In line with Intercol’s policy of “Growth through Diversifica-
tion” the company acquired the Technical Business of
Bahrain Technical Trading Company (BTTC) on the 15th of
November 2003.
The acquisition of the Lennox distributorship - along with
other brands- opened a new chapter in the business history
of Intercol, which resulted in the formation of ARD.
Initially the acquisition was merged with the Marine and
Technical Services Division where it began operations on
the 1st of December 2003.
Soon after, it was clear that with the growing nature of the
business, it was imperative to separate ARD from the MATS
Division and create its own division. The entire ARD team
was shifted to Warehouse 10 and the management recently
approved the renovation of the offices, which will also
include a showroom for the division.
With Lennox (USA), and in addition to the agencies once
represented by BTTC- INTERCOL entered into an agree-
ment with BLUE STAR LTD (India), thus Blue Star & Kruger
became the first milestones in the expansion process.
Representing such leading brands and by completing over
40 installations in the short span of two years, Intercol is now
one of the leading air-conditioning and refrigeration agents
in the region.
The latest installation that was completed using the Blue
Star product range was the Le Marché Hypermarket, the first
installation for chilled water based air-conditioning systems
in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Forming part of ARD is the Water Treatment Department
which represents leading brands which provide a wide range
of solutions in this field, from desalination plants in reverse
osmosis technology and sewage treatment, to portable
water treatment and special chemicals and dosing systems.
Brands represented include Advanced Watertek, Culligan
UK Ltd, Eastern Technologies USA, Euro Forbes Int’l, LTH
Electronics, Nalco UK Ltd and Palintest UK, to name a few.
The department is lead by a team of trained and qualified
engineers and backed by a professional team of technical
staff that provide after sales support services with a
tailormade maintenance workshop fitted with the latest
equipment.

In 2004, CPD’s Danone LU biscuits sales team achieved an all
time record in sales for Intercol and Danone, Bahrain. The team
achieved 100% volume growth over the previous year with
substantial growth on the existing range of products and new
product launches which surpassed and exceeded the expecta-
tions of the principal. Internationally renowned Danone LU
biscuits’ popular brands include TUC, Lu Prince, Chipsmore
among many others.
As an acknowledgement of their good work, the entire sales
team headed by Mukesh Singhal, Assistant Sales & Marketing
Manger, and Fakhruddin, Divisional Manager, were flown on an
all expenses paid trip to Malaysia for three nights, courtesy of
Danone. The team also included; Brian Pereira, Mohammad
Mubashir, Mohamed Makkam, Subbarailoo, Changanam
Ramdas, Basheer Alshuwaikh, Hassan Khalaf and Mohammed
Radhi Marhoon.
Joining the team from Bahrain, were teams from the UAE,
Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
During the trip, they visited the Danone factory to observe the
production process of Danone biscuits including Prince Double
Choco and Chipsmore, both of which are sold in Bahrain.
The Danone Regional Manger and Marketing Team also
presented a plaque commemorating their superb sales perfor-
mance to the team, on behalf of Intercol, when they visited
Bahrain.

a staggering eight first place finishes - more than any other team
this season!
With such an exemplary performance, Nokia@Intercol proved to
be the team to beat over the season despite losing out in the
end to the season’s champion Talal Al Ghaith of the Unstoppa-
bulls.
Nokia@Intercol’s overall performance was one to be proud who
came second this season to last year’s twelfth, jumping up
eleven spots on the way!
Congratulations to the whole team for the most number one
finishes of the season, for providing us with a thrilling season
challenge and their second place finish!

With the eagerness to get the best out life, Mulloth Manikkan
Menon, or Manikkan as he is known to us at Intercol, decided
to leave India and begin working in Bahrain, thirty-seven years
ago.
Apart from the financial benefits of moving to the G.C.C,
Manikkan was curious to work and experience living in a
foreign land.
Adapting to life here in Bahrain upon arrival was a pleasure for
Manikkan who said “the pace of life here was so easy, there
was and still is a good working atmosphere and the social life
here was great as well. Bahrain at the time was only half of the
population it is now.”
Commenting on his immediate impressions of Intercol
Manikkan said “I first joined Intercol as an Accounts Assistant
to the accounts office which was located on the mezzanine
floor of Ahmed Bin Hassan Bin Ebrahim Building. I worked
under the Chief Accountant, the late P.P. Menon who instilled
a strict and disciplined working atmosphere who I owe my
gratitude to. Intercol was one of the best local companies
which was run under the directorship of the late Ali
Abdulrahman Alwazzan, Mr. Sadiq Al Baharna and the late
General Manager Mr. M.G. Wrightman.”
Manikkan explained that he has enjoyed working at Intercol
right from the very beginning as his colleagues, the
management and the directors have always been
cooperative, helpful and friendly. With a healthy working
atmosphere Manikkan was able to grow in his career to
become the Chief Accountant. What this entails is the
centralized maintenance of the entire accounts and finances
of Intercol in coordination with all the different divisions,
reporting to the directors as well as preparing the end-of-year
accounts and statements.
In the early years, all of Intercol’s offices were based in
Manama, as Intercol has grown and diversified so has the
accounts department. Previously, all work was done manually
in beg ledger books, all of which have been replaced by
computers. With Intercol’s increasing growth and
diversification, the number of employees and the volume of
work in the accounts department have grown as well, with
Bahraini’s holding 50% of the positions.
Manikkan commented that through the constant growth and
diversification of the company, in addition to the company’s
corporate social responsibility programs and the wise
directorships of Mr. Abdulrahman Ali Alwazzan and Mr. Sadiq
Al Bahrarna, Intercol had been able to maintain and cement
itself as one of Bahrain’s leading local companies.

Nisanth Sasidharan of S&I recently became a certified “Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate”. The certification is designed for experienced networking professionals with beginner to intermediate knowledge of Juniper Firewall/VPN products and ScreenOS software. Standard Chartered Bank held an ‘Auction of Promises’ and a
buffet dinner in support of the bank’s ‘Seeing is Believing’ fund
raising program.
The event, held at the Bank House in Gufool during the month
of May, had a range of items on auction including, paintings,
dinners, trips and a car. Intercol also donated items for auction
including male and female baskets of perfumes from Beauty
and Fragrance and the exclusive Nokia 8800.
Intercol successfully placed a bid on the ‘grand auction item’,
the Hyundai Matrix, which is now being used by Intercol’s ad
agency, International Advertising Agency (IAA).

The weeklong Bahrain International
Garden Show (BIGS) kicked off in
style this year with a first time ever,
flower float parade. Ministries,
schools, businesses and society
groups were invited to participate in
either the large float category or the
small/private vehicle category for the
parade.
Over thirty entrants gathered at the
parade, all of whom participated in
the three hour long parade that began
at the Bahrain International Exhibition
Centre (BIEC) and ran up the King
Faisal highway, up through Muharraq and back to
the BIEC.
The streets were lined with hundreds of families
from all walks of life who were there to take in the
view of these beautifully decorated floats.
The theme of the Intercol float was "Connecting
People, Connecting the World" and sported a
hand-decorated globe with a floral ‘Nokia@Intercol’
rainbow, a floral national flag as well as specially
made nokia-flower-stickers made from the 7360,
one of the latest models from Nokia at the time, which is part of
the l'amour collection.
Nokia@Intercol's float (using a Range Rover), which was
entered in the small/private vehicle category, gathered lots of
cheers and compliments from judges and spectators alike!

Intercol DIC’s principal Northwest Analytical Inc. (NWA) from
Portland (Oregon, USA) conducted a two-day extensive training
course early in May for CristalArabia (The National Titanium
Dioxide Co.), Yanbu Al-Sinaiyah and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on
NWA Products Quality Analyst® and Quality Monitor®.
CristalArabia is in the process of implementing Quality Analyst®
and Quality Monitor with Intercol’s guidance. The training was
conducted by Mr. Louis Halvorsen, Chief Technology Officer, NWA,
and was attended by 5 delegates from CristalArabia including their
SPC Project Team Leader Mr. Ehab Abu Al-Fara’a.
CristalArabia’s interest to deploy a SPC solution emerged from a
need to reduce variances and costs in their batch production
process.

course at the Regency Intercontinental Hotel in April.
The course highlighted the need for organizations to always be
prepared to face the challenges of continuous and non-stop
changes that affect all aspects of life for a company.
Participants were introduced to strategic planning methods so as to

The MATS Division held a successful launch of CAME products (The world's leader in Automatic Gates) in mid May at the Gulf BID Exhibition.
The event was followed by a seminar at the Diplomat Radisson SAS Hotel for Bahrain’s leading consultants and contractors. The attendees were appreciative of the presentation made by principles from CAME Europe.
The presentation covered the complete range of CAME products including Automatic Barriers, Swing & Sliding Gates in addition to the Automatic Parking Systems and Automatic Bollards.

SuperStar Libra Docks in Bahrain
Evergreen Marine
The MV SuperStar Libra, a 1988 built luxury cruise vessel, owned by M/s Star Cruises Pvt. Ltd. Malaysia arrived at the Mina Salman Port on the 26th of May, as a courtesy visit en-route to Malta. The vessel has 826 crew members onboard and can carry approxi-mately 1400 passengers.
During her stay in Bahrain, the owners made arrangements for a formal gathering onboard the vessel for invited media and guests which included a tour of the vessel by the dignitaries. CEO CheeTut Chong, Mr. Steven Ang (Asst. Director, Port Operations) and Vice President Ms. Jane Siau Pho expressed their apprecia-tion to the management and staff of Intercol’s Shipping Division for organizing the event.
Dignitaries who attended the event included Captain Saleh Abdulla Al Musalam (Director General of Ports), Captain Ebrahim Hasan Salman (General Manager, Free Zone Affairs), Captain Rushdi Al Munha (Director of Cargo Operations), Mr. Hasan Al Majid (Director General of Customs), Mr. Ali Fakhro (Manager of Fire, Safety & Security), Mr. Ali Sultan (Public Relations Officer, Mina Salman Port), Mr. Ali Al Wazzan (Deputy Director of Intercol) and his wife Ms. Mai Salman.
At the end of the tour, plaques were exchanged between the President, Customs, Ports & Free Zones, H.E. Shaikh Duaij Bin Salman Al Khalifa and the captain of the vessel, Captain Carl Magnusfolke Gottberg.
Evergreen Marine Corp. commenced its Far East-Arabian Persian
Gulf (APG) service in January 1986 in the name of Uniglory
Marine Corporation, an Evergreen group carrier that has since
become part of Evergreen. Two decades on, Evergreen has
transported more than one million TEU from the Far East to the
Gulf.
Having been established in 1968, Evergreen in the 1980s was
already on its way to becoming the world class service provider it
is today. In 1986 Evergreen launched the APG service, and during
their 20-year history, Evergreen have completed 928 sailing trips
from Asia to the Middle East and has carried in excess of one
million TEUs.
A reception was held in Dubai to celebrate the successful comple-
tion of 20 years of service to the Middle East. Intercol, who have
been Evergreen’s agent in Bahrain for the past 30 years, was
represented at the function by Director, Mr. Abdul Rahman Ali
Alwazzan and his wife along with Shipping Manager, Mr. Kevin
Smith and his wife. A memento was presented to Mr. Arnold Wang
Wang, the President of Evergreen Marine Corp, Taiwan.

A free inspection campaign was organized at the MATS division
from March 20-April 5 2006 for all Volvo trucks operating in Bahrain.
The main objectives of the campaign were to improve customer
satisfaction levels, increase customer loyalty, show concern for the
wellbeing of Volvo trucks, improve service retention, generate
higher sales in the service and parts division and improve Intercol’s
image in the market.
A lot of hard work was put in by the entire MATS team in making this
campaign a success. Preparations for the campaign began in early
January 2006 which included Volvo tuck-owners database
research, planning the marketing campaign, designing of flyers and
invitations (by IAA) which were distributed to all customers by post,
at important truck assembly points, ports, customs as well as at the
Saudi causeway.
The campaign began with a small inaugural ceremony, attended by
chief guest Mr. Ericsson (Operations Manager, United Cement
Company), Mr. Christer Malmering (Area Service Manager, Volvo
Truck Corporation), Mr. Santosh Pai, Mr. Rishi, Mr. Mohd Ashraf
Shareef, staff and Volvo customers.
The trucks were inspected as per the 35-point checklist, which was
specially prepared for the campaign. Upon inspection, quotations
were issued to customers and those who decided to proceed with
repairs were offered a special discount of 25% on labor and 20% on
spare parts.
The campaign was a great success with an expectation of higher
sales in the parts division through business from fleet operators
such as BAS, Haji Hassan etc. The professional approach towards
customers impressed principles to such a degree, that they had no
hesitation in rating Intercol as one of the best Volvo distributors in
the region.

ƒØdƒa äÉæMÉ°T øe ójó÷G π«÷GSweden’s M/s Volvo Truck Corporation (VTC)
have introduced the new generation of Volvo
Trucks, which meet Euro 4 and Euro 5 with
AdBlue technology, available in Western
Europe only. Undoubtedly, these trucks are the
future of road transportation around the world.
MATS received two new generation Volvo
FH440 Tractor units with the latest D13A
electronically monitored and controlled engine and a power
output of 440HP meeting Euro 3 emission legislation.
The D13A engine develops more power and torque (load
pulling capacity) with better specific fuel consumption
compared to competition and previous Volvo engines.
Moreover, the trucks are fitted with the Volvo I-shift gearbox i.e.
automatic gearshift. The gearbox is a conventional constant
mesh, whereas a computer mounted on the gearbox, which
interacts with the engine management system, controls the
gearshift. The advantage of the I-shift gearbox is better
drivability, higher productivity, better fuel consumption and less
maintenance costs.
The combination of the D13A engine with the I-shift gearbox
makes Volvo trucks the best available trucks in today's market,
meeting all or most of road transportation needs.
