AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING

Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally:

Kristian R. Fuglesang

The distillate solution

Page 2: AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally: Kristian R. Fuglesang The distillate solution

EFT workshop Brussels 20th June 2007

• Ships are the most environmental friendly means of transport

Page 3: AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally: Kristian R. Fuglesang The distillate solution

EFT workshop Brussels 20th June 2007

• Ships emit:– SOx, NOx & PM (Pollutants)

– CO2 .(Greenhouse gas)

• These emissions must be reduced

• Air pollution recognises no borders

• Air pollution from ships is not only a local, national or regional issue, it is international

• Bunkers are lifted in many ports

• Ships often redirected en-route– Options on trading voyage– Cargoes sold at sea

• International solutions are needed

• Better to deal with the cause of a problem than to concentrate on the effects.

INTERTANKO proposal:

• All ships to burn only distillate fuels, with a global sulphur content cap:– Tier I - a maximum sulphur content of 1.0% and– Tier II – (for new engines) a maximum [0.5%]

sulphur content– Specification standard for distillate fuel to be

included in MARPOL Annex VI regulations

– Distillate fuels will significantly reduce air pollution

• Benefits include– Pollutants:

• automatic and significant reductions of SOx (60% to 80%) and Particulate Matter (PM) (80% to 90%)

• reductions of NOx emissions by some 15%• simpler in-engine modifications for further NOx

reductions

• Benefits include:– Greenhouse gas:

• Reduced fuel consumption leads to less CO2 emissions

Page 10: AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally: Kristian R. Fuglesang The distillate solution

EFT workshop Brussels 20th June 2007

• Benefits include:– Operation and safety

• reduction of the risks which arise from fuel change-over at sea

• Less engine failures caused by poor heavy fuel quality

• In other words:– improved ship safety

• No need for retrofitting for additional bunker storage and piping

• Benefits include:– Waste:

• Reduced engine room generated waste• Waste is “cleaner” and free of hazardous elements

contained in residual fuels• No need to treat waste created by scrubbers• Thus easier waste management and reduced

delivery to waste reception facilities

EFT workshop Brussels 20th June 2007

• Benefits include:– these benefits would apply to ALL existing

engines on a world-wide basis– a remarkable reduction of air pollutions from

ALL ships

• And, although we aim for zero pollution– Coast and sea pollution caused by bunker spills

significantly less harmful and messy

Page 13: AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally: Kristian R. Fuglesang The distillate solution

• Responsible shipowners know that they have a duty to take initiatives

Page 14: AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING Reducing Atmospheric Pollution Globally: Kristian R. Fuglesang The distillate solution

• All alternatives reducing air emissions have a cost. That is a price that we and society must pay to protect our planet

• INTERTANKO’s proposal is straightforward and very simple to implement with strong environmental benefits, but– with a higher price for fuel
