1. ATO CAREER PLANNING TOOL (CPT) OVERVIEW

What is the

CPT?

The ATO Career Planning Tool (CPT) offers activities and resources you can use to

plan your career within the ATO. The CPT helps you to:

• Explore your career options within ATO

• Prepare for targeted positions through job‐specific development

suggestions

• Identify your strengths and areas for improvement through job‐specific

assessment and development tools

• Solicit feedback and ratings from your manager and colleagues on your

knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Build customized Career Paths and Career Plans.

When and

How to Use

the CPT

You are encouraged to create a Career Path and Career Plan regardless of where

you are in your career. Career planning is an ongoing process.

This user guide will walk you through the procedures a new user will follow to

create a personalized Career Path and Career Plan, including:

2. GETTING STARTED

Who Can Use the CPT?

Access to the CPT is based on your user type:

Others Log In as Guest Limited access and cannot save data created

How to Access the CPT as an Employee

If you are an ATO employee or contractor, or FAA non‐ATO employee or contractor, follow the steps below to access the CPT.

Note: The CPT can be accessed using desktop and laptop computers and mobile devices, such as tablets and large‐screen cell phones. The preferred browser is Google Chrome, but Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox are also supported.

STEP ACTION

1 Open an internet browser on your device and enter the following address in the address bar: https://myatocareer.faa.gov/

Click on Career Planning Tool to access the CPT site.


STEP ACTION

2 On the CPT site, click Log In in the gray menu banner to navigate to the Log In screen.

On the Log In screen, click Log In for First‐time Users or Returning Users in the middle of the page. This will take you to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) MyAccess Log In page.

3‐1 To log in using your PIV card:

A Insert your PIV card into your smart card reader and click the Agree & Continue button.

B Enter your PIN, then click OK.

3‐2 To log in using your FAA email address:

A Enter your FAA email address into the specified text field.

B Under MyAccess Sign In, enter your 8‐digit MyAccess PIN and answer

your challenge question. Click the Sign In button.


STEP ACTION

4 Once you are logged in, you will be directed back to the CPT homepage. If

you are a First‐time User or if you first logged into the CPT prior to December 1, 2018, you may be prompted to select your Service Unit.

Note: If you are unable to access the CPT after following the instructions above, click the Help Desk Information link at the bottom right of the MyAccess Log In screen.

A pop‐up screen displays Help Desk contact information including phone numbers and email address. If the Help Desk is not able to provide log in support, contact the ATO CPT Program Office at [email protected].


How to Access the CPT as a Guest User

Guest users are not able to log in but can still access the career information and build a Career Path. Guest users cannot save data created, complete the Self‐Reflection exercise, solicit rating feedback, or print. To access the CPT as a Guest user, use the following steps.

1 On the CPT site (https://myatocareer.faa.gov/ATOCPT2), click Log In in the gray menu banner to navigate to the Log In screen.

2 Click the word Guest.

3 Once you click Guest, you will be directed back to the CPT homepage and

you may proceed with using the tool.


3. COMPLETE THE SELF‐REFLECTION EXERCISE

What is the Self‐Reflection Exercise?

Before you build your Career Path, it is important that you start with the Self‐Reflection exercise. The Self‐Reflection exercise is an online, self‐guided form that helps you evaluate and reflect on the factors that influence your career decisions and affect your career development. Though the Self‐Reflection exercise is not a required step for building your Career Path using the CPT, it will encourage you to:

• Identify the factors in the workplace environment that motivate you to do well

• Identify your strongest knowledge and skill areas and reflect on how these strengths could be applied to your Career Path

• Think about knowledge and skill areas you need to develop

• Identify possible obstacles or challenges that you may face in achieving your career goals and develop strategies for overcoming these challenges.

Note: The Self‐Reflection exercise is not available for Guest users.

Why is Self‐Reflection Important?

Whether you are seeking to advance in your current career field or want to change career direction, you must consider your strengths, areas where you need to improve, and what is important to you. Once you have a clear sense of what drives you, you are more likely to identify career opportunities that fit your interests. To get the most out of the CPT, it is important to complete your Self‐Reflection exercise before creating a Career Path.

Take the Self‐Reflection exercise seriously and approach it with curiosity. Curiosity leads to deeper self‐inquiry and a higher potential for growth.


Completing the Self‐Reflection Exercise

Follow the steps below to complete the Self‐Reflection exercise.

STEP ACTION

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Yourself (the Know Yourself menu will appear). Click the Self‐Reflection link.

2 Click the Self‐Reflection menu item to expand the information.

3 Enter your responses to the questions under each section of the Self‐Reflection. You can save, edit, or print your Self‐Reflection for future use.

Section 1 Preferred Working Conditions/Activities

Reflect on your values and preferences for the type of work you want to do, the environment you want to work in, and the people you want to work with.

Section 2 Preferred Knowledge and Skills and Alignment to Career Path

Consider your strengths in terms of knowledge and skills that you currently possess.


STEP ACTION

3 Section 3 Short‐ and Long‐term Developmental Goals

Identify your short‐ and long‐term developmental goals in terms of knowledge and skills that you do not yet possess but are important as you progress on your career path.

Section 4 Contribution of Developmental Goals to Overall Career Plan

Re‐examine your developmental goals and how they will enable you to achieve your career goals.


STEP ACTION

3 Section 5 Obstacles and Challenges

Consider potential obstacles or challenges that you may face as you pursue your career and developmental goals. Identify how you will overcome these obstacles and challenges.

4 Click the Save/Print Self‐Reflection button to save a PDF version of the exercise to your computer or print a hard copy.


Using Your Self‐Reflection Results

Refer to your Self‐Reflection frequently and think about your responses. Where do they lead you? Consider discussing the results of your Self‐Reflection with your manager, mentor, or coach. Self‐Reflection is a continuous process and gaining a deeper self‐awareness is important for developing as an employee and a person.


4. EXPLORE THE CAREER PLANNING MAPS

What are Career Planning Maps?

Career Planning Maps show potential Career Path linkages among positions within any single Service Unit. Subject matter experts from each Service Unit identified these linkages that represent more common and less common transitions employees make between positions. For the larger Service Units, the more common linkages and the less common linkages are also shown in separate maps. Other career moves may be possible within the Service Units and employees often move between Service Units. Career Path linkages between positions in different Service Units do not appear in the Career Planning Maps. Those linkages appear in the Career Path Builder portion of the CPT. Each Career Planning Map shows profiled positions and non‐Profiled positions.

Profiled positions are positions with detailed descriptions in the CPT, called Position Profiles. Each Position Profile contains a description of duties, required knowledge and skills, personal characteristics that make one a good fit for the position, relevant behavioral examples of FAA Strategic Leadership Capacities, and development recommendations. You can find a complete list of profiled positions included in the CPT by selecting Position Profiles under the Resources option in the gray menu banner at the top of any CPT page. For more details on Position Profiles, see Section 5, Explore the Position Profiles.

Non‐Profiled positions are positions for which the Position Profile is under construction.

Why are Career Planning Maps Important?

When planning your career trajectory, it can be useful to know how your current position, or another position of interest to you, connects to other positions in a Service Unit. The Career Planning Maps can help you see potential options for moving from one position to another. If you are unfamiliar with careers in the ATO, you may find it useful to review the Career Planning Maps prior to completing the Self‐Reflection exercise and building a Career Path.

Explore the Career Planning Maps

Follow the steps below to explore the Career Planning Maps.

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Your Options (the Know Your Options menu will appear). Click the Career Planning Maps link.

2 Click one of the Service Unit menu items to expand the menu.

3 Click the Career Planning Map link to view the map for the selected Service Unit.

Note: For the larger Service Units, the more common linkages and less common linkages are provided in separate maps.

4 Review the map using the following legend:

Profiled positions are indicated by darker shaded cells

Non‐profiled positions are indicated by lighter shaded cells

More common Career Path linkages are indicated by solid lines

Less common Career Path linkages are indicated by dotted lines.


5. REVIEW THE POSITION PROFILES

What are Position Profiles?

A Position Profile provides a comprehensive description of a position, including job duties, knowledge and skills requirements, personal characteristics that make an individual a good fit for the job, and behavioral examples of strategic leadership capabilities demonstrated on the job. Recommendations for training, development experiences, resources, and professional networking are also included.

For a detailed explanation of the information contained in Position Profiles, see the Position Profiles sub‐section of Section 9, Career Development Resources.

Why are Position Profiles Important?

An important piece of career planning is understanding the positions that are available within the ATO. Reviewing Position Profiles prior to and during the construction of your Career Path can help you identify and better understand positions that match your interests and aspirations.

Note: Not all jobs in each Service Unit have a Position Profile – more will be added in the future. Talk to your manager or servicing HR office to find out more about jobs that are not currently profiled in the CPT.

Reviewing the Position Profiles

Follow the steps below to review the Position Profiles.

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Your Options (the Know Your Options menu will appear). Click the Position Profiles link.

2 Click one of the Service Unit names to see the list of profiled positions for that Service Unit.

3 Click the title of the Position Profile you want to view. This will open a dialogue box that includes options for opening or saving a copy of the Position Profile. Follow the prompts to open the Position Profile.

6. BUILD YOUR PERSONAL CAREER PATH

What is a Career Path?

A Career Path reflects the next one to three positions you plan for your career. You can plan your career as either a career ladder or a career lattice.

A career ladder defines career progression as a linear climb from one career level to another within a hierarchy of levels. The levels reflect roles or positions with increasing responsibility, authority, and/or access to information.

Example: You are a Certified Professional Controller who would like to move into a first‐level manager role as Operations Supervisor, and then into a second‐level manager role as an Operations Manager.

A career lattice defines career progression as a non‐linear, multidirectional, and adaptive movement across levels, positions, roles, and organizations. Career lattice designs include lateral and diagonal pathways along which individuals move, including movement across functions or departments within an organization.

Example: You are an Administrative Specialist (E‐Band) in Mission Support. You plan to move into an E‐Band Management and Program Assistant position, then to an F‐Band Management and Program Analyst position in Management Services, then to a G‐Band Staff Assistant in System Operations Services.

Why is a Career Path Important?

The Career Path Builder is a tool that enables you to create a personal Career Path that best fits your career goals and aspirations. The benefits of customizing a Career Path include, but are not limited to:

Identifying positions that match your values, interests, and preferences

Identifying knowledge and skills that are needed for desired future positions

Identifying knowledge and skill gaps in your readiness for future positions

Identifying opportunities for movement to positions outside of your current Service Unit to promote career growth

Facilitating discussions with your current and future supervisors to help you meet your career goals.


Building Your Personal Career Path

Follow the steps below to build your personal Career Path.

STEP ACTION

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Your Options (the Know Your Options menu will appear). Click the Career Path Builder link.

2 Select a starting position.

You can select a starting position for your Career Path by searching for a specific position by name or using the filters provided in the Career Path Builder. You may select any position to include as your starting position. However, know that some positions within ATO are NOT listed in the tool, and some positions in the tool do NOT have profiles. Profiled positions appear in red font. If your current position is not available, choose the position that is most like your current position. Your selected position does not need to have a Position Profile for you to include it in your Career Path.

Search Type the name of your starting position.

Note: As you enter characters into the search field, a list of matching positions will appear in the list to the right.

2 Filter Use the drop‐down menus for Service Unit, Organizational Level, Job Series, Pay Band, and Profiled Positions or Non‐Profiled Positions to create a list of positions to the right.

Note: As you apply filters, a list of matching positions will appear in the list to the right.

Select a position

Select a position from the list of positions that appear under the heading: Select a starting position from the list below… Click the Start button.

Note: Click the Reset button under the filter options to clear your choices and start a new search.

You have now taken the first step toward building your personal Career Path. You can now add the next steps you would like to take in your career.


STEP ACTION

3 Review and compare potential next step positions in your Career Path.

As you consider the next positions to add to your Career Path, you will have the option to view a position’s profile and compare its profile to other positions. The purpose of these options is to help make informed choices about what positions to include in your path. These options are outlined below.

View profiles of potential positions

Below the Career Path graphic, you will see a listing of positions that are linked to your starting position. These represent potential next career steps from your starting position. Click a position displayed below the Career Path graphic and select View Position Profile (see Section 5, Review the Position Profiles) from the pop‐up menu. Select the position that you want to move to from your starting position. You can come back to this screen and view profiles for other positions of interest to you.

Reminder: You might find it useful to reference your Self‐Reflection exercise results as you build a Career Path (see Section 3, Complete the Self‐Reflection Exercise).

Note: Profiled positions are outlined in red.


STEP ACTION

3 Review

the profile for the potential position

Click the section titles within the Position Profile to expand the sections and review information about the position. Click Close in the upper right corner of the Position Profile to close it.

In addition to reviewing the profile you can also take the following actions on this page:

Add Position to Career Builder: If the position matches your interests and career goals, click the Add Position to Career Builder button. This will take you back to the Career Builder screen and you will see the position in your Career Path.

Compare Position Profiles: In the event you are interested in comparing multiple positions side by side to help inform your next career step, click the Compare Position button. This will take you back to the Career Builder screen where you can follow the procedure outlined in the next step in this guide.

Download a PDF of the Position Profile: Clicking Download will save a version to your computer.

3 Compare two positions

Click a position displayed below the Career Path graphic and select Add to Comparison from the pop‐up menu.

Note: Only profiled positions can be compared. Profiled positions are outlined in red.

Once you have selected the two positions you would like to compare, click the Compare button. The Position Profiles will be displayed side‐by‐side.


STEP ACTION

3 Review side‐by‐side profiles

Click the section titles within the Position Profiles to expand the sections and review the information contained within them. Click Close in the upper right corner of the comparison to close it.

Clear the compared positions

On the Career Builder screen, click the Clear button to clear the positions from the comparison.

4 Add the next position to your Career Path.

Upon reviewing and/or comparing profiles of positions you believe would represent a good next step from your starting position, you can add a position to your Career Path.

Select a position to add

Click a position displayed below the Career Path graphic and select Add to Career Path from the pop‐up menu.

Note: You may add any of the listed positions to your Career Path. Once you add a position, the list of positions at the bottom of the graphic will update to reflect possible positions for your next career step. If no positions appear, it means that no paths were identified for that position in the CPT. If this happens, please discuss potential options with your supervisor or manager.

Remove a position

In the event you want to undo a position you added, click a position displayed in your Career Path and select Remove Position from the pop‐up menu.

5 Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to review and add more positions and complete your Career Path. Your Career Path can include up to four positions.

6 Click the Save button located directly above the Career Path on the left to save your personalized Career Path.


7. COMPLETE THE SELF‐ASSESSMENT AND REQUEST FEEDBACK

What is the Self‐Assessment?

The Self‐Assessment measures your readiness for a position that you have included in your Career Path. You should complete a Self‐Assessment for each position or step that occurs after the starting position in your Career Path.

First, you will rate your current knowledge and skills using a three‐point scale:

Development Need: You need to strengthen this knowledge or skill to meet the demands of the target position.

Proficient: You think you have the competence needed for the target job but it could still be improved. Development in this area may not be a high priority.

Strength: Strength in this knowledge or skill may exceed standards and is not a developmental priority.

Then, you will identify developmental experiences and educational courses that will help you strengthen your knowledge and skills.

Why is the Self‐Assessment Important?

Career development involves understanding your areas of developmental need, competence, and strength as you seek out new positions. The Self‐Assessment can help you understand where you fall with respect to key knowledge and skills needed for a position, and identity developmental activities and courses for preparing you for that position. As such, it is important that your responses to the Self‐Assessment exercise are based on honest self‐evaluation.


Accessing the Self‐Assessment

There are two ways to access the Self‐Assessment:

From the Career Path Builder

From the My Dashboard page.

STEP ACTION

1 To access the Self‐Assessment from the Career Path Builder page, click the Self‐Assessment button on the right side of the screen directly above your Career Path. You can use this option if you want to access and complete the Self‐Assessment right after building your Career Path.

2 Access the Self‐Assessment from the My Dashboard page.

A On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Yourself (the Know Yourself menu will appear). Click the My Dashboard link.

2 B Click the Saved Career Paths and Data menu item.

A list of your saved Career Paths will appear.

C Select a Career Path by clicking the Starting Position in one of the displayed Career Paths.

Note: If a position does not have a Position Profile, you will not be able to complete a Self‐Assessment for that position.

A list of the steps included in the Career Path will appear.

2 D Click the step for which you want to complete a Self‐Assessment. In the example below, you would be completing the Self‐Assessment for Front‐Line Manager ‐ SSC/SOC/OCC (J).

Three buttons will appear below the step: Self‐Assessment, Invite a Rater, and View all Ratings.

E Click the Self‐Assessment button.


Completing the Self‐Assessment

Follow the steps below to complete the Self‐Assessment for a given position.

1 For each Knowledge listed on the page, select one of the three scale points (defined below) by clicking the radio button displayed beneath the scale point.

Proficient (Yellow)

Strength (Green).

You can clear your selections by clicking the Clear button at the top right of the rating scale. You can write notes and comments for yourself in the text field at the bottom of the page.

Click the Save and Continue button to proceed to the next page.

2 For each Skill listed on the page, select one of the three scale points by

clicking the radio button displayed beneath the scale point.

Strength (Green).

You can clear your selections by clicking the Clear button at the top right of the rating scale. You can write notes and comments for yourself in the text field at the bottom of the page.

3 For each Developmental Activity listed on the page, click the checkbox to the right of the activities that you believe will help you advance your knowledge and skills for the position in question. After you click a checkbox, its appearance will change from an empty box to a green box containing a check mark.

4 For each Coursework item listed on the page, select all the activities that you believe will help you advance your knowledge and skills for the position in question.

You have now completed the Self‐Assessment. The next section shows how you can view and print the self‐ratings you just made. Following that, the guide illustrates how you can invite colleagues to provide ratings of your knowledge and skills. See the Inviting a Rater to Provide Feedback sub‐section.


Viewing Your Self‐Assessment Ratings

To review and print your Self‐Assessment ratings follow the steps below:

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Yourself (the Know Yourself menu will appear). Click the My Dashboard link.

2 Click the Saved Career Paths and Data menu item.

3 Select a Career Path by clicking the Starting Position in one of the displayed Career Paths.


4 Click the Step for which you want to access your Self‐Assessment ratings.

5 Click the View All Ratings button.

The View Self‐Assessment and Ratings from Colleagues page appears. Your ratings appear in the column labeled Self Rating. If you have invited others to provide you with feedback (see the Inviting a Rater to Provide Feedback sub‐section), their ratings would appear in the columns labeled Rater 1, Rater 2, Rater 3, Rater 4, and Rater 5.

6 Click the Print Ratings button to create a printable version of these ratings.

Note: The printable version of the ratings includes color‐coding to make ratings for each scale point stand out. Red indicates a knowledge or skill where there is a development need. Yellow indicates a knowledge or skill that is proficient. Green indicates a knowledge or skill where there is a strength.


Inviting a Rater to Provide Feedback

Though the Self‐Assessment exercise can be useful for helping identify your areas of developmental need, competence, and strength, receiving ratings from your colleagues, such as a peer or supervisor, is highly recommended. The CPT offers you the option to request feedback about your skills and knowledge for the position that appears immediately after the starting position in your Career Path.

4 Click on the first step in your selected Career Path. Note that you will only be able to invite a rater to provide feedback on the first step in your Career Path (the position that appears immediately after the starting position in your Career Path). In the example below, you would be inviting a rater to provide feedback on your knowledge and skills with respect to the Front‐Line Manager – SSC/SOC/OCC (J) position.


5 Click the Invite a Rater button.

6 From the Invite a Rater page, place your cursor in the text field below Enter a personalized message to be included with the invite. Type a personal message to include in the Rater Invitation Email.

Note: The message will be included in the emails sent to all raters that you identify.

7 Enter the first and last name of a colleague or manager you want to include in the Rater Invitation Email in the First Name and Last Name text fields. Click the Search button.

Note: All raters must have an @faa.gov email address.

Verify correct spelling, middle initial, and CTR email designations for the rater. If the rater has accessed the CPT before, his or her email address will be displayed. If the rater has never accessed the CPT, his or her email will not be displayed, and you will need to manually enter his or her FAA email address in the Email Address text field.


STEP ACTION

8 Click the Add Rater button to add the individual to the list of Invited Raters. Repeat step 2 to add more raters to the Invited Raters list.

9 Review the raters in the Invited Raters list. If correct, click the Send button to send the invitation email to all raters.

Upon completion of this step, the raters you invite will be asked to complete an assessment of your knowledge and skills for the position in question. This assessment will be identical to the one you completed as part of the Self‐Assessment but will not include sections on developmental activities or coursework. These raters will NOT be able to view your Self‐Assessment ratings. As raters complete assessments, you will be able to view their ratings via the My Dashboard section of CPT as outlined below.

10 Notify each rater via email that they should expect an invitation from

[email protected] with the subject line: “Invitation to Provide Employee Feedback within the ATO Career Planning Tool”. Be sure to ask the raters to check their Junk Email folder if they do not receive the invitation in their inbox.


Viewing Ratings from Others

Follow the steps below to view ratings you requested from colleagues.

1 On the CPT homepage, hover your cursor over Know Yourself (the Know

Yourself menu will appear). Click the My Dashboard link.

4 Click the first step in the career path for which you requested ratings from others.

5 Click the View All Ratings button.

The View Self‐Assessment and Ratings from Colleagues page appears. Your ratings appear in the column labeled Self Rating. Ratings from your colleagues appear in the columns labeled Rater 1, Rater 2, Rater 3, Rater 4, and Rater 5.

6 Click the Print Ratings button to create a printable version of these ratings.


8. MANAGE YOUR CAREER PATH DATA VIA MY DASHBOARD

What is My Dashboard?

My Dashboard is a page in CPT that allows you to quickly access your completed Self‐Reflection exercise, saved Career Paths, completed Self‐Assessments and review your assessment from others.

Access My Dashboard

To access My Dashboard from the CPT main landing page, hover your cursor over Know Yourself (the Know Yourself menu will appear) then click the My Dashboard link. You can also access My Dashboard from the menu bar at the top of the screen by clicking the My Dashboard menu item.


Revisit your Self‐Reflection

Follow the steps below to revisit and update your Self‐Reflection exercise from the My Dashboard page.

1 Click the Self‐Reflection menu item to expand the menu.

2 Review and/or edit your responses to each section.

3 Click the Save/Print Self‐Reflection button to save your responses and print a PDF version of your Self‐Reflection.

Manage your Career Paths

Follow the steps below to manage your Career Paths from the My Dashboard page.

1 Click the Saved Career Paths and Data menu item to expand the menu.

2 Click the Print/Save Career Plan button to the right of your Career Path to display the Career Plan. The Career Plan combines all the information you have completed in the CPT in one place. In addition to the chosen Career Path it also includes information you may have completed in your Self‐Reflection exercise, your Self‐Assessment, feedback from other raters, and the Position Profile for each step in your Career Path.

3 Click the Print/Save button in the upper right corner to save a local copy of, and/or print the Career Plan.

4 Click the Dashboard button to return to My Dashboard.

5 Click the Delete Career Path button to permanently remove the Career Path, all associated assessments, and feedback.

A warning appears to verify that you want to delete the Career Path. If yes, click the Yes button. If no, click the No button.


Manage your Self‐Assessment(s)

Follow the steps below to manage your Self‐Assessments from the My Dashboard page.

Access Career Development Resources

To access Career Development Resources from the Career Planning Tool main landing page, hover your cursor over Know What to Do Next (the Know What to Do Next menu will appear). From here, you can access the Career Development Resources page by clicking Developmental Guidance and the FAA Individual Development Planning Guidebook by clicking Individual Development Plan (IDP) Guide.

You can also access Career Development Resources from the menu bar at the top of the screen by clicking the Resources menu item (a drop‐down menu will appear). From the drop‐down menu, you can access Position Profiles, Career Planning Maps, and the Career Development Resources page by clicking the menu item you want to access.


Position Profiles

A Position Profile contains information about a single position in the FAA. Each profile includes a position description, examples of typical job tasks, a list of personal characteristics that might make the job a good fit for you, lists of knowledge and skills needed on the job, and behavioral examples of Strategic Leadership Capabilities demonstrated on the job. For more information on Position Profiles, see Section 5, Reviewing the Position Profiles.

Position Description – Provides a short summary of the typical duties and responsibilities expected of someone working in the position. May also provide information about who the position reports to and/or interacts with.

Job Tasks – Provides a list of the typical job tasks you would perform in the position.


Job Fit Characteristics – Provides a list of personal characteristics and interests that help make someone a good fit for the job.

Knowledge – Provides a list of the knowledge required to successfully perform the job tasks and duties.

Skills – Provides a list of the technical and non‐technical skills required to successfully perform the job tasks and duties.


Strategic Leadership Capabilities – Provides a list of behavioral examples for each Strategic Leadership Capability that illustrate the types of behaviors you would be expected to demonstrate on the job and provide ideas for your development


Career Planning Maps

A Career Planning Map shows career path linkages among positions within a single FAA Service Unit. The map illustrates the typical paths ATO employees follow throughout their careers in the Service Unit. It does not indicate all possible paths. If your career interests point you toward a different path, you will find it useful to review the Position Profiles for your desired positions to learn about their qualifications. For more information about the Career Planning Maps, see Section 4, Explore the Career Planning Maps.

Career Planning Maps are structured around four organizational levels.

Senior Manager (SL)

Mid‐Level Manager (ML)

Front‐Line Manager (FL)

Individual Contributor (IC)

Each map shows Profiled positions (darker shaded boxes) and Non‐Profiled positions (lighter shaded boxes).

Profiled positions are those with a description of the job, duties, fit characteristics, knowledge, skills, Strategic Leadership Capabilities needed in the job, and development recommendations.

Non‐Profiled positions are not currently included in CPT. Non‐profiled positions can appear in valid career paths and be linked to profiled positions. Non‐Profiled positions may be profiled in the future.

Individual Development Plan (IDP) Guide

An Individual Development Plan (IDP) is an action plan that describes short‐ and long‐term goals, activities, and training that an employee intends to pursue to further his/her career development. The Individual Development Planning Guidebook provides information about the responsibilities of the employee and manager in developing the IDP.
