Copeland Discus® Compressorswith CoreSense™ Protection

Operational savings and less downtime forcommercial refrigeration usersREDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS

Copeland Discus® semi-hermetic compressors have been the standard in the refrigeration

industry for years, offering the most energy-efficient, reliable performance available in heavy-

duty applications. Now this compressor offering has made another major advancement with

CoreSenseTM Protection on board, a breakthrough technology for commercial refrigeration

systems. By using the Copeland Discus compressor as a sensor, CoreSense Protection monitors

and interprets system and electrical information within the compressor, shutting it down before

damage occurs. Copeland Discus with Core Sense Protection alerts technicians to the most

serious faults first so they can accurately and rapidly correct problems and prevent catastrophic

compressor failures that could suddenly generate product spoilage.

The design of air conditioning and refrigerationsystems utilizing an air-cooled condenser involvestwo main problems, high and low ambient tem-peratures. If the air-cooled condenser is properly sized, it will operate satisfactorily during extremely high ambient temperatures. However, since most units will be required to operate at ambient tem-peratures below their design dry bulb temperature during most of the year, the solution to low ambi-ent operation is more complex.

Without good head pressure control during low ambient operation, the system can experience bothrunning cycle and off-cycle problems. Two run-ning cycle problems are of prime concern:

1.

2.

The primary off-cycle problem is the possible in-ability to get the system on-line if the refrigerant has migrated to the condenser. The evaporator pressure may not build up to the cut-in point of the low pressure control and the compressor will not start even though refrigeration is required.Even if the evaporator pressure builds up to the cut-in setting, insufficient flow through the TEV will cause a low suction pressure which results in compressor cycling.

HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL

RefPlus has two methods of head pressure control tosolve these system problems… one adjustable and one non-adjustable. Each method utilizes two valvesdesigned specifically for this type of application. A drop in the condensing pressure often occurs on air-cooled systems as a result of low ambient conditions encountered during fall-winter-spring operation.

The RefPlus Head Pressure Control’s purpose is to hold back enough of the condensed liquid refrig-erant so that some of the condenser surface is ren-dered inactive. This reduction of active condensing surface results in a rise in condensing pressure and sufficient liquid line pressure for normal system op-eration. RefPlus also offers non-flood and floating head pressure systems. For non-flood and floating head pressure systems, use the adjustable flooding valves set at 70°F (21°C) condensing combined with our new liquid sub-cooling fan cycling and speed control.

ADJUSTABLE PRESSURE FLOODING VALVES

Any system using hot gas for defrost or compressor capacity control must have a normal head pressure to operate properly. In either case, failure to have sufficient head pressure will result in low suction pressure and/or iced evaporator coils.

Since the pressure differential across the thermostatic expansion valve port affects the rate of refrigerant flow, low head pres-sure generally causes insufficient refriger-ant to be fed to the evaporator.

CASINGS: Air-cooled condensing unit bases,

condenser fan section and electrical boxes are

heavy-gauge galvanized steel (G90) with plated

or stainless steel hardware. Model OCS cabinets

are painted galvanized steel, and OVS models are

heavy-gauge galvanized steel (G90) for corrosion-

free assembly. Cabinets are provided with hinged

access door with holder. OVS condenser includes side

access panels for easy coil inspection and cleaning.

CONDENSER COILS are manufactured with

seamless, deoxidized, heavy wall, and smooth

copper tubes. They are mechanically expanded in

self-spaced, full-collared aluminum corrugated plate

fins for permanent bond and maximum heat trans-

fer. Connections and bends are brazed with a high

temperature-brazing alloy. Coils are provided with

an integrated, true sub-cooling circuit. Coils are

factory leak tested at 400 psig using -40°F/-40°C

dew point dry air. Model OVS: All tube sheets are

provided with oversized holes, and coils are

supported in sliding tracks for friction-free

assembly and maximum reliability.

FAN GUARDS AND MOTOR MOUNTSare welded wire construction for full protection

from moving parts. Baked-on powder epoxy coating

provides corrosion protection.

FANS are aluminum blades riveted to a steel hub.

They are statically and dynamically balanced for

smooth and vibration-free operation. Model ICS and

OCS 008 to 017 use 16” fans and 020 to 220 use

20” fans. OVS medium uses 20” fans. OVS large

uses 30” fans.

FAN MOTORS are low speed, permanently

lubricated sealed ball bearings and inherent thermal

protection for long life and dependable service.

Model ICS, OCS, OVS medium are line voltage

single phase. Model OVS large are line voltage

three phases.

WIRING: Fan motors are wired using flexible cord,

Type SOW 90°C #16 AWG and are secured with

certified liquid-tight connectors (OVS). Compressors

and fan motors (ICS and OCS) and controls are wired

using water and oil resistant wire, Type TEW 105°C

protected by plastic or metallic conduit attached with

certified connectors.

ELECTRICAL BOXES are located on the front

(ICS and OCS) or side (OVS) of the unit for easy

access and service. They are weather protected

and are manufactured of heavy-gauge galvanized

steel and assembled with plated or stainless steel

hardware for corrosion protection.

CONTROL PANELS are complete with terminal

blocks, control transformer, control circuit fuses,

compressor and fan contactors (multi fan units),

liquid sensing fan cycling thermostats, fix high and

adjustable low pressure control, and a pump-down

switch. The wires are numbered, color-coded and

conveniently routed in wiring ducts. All terminal

blocks are identified and match the wiring diagram.

COMPRESSORS are air or suction cooled,

They are supplied with suction and discharge

valves, suction strainer, oil filter, oil pump on model

3PH and larger, solid state or line break thermal

protection, crankcase heater, mineral oil for HCFC

refrigerant and Polyol Ester oil with HFC refrigerant.

RECEIVERS (6" dia. and smaller) are UL/CSA

certified and are supplied with a fusible plug.

Receivers (6 5/8" dia. and larger) are CRN or

ASME "U" stamped and are supplied with relief
