Program orany derivative work under copyright law: that is to say, a work containing the Program or a portion of it, either verbatim or with

modifications and/or translated into another language.(Hereinafter, translation is included without limitation in the term“modification”.) Each licensee is addressed as “you”. Activitiesother than copying, distribution and modification are notcovered by this License; they are outside its scope. The act ofrunning the Program is not restricted, and the output from theProgram is covered only if its contents constitute a work basedon the Program (independent of having been made by runningthe Program). Whether that is true depends on what theProgram does.

1) Y d di t ib t b ti i f th t ( l i th t id t ) d

Page 34: airave_by_sprint_ug.pdf

30 Manufacturer’s Warranty

1) You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of theProgram’s source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish oneach copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer ofwarranty; keep intact all the notices that refer to this Licenseand to the absence of any warranty; and give any otherrecipients of the Program a copy of this License along with the

Program. You may charge a fee for the physical act oftransferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warrantyprotection in exchange for a fee.

2) You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or anyportion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, andcopy and distribute such modifications or work under the termsof Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of theseconditions:

a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent

notices stating that you changed the files and the date ofany change.

b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the  Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole atno charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.

c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way,to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no

warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, yourwork based on the Program is not required to print an announcement.)

These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. Ifidentifiable sections of that work are not derived from theProgram, and can be reasonably considered independent andseparate works in themselves, then this License, and its terms,do not apply to those sections when you distribute them asseparate works. But when you distribute the same sections aspart of a whole which is a work based on the Program, thedistribution of the whole must be on the terms of this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the entire

whole, and thus to each and every part regardless of who wroteit. Thus, it is not the intent of this section to claim rights orcontest your rights to work written entirely by you; rather, theintent is to exercise the right to control the distribution ofderivative or collective works based on the Program. Inaddition, mere aggregation of another work not based on theProgram with the Program (or with a work based on theProgram) on a volume of a storage or distribution mediumdoes not bring the other work under the scope of this License.

3) You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based the source code distributed need not include anything that is

Page 35: airave_by_sprint_ug.pdf

Manufacturer’s Warranty  3

3) You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work basedon it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form underthe terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also doone of the following:

a) Accompany it with the complete correspondingmachine-readable source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium  customarily used for software interchange; or,

b) Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party, for a charge no more thanyour cost of physically performing source distribution, a  complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be distributed under the terms ofSections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily usedfor software interchange; or,

c) Accompany it with the information you received as tothe offer to distribute corresponding source code.(This alternative is allowed only for noncommercial distribution and only if you received the program in object code or executable form with such an offer, in accordwith Subsection b above.)

The source code for a work means the preferred form of thework for making modifications to it. For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for allmodules it contains, plus any associated interface definitionfiles, plus the scripts used to control compilation andinstallation of the executable. However, as a special exception,

the source code distributed need not include anything that isnormally distributed (in either source or binary form) with themajor components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of theoperating system on which the executable runs, unless thatcomponent itself accompanies the executable. If distribution ofexecutable or object code is made by offering access to copyfrom a designated place, then offering equivalent access to

copy the source code from the same place counts asdistribution of the source code, even though third parties arenot compelled to copy the source along with the object code.

4) You may not copy, modify, sublicense, or distribute theProgram except as expressly provided under this License. Anyattempt otherwise to copy, modify, sublicense or distribute theProgram is void, and will automatically terminate your rightsunder this License. However, parties who have received copies,or rights, from you under this License will not have their

licenses terminated so long as such parties remain in fullcompliance.

5) You are not required to accept this License, since you havenot signed it. However, nothing else grants you permission tomodify or distribute the Program or its derivative works. Theseactions are prohibited by law if you do not accept this License. Therefore, by modifying or distributing the Program (or anywork based on the Program), you indicate your acceptance ofthis License to do so, and all its terms and conditions for

copying, distributing or modifying the Program or works basedon it.

6) Each time you redistribute the Program (or any work based public license practices Many people have made generous

6) Each time you redistribute the Program (or any work basedon the Program), the recipient automatically receives a licensefrom the original licensor to copy, distribute or modify theProgram subject to these terms and conditions. How to Apply These Terms to Your New Programs

If you develop a new program, and you want it to be of thegreatest possible use to the public, the best way to achieve thisis to make it free software which everyone can redistribute andchange under these terms. To do so, attach the followingnotices to the program. It is safest to attach them to the start ofeach source file to most effectively convey the exclusion of

warranty; and each file should have at least the “copyright” lineand a pointer to where the full notice is found.

This General Public License does not permit incorporating yourprogram into proprietary programs. If your program is asubroutine library, you may consider it more useful to permit

linking proprietary applications with the library. If this is whatyou want to do, use the GNU Lesser General Public Licenseinstead of this License.

GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2.1, February 1999 Copyright (C) 1991, 1999 FreeSoftware Foundation, Inc. 51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston,MA 02110-1301 USA Everyone is permitted to copy anddistribute verbatim copies of this license document, butchanging it is not allowed. [This is the first released version of the Lesser GPL. It alsocounts as the successor of the GNU Library Public License, version 2, hence the version number 2.1.]

Preamble The licenses for most software are designed to take away yourfreedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU GeneralPublic Licenses are intended to guarantee your freedom toshare and change free software--to make sure the software isfree for all its users.

This license, the Lesser General Public License, applies tosome specially designated software packages-- typically

libraries--of the Free Software Foundation and other authors is no warranty for the free library. Also, if the library is modified

libraries of the Free Software Foundation and other authorswho decide to use it. You can use it too, but we suggest youfirst think carefully about whether this license or the ordinaryGeneral Public License is the better strategy to use in anyparticular case, based on the explanations below. When wespeak of free software, we are referring to freedom of use, notprice. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure

that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software(and charge for this service if you wish); that you receive sourcecode or can get it if you want it; that you can change thesoftware and use pieces of it in new free programs; and thatyou are informed that you can do these things. To protect yourrights, we need to make restrictions that forbid distributors todeny you these rights or to ask you to surrender these rights. These restrictions translate to certain responsibilities for you ifyou distribute copies of the library or if you modify it. Forexample, if you distribute copies of the library, whether gratis or

for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that we gaveyou. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get thesource code. If you link other code with the library, you mustprovide complete object files to the recipients, so that they canrelink them with the library after making changes to the libraryand recompiling it. And you must show them these terms sothey know their rights.

We protect your rights with a two-step method: (1) we copyrightthe library, and (2) we offer you this license, which gives you

legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify the library. Toprotect each distributor, we want to make it very clear that there

is no warranty for the free library. Also, if the library is modifiedby someone else and passed on, the recipients should knowthat what they have is not the original version, so that theoriginal author's reputation will not be affected by problemsthat might be introduced by others. Finally, software patentspose a constant threat to the existence of any free program. Wewish to make sure that a company cannot effectively restrict the

users of a free program by obtaining a restrictive license from apatent holder. Therefore, we insist that any patent licenseobtained for a version of the library must be consistent with thefull freedom of use specified in this license. Most GNU software, including some l ibraries, is covered by the ordinary GNUGeneral Public License. This license, the GNU Lesser GeneralPublic License, applies to certain designated libraries, and isquite different from the ordinary General Public License. Weuse this license for certain libraries in order to permit linkingthose libraries into non-free programs. When a program is

linked with a library, whether statically or using a shared library, the combination of the two is legally speaking a combinedwork, a derivative of the original library. The ordinary GeneralPublic License therefore permits such linking only if the entirecombination fits its criteria of freedom. The Lesser GeneralPublic License permits more lax criteria for linking other codewith the l ibrary.

We call this license the “Lesser” General Public Licensebecause it does Less to protect the user's freedom than the

ordinary General Public License. It also provides other freesoftware developers Less of an advantage over competing

non-free programs. These disadvantages are the reason we  TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COPYING, DISTRIBUTION

p g guse the ordinary General Public License for many libraries. However, the Lesser license provides advantages in certainspecial circumstances. For example, on rare occasions, theremay be a special need to encourage the widest possible use ofa certain library, so that it becomes a de-facto standard. Toachieve this, non-free programs must be allowed to use the

library. A more frequent case is that a free library does thesame job as widely used non-free libraries. In this case, there islittle to gain by limiting the free library to free software only, sowe use the Lesser General Public License.

In other cases, permission to use a particular library in non-freeprograms enables a greater number of people to use a largebody of free software. For example, permission to use the GNUC Library in non-free programs enables many more people touse the whole GNU operating system, as well as its variant, the

GNU/Linux operating system.Although the Lesser General Public License is Less protectiveof the users’ freedom, it does ensure that the user of a programthat is linked with the Library has the freedom and thewherewithal to run that program using a modified version of theLibrary. The precise terms and conditions for copying, distribution and modification follow. Pay close attention to thedifference between a “work based on the library” and a “work that uses the library”. The former contains code derived fromthe library, whereas the latter must be combined with the libraryin order to run.

,

 AND MODIFICATION

0) This License Agreement applies to any software library orother program which contains a notice placed by the copyrightholder or other authorized party saying it may be distributedunder the terms of this Lesser General Public License (alsocalled “this License”). Each licensee is addressed as “you”. A

“library” means a collection of software functions and/or dataprepared so as to be conveniently linked with applicationprograms (which use some of those functions and data) toform executables. The “Library”, below, refers to any suchsoftware library or work which has been distributed underthese terms. A “work based on the Library” means either theLibrary or any derivative work under copyright law: that is tosay, a work containing the Library or a portion of it, eitherverbatim or with modifications and/or translated

straightforwardly into another language. (Hereinafter, translationis included without limitation in the term “modification”.)

“Source code” for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. For a library, complete sourcecode means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scriptsused to control compilation and installation of the library.Activities other than copying, distribution and modification arenot covered by this License; they are outside its scope. The actof running a program using the Library is not restricted, andoutput from such a program is covered only if its contentsconstitute a work based on the Library (independent of the use

of the Library in a tool for writing it). Whether that is true when the facility is invoked, then you must make a good

Page 41: airave_by_sprint_ug.pdf

y g )depends on what the Library does and what the program thatuses the Library does.

1) You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Library’scomplete source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish oneach copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of

warranty; keep intact all the notices that refer to this Licenseand to the absence of any warranty; and distribute a copy ofthis License along with the Library. You may charge a fee forthe physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at youroption offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee.

2) You may modify your copy or copies of the Library or anyportion of it, thus forming a work based on the Library, andcopy and distribute such modifications or work under the termsof Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of these

conditions:a) The modified work must itself be a software library.

b) You must cause the files modified to carry prominentnotices stating that you changed the files and the date ofany change.

c) You must cause the whole of the work to be licensed atno charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.

d) If a facility in the modified Library refers to a function or

a table of data to be supplied by an application programthat uses the facility, other than as an argument passed

y y gfaith effort to ensure that, in the event an application doesnot supply such function or table, the facility still operates, and performs whatever part of its purpose remains meaningful. (For example, a function in a library tocompute square roots has a purpose that is entirelywell-defined independent of the application. Therefore, Subsection 2d requires that any application-supplied

function or table used by this function must be optional:if the application does not supply it, the square root functionmust still compute square roots.) These requirementsapply to the modified work as a whole. If identifiablesections of that work are not derived from the Library, and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in themselves, then this License, andits terms, do not apply to those sections when youdistribute them as separate works. But when you

distribute the same sections as part of a whole which isa work based on the Library, the distribution of thewhole must be on the terms of this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the entirewhole, and thus to each and every part regardless ofwho wrote it. Thus, it is not the intent of this section toclaim rights or contest your rights to work written entirelyby you; rather, the intent is to exercise the right to controlthe distribution of derivative or collective works based on

the Library. In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Library with the Library (or with awork based on the Library) on a volume of a storage or

distribution medium does not bring the other work under 5) A program that contains no derivative of any portion of the

the scope of this License.

3) You may opt to apply the terms of the ordinary GNU GeneralPublic License instead of this License to a given copy of theLibrary. To do this, you must alter all the notices that refer to thisLicense, so that they refer to the ordinary GNU General PublicLicense, version 2, instead of to this License. (If a newer version

than version 2 of the ordinary GNU General Public License hasappeared, then you can specify that version instead if youwish.) Do not make any other change in these notices. Oncethis change is made in a given copy, it is irreversible for thatcopy, so the ordinary GNU General Public License applies to allsubsequent copies and derivative works made from that copy. This option is useful when you wish to copy part of the code ofthe Library into a program that is not a library.

4) You may copy and distribute the Library (or a portion or

derivative of it, under Section 2) in object code or executableform under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided thatyou accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code, which must be distributed under theterms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarilyused for software interchange. If distribution of object code ismade by offering access to copy from a designated place, thenoffering equivalent access to copy the source code from thesame place satisfies the requirement to distribute the sourcecode, even though third parties are not compelled to copy thesource along with the object code.

Library, but is designed to work with the Library by beingcompiled or linked with it, is called a “work that uses theLibrary”. Such a work, in isolation, is not a derivative work of theLibrary, and therefore falls outside the scope of this License. However, linking a “work that uses the Library” with the Librarycreates an executable that is a derivative of the Library

(because it contains portions of the Library), rather than a “work that uses the library”. The executable is therefore covered bythis License. Section 6 states terms for distribution of suchexecutables.

When a “work that uses the Library” uses material from aheader file that is part of the Library, the object code for thework may be a derivative work of the Library even though thesource code is not. Whether this is true is especially significantif the work can be linked without the Library, or if the work is

itself a library. The threshold for this to be true is not preciselydefined by law. If such an object file uses only numericalparameters, data structure layouts and accessors, and smallmacros and small inline functions (ten lines or less in length),then the use of the object file is unrestricted, regardless ofwhether it is legally a derivative work. (Executables containingthis object code plus portions of the Library will still fall underSection 6.) Otherwise, if the work is a derivative of the Library, you may distribute the object code for the work under theterms of Section 6. Any executables containing that work also

fall under Section 6, whether or not they are linked directly withthe Library itself.

6) As an exception to the Sections above, you may also computer system, rather than copying library functions

combine or link a “work that uses the Library” with the Libraryto produce a work containing portions of the Library, anddistribute that work under terms of your choice, provided thatthe terms permit modification of the work for the customer’sown use and reverse engineering for debugging suchmodifications. You must give prominent notice with each copy

of the work that the Library is used in it and that the Library andits use are covered by this License. You must supply a copy ofthis License. If the work during execution displays copyrightnotices, you must include the copyright notice for the Libraryamong them, as well as a reference directing the user to thecopy of this License. Also, you must do one of these things:

a) Accompany the work with the complete corresponding  machine-readable source code for the Library including whatever changes were used in the work (which must

be distributed under Sections 1 and 2 above); and, ifthe work is an executable linked with the Library, withthe complete machine-readable “work that uses the Library”, as object code and/or source code, so that the user can  modify the Library and then relink to produce a modified executable containing the modified Library. (It is understood that the user who changes the contents of definitions filesin the Library will not necessarily be able to recompilethe application to use the modified definitions.)

b) Use a suitable shared library mechanism for linking withthe Library. A suitable mechanism is one that (1) uses atrun time a copy of the library already present on the user’s

into the executable, and (2) will operate properly with a modified version of the library, if the user installs one, aslong as the modified version is interface-compatible withthe version that the work was made with.

c) Accompany the work with a written offer, valid for atleast three years, to give the same user the materials specified in Subsection 6a, above, for a charge no more than the cost of performing this distribution. d) If distribution of the work is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, offer equivalent access to copy theabove specified materials from the same place. e) Verifythat the user has already received a copy of these materialsor that you have already sent this user a copy. For an executable, the required form of the “work that uses the Library” must include any data and utility programs needed for reproducing the executable from it. However, as a speciaexception, the materials to be distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or  binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executableruns, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.

It may happen that this requirement contradicts the licenserestrictions of other proprietary libraries that do not normallyaccompany the operating system. Such a contradiction meansyou cannot use both them and the Library together in anexecutable that you distribute.
