St. Martha Church
One of these dogs is not like the others…
Today Jesus says, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! . . .Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
What does fire have to do with division in the family?
When something burns, what happens? When we take a stick, and set it aflame, it becomes something different. The process of exposure, contact, and incineration transforms the stick into energy and smoke – becoming something it wasn’t before it encountered the flame.
Through contact with Jesus, sinners become saints. Through entering into life via his teachings – our minds, our values, our vision of the human person - are all transformed.
Why are Christians Pro-life? Pro-virginity, pro-marriage? Because Jesus is. Why are we against couples living together before marriage, against doctor - assisted suicide, against destroying the environment – because Jesus is.
Why get up and go to church on the Sabbath? Why care at all about the poor? Why tithe or give some of your own hard - earned income to support a religious community? Why take time away from work or mindless entertainment to meditate, to pray, to sit with your God? Because Jesus did.
And because Jesus did – we, who follow him, do the same.
Today, many will plead with Christians,” If you loved me, you’ll accept my way of life, or you’ll accept my choice.” Like Jesus, we accept each person, but we do not accept decisions and actions that he doesn’t accept. His first words in the Scriptures are “Repent!”
We are willing to look different than those around us – we are striving to look, think, love, pray, forgive, just like Jesus. When it’s hard, and family grumbles against us, society mocks us, and neighbors turn away form us, we remember Jesus predicted these things. “Blessed are you when others utter all kinds of things against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, your reward will be great in Heaven.”
In Christ,

“When a child is given to his parents, a crown is made for that child in Heaven, and woe to the parents who raise a child without consciousness of that eternal crown!” – Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Faith at Home: “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Lk 12:51) Living according to the Gospel requires conversion, turning away from the values and things of this world and turning toward virtue and the things of God. You will then live a life that is radically different from those around you.

Sponsor/Candidate Day: This Sunday afternoon our 2020 Confirmandi will be attending Noon Mass followed by a couple hours of activities and reflections with their sponsors (or parent or close relative/friend if sponsor not available). Welcome to all. We hope to bring you closer to God and each other. Back to School: Where did this summer go? There are only 2 more weeks of August left. Many prayers and blessings to our youth getting ready for grade school and college. To help our seniors to continue their faith life in college, the diocese and I have partnered with The Newman Connection, an organization that partners with parishes and colleges nationwide to help connect freshmen with the Catholic ministry on their campus so they can reach out and invite them to get involved. Most non-Catholic colleges have either a Catholic Campus Ministry or Newman Center to help students continue to practice their faith. A table in the narthex will have cards that a parent or student can fill out and place in the collection box on the same table. If the cards run out, please write the student’s name, college, and city of college on any sheet of paper or email me the information and I will submit them. Upcoming Virtus sessions: Wed 8/21: 9:00AM Wed 8/28: 6:00PM Sat 8/31: 9:30AM Register at virtus.org. All new catechists must attend a session before CCD begins on 9/8. Please contact me with any questions.
