In a changing world ...

AsAs a consequence of the crisis of 2008, the business community had to change and adapt to new circumstances. In Belgium as much as in the rest of the world, many businesses learned that flexibility and adaptability to new trends and fluctuations needed to be built into organisationalorganisational structures and systems in order to flourish. Due to the nature of the organisation, AIESEC as an association of young entrepreneurs, is used to adapting and evolving on a

constant basis.

An association of young and ambitious individuals ...

ThisThis process of evolution has again happened during the term 2009-2010. Members of AIESEC in Belgium have worked every day to renew processes and systems that were not suitable to the new trends. Our members have ensured another successful year of our CampusCampus Recruitment Program and they have successfully lead teams and have ensured 155 life changing experiences. At the same time these members have learned valuable new skills while leading the association. They have also shared knowledge throughthrough conferences at both national and local level throughout the term.

Growing and learning together ...

II would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of AIESEC in Belgium for their efforts and achievements of the term. At the same time I would like to thank all our supporters, our partners and our alumni for their continuous involvement. Finally a special and much deserved acknowledgmentacknowledgment goes to the members of the national executive board of AIESEC in Belgium who have given the best of themselves non-stop for 365 days in order to steer the organization ahead and provide its members with the best possible experience.

In the pages that follow we invite you to join us in an overview of the endeavors of the 2009-2010 term of AIESEC in Belgium.

The AIESEC Experience

The diverse opportunities AIESEC has to offer have taken the shape of the AIESEC Experience, a unique platform of learning, exchange and leadership experiences that enables young people to explore and develop their leadership

potential.

Through their involvement in AIESEC, talented young people take the first steps in shaping their values and outlook on life. AIESEC’s 62 years of experience is full of stories of Alumni who became CEOs, social entrepreneurs who eliminated poverty in their communities with innovative ideas, teachers who shared the

beauty of acceptance and cooperation among people of all backgrounds.

AIESEC has been changing lives since 1948 from the moment a group of university students came together, united by a feeling of urgency to do something that would increase intercultural understanding and provide positive leadership for the world. Today AIESEC faces this admirable vision with a practical approach that involves exchange and leadership experiences that develop awareness in future leaders of the social, private and public sectors.

AIESEC is a platform for continuous self-discovery, through running its international exchange program, learning projects, leading teams on local, national and international level. Leadership and management skills are key attributes for individuals to develop through the AIESEC experience as well as emotional intelligence and global mindset. AIESEC members go on to become

positive agents of change in society and in their fields of work.

Key AchievementsRecord in Outgoing Exchange

RealizationsInIn order to foster growth in our core business, we implemented new strategies in our Local Committees. One of them was to create exchange competition among our local entitiesto achieve exchang goals. Some criteria taken into account were the number of meetings held, the number of contracts signed, and the number of new

outgoing exchange participants.

AnotherAnother strategy was to diversify our membership among students and graduates wanting to go on international exchange. Therefore, a large summer exchange recruitment campaign was set up to excite students to use their holidays for short, intense experiences abroad, and possibilities of the exchange program were promoted to

the participants of our Job Days and Job Fairs.

Positioning Belgium in the AIESEC Global ER SummitAIESEC in Belgium had a pleasure to be the host country of this year's Global External Relations Summit. It was held in June 2010 in Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School in Ghent.

ForFor the 2 day summit, those responsibles for External Relations from different regions of the world came together to learn and debate global strategies. The objective was to improve AIESEC's approach in today's corporate environment, get a deeper understanding of AIESEC products and how our organization can be more actively contributing to the external world.

TheThe event was facilitated by Walter Heredia, AIESEC International Vice-President External Relations 0910, Julia Dereng, AIESEC Central and Eastern Europe External Relations Manager, Malgorzata Bednarek, PwC Global Coordinator and Karel De Baere, Global Information and Finance Leader and Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, as well as the External Relations team 0910 of AIESEC in Belgium.Relations team 0910 of AIESEC in Belgium.

Finance upgradingSome of the less visible, but very important achievements of the 2009-2010 term include: the implementation of a new financial model and the improvement of internal financial management and legal policies and procedures. This upgrading

was done in order to make our processes more efficient.

Capitalizing on Online & Social Media

NoNo organization can turn away from the virtual platforms that surround us, especially an organization that is aimed to youth as AIESEC. Therefore, it is vital to set in place enough mechanisms to ensure our presence and capitalization on these platforms. A lot of attention has gone to improve the current online systems. A structure for a new Campus Recruitment website has been created, created, a system has been put up for online member recruitment based on the usage of social media, a system with online registration for summer exchange has been launched and finally, the website of AIESEC in Belgium has been entirely renewed. At the same time the knowledge management of the internal communication system of AIESEC through MyAIESEC.net has been upgradedupgraded to ensure future generations can always

capitalize on the experiences of the 2009-2010 term

Developing and training our membersAsAs a youth-driven and volunteer organization our members are our driving force. One of our ways of ensuring interaction and learning for all our members is through conferences and seminars. The 2009-2010 term saw another successful conference cycle realized with continuous attention of both local and national chapters.

Internally,Internally, there has been a focus on knowledge management. Different tools and guides in all functional areas have been created for our members and leaders to ensure the local leadership has a strong basis to perform throughout the term.

The Learning Environmentthe way to live your experience

What makes a learning organisation different from other organisations is how unique and different its learning environment is. For AIESEC, the difference is our global learning environment, which is a medium through which our members are able to live and learn from the AIESEC experiences. The AIESEC learning environment has 6 elements:

Individual discovery and reflection:Through self discovery at each stage of the AIESEC experience, you are able to drive your own learning to complement your personal development.

Team experiences:ThisThis is the basis of our current organisational structure. This environment gives you the opportunity to apply what you learn and helps you gain desired experiences, skills, network and practical knowledge in an area that interests you. It creates the space for innovation and activity which makes it the hub for entrepreneurship in the organisation.

Learning circles:These are local learning communities which are formed by local, national and international AIESEC members who share a common interest in gaining knowledge, experiences or networks in a common sector or topic..

Conferences and seminars:Conferences and seminars:AIESEC holds over 470 national and international conferences every year, and they serve as a major support to organisational activity. AIESEC members are able to gain high quality information and training from alumni, partners and experienced members through this element in addition to engaging with our stakeholders within the learning environment.

Mentoring:MentorshipMentorship advances your personal awareness and further develops your potential by gaining professional or experienced advice and guidance from your mentor based on your goals and personal plans.

Virtual spaces:This is the online platform that enables us to share and explore information among the AIESEC members. In MyAIESEC.net features as wikis, forums, file sharing and blogs make it possible.

I went on a Management Internship with Evolution Markets, the world's largest environmental broker, in New Delhi, India from the end of August last year till July this year. After doing my Master Thesis at the Catholic University of Leuven on European emissions trading, I was delighted to work as a

carbon broker in this rapidly developing nation for ten months.I worked together with 15 people, of which three were also AIESEC interns, I worked together with 15 people, of which three were also AIESEC interns, coming from Colombia, Spain and the USA. My other colleagues were Indian - most of them studied or worked in Europe or the US before - and had a

National Parks…Before going on this internship, I was highly skeptical about the so-called Before going on this internship, I was highly skeptical about the so-called 'life-changing' experience, but after doing it myself, I really believe in it and recommend it to everyone. I lived together with people from every continent, was introduced to the Indian cuisine, got to know Indian society and its culture, learned a lot of things at my work and even learned some Hindi!

Leaving my routine, feeling different by doing something uncommon, discovering something bigger, something different and exceptional… These many reasons convinced me to abandon all I was doing in my everyday life and just

leave and go for adventure to a far and mysterious country: China.Doing an internship thanks to AIESEC is not just about being a tourist because you take part in something much bigger. You breathe, live and work as a native while adding your own mindset and your own culture to the benefit of a

company. You bring more than just your academic skills and knowledge. For my part, my internship in China lasted 6 weeks in the educational and marketing field. Teaching English to children For my part, my internship in China lasted 6 weeks in the educational and marketing field. Teaching English to children I also discovered other cultures than the Chinese one. We were actually four foreign teachers from AIESEC: an

English girl, a Polish girl and a Lithuanian boy. Again, the interactions between us were amazing and we became close friends.

All these elements contributed to make me spend a wonderful internship abroad. And you know what? I am going back to China in August for 6 months.

Through our exchange program, we deliver life changing experiences to young students and graduates

”Olga Ruparelia, Ukraine, intern in AB InBev.

After graduation I had a goal to experience a one-year global internship that would further evolve me and jump-start my career. While working in the global head quarters of the world’s leading brewery, I experienced the dynamics of a fast-paced global company and received a broad perspective onon the business. Working alongside senior management, and watching them in action I was given a perfect balance of learning and contributing to the company. One year full of every day challenges, unexpected changes, an international environment with a great mixture of cultures and unlimited learning opportunities taught me to execute with discipline, react quickly, analyze and be efficient; to set the bar high and constantly keep improving to be the best;best; to approach immediately upon demands and be approachable, open and ready to help others; to feel and act as an owner of the company, be a role model and “earn it every day”.

Geily Marmor, Estonia, intern in DHL SPL Belgium

I'm working for DHL SPL Belgium Controlling and Finance team. I arrived in October from Estonia with no expectations, just knowledge, and a desire to develop myself professionally. I’m having the best time of my life in Brussels! This time has been extremely intensiveintensive here and meeting people from all around the world has substantially accelerated my personal growth. I have met some of my best friends here and with every day I understand more and more about the cultures around us. At the end of it, the world seems smaller, I am moremore confident in myself and in what I can achieve. Everything is possible if I only work hard enough.

During the 2009-2010 term the system of clearing finances between the different entities that was introduced in the term before, was practically implemented, which ensures a transparent, fair and understandable system that can be used for future generations. Using a cost-based approach also ensures the strategic services provided from the national level are more transparent. At the same time a 3-year reserve strategy was implemented, ensuring the next generations will be left with sustainable financial resources.

AtAt the same time a continued effort was invested in the standardization of financial processes and internal control mechanisms. Receivables and payables tracking was standardized with positive effects for the cash-flow and the overview on the finances. In addition small improvements in other financial management processes, including the tracking of contracts and payables improved efficiency. Finally much effort was invested in renewing internal financial and other policies and a renewal of the payroll management system.

OnOn the side of expenses, the cost-cutting exercise from the past term was continued and intensified. Not only were inefficient and non-core costs cut, a standardized system was also set up to know when certain costs should be cut in order to keep the association's finances at a healthy level.

The above graph shows a profit-loss overview of the past 5 terms. In a further analysis it is shown that the CRXP programme was more profitable than estimated, notwithstanding the financial crisis which was at its peak during the programme's main sales period. At the same time the effect on the exchange program and general sponsorship was felt which yieldes less incomes from both portfolios. However thanks to expense cutting and strict policies, the level of expenses was kept to a minimum.

In the term 2009-2010 a first estimate would suggest a small profit. On an annual basis the main incomes came from the CRXP programme (71%) and the Exchange program (22%). The main expense category consisted ofof Administrative management of AIESEC in Belgium (48%)

* based upon a preliminary realization numvers until 30th of June and estimates for the

remainder of the financial year.
