Due to a lack of reliable information about stocks, in order to ensure sufficient deliveries are made, the supply chain has to prioritise effectiveness over efficiency.

The Department is exposed to considerable risks in the supply chain if information systems fail. Legacy systems, especially those for base inventory and warehousing systems, represent a critical risk to the Department’s ability to supply its personnel.

The Department should improve and upgrade all facets of its supply chain information data systems, especially considering the significant operational risks of continuing to use decades-old IT systems.

The MoD has acknowledged information gaps and committed significant funds to an improvement programme

Information should be: captured once-only; of suitable quality; easily transferrable from one data provider to another

Make individuals responsible and accountable for data in job specifications

Use the Data Quality Assessment Toolset to determine a baseline and improvement plans
